Show onto foot ?!

pretty simple really, if someone is strong with their right foot, show them onto there left foot. and vice versa.

Do you use this tactic just for wingers or for every player. I think Im doing it to nearly every opposing player and may be my players are working too hard trying to implement this tactic

Will try to do this from basics, so forgive me if it's telling you stuff you already know.

'Show onto foot' is about how your players position themselves to defend against a specific opposition player.

I'm useless at art but here's a pic on what that roughly means if say a winger gets the ball and is facing your fullback.

The first red dot is the opposition player without the OI being put on him (the blue dot is roughly where your player will take position). The opposition player has a choice of which way to go and which way to pass.

The second red dot is when the opposition player has the OI set to 'show onto left foot'. Your player will try to force him to go and pass in that direction.

The third red dot is when the opposition player has the OI set to 'show onto right foot'. And again, the black arrow shows the direction your player will try to force him to move or pass towards.

'Show onto weaker foot' will generally force the opposition player to use his worst rated foot, whichever that may be and in whichever direction that is.

Imagine that the red dot is an opposition left winger and the blue dot your right fullback. Your choice is whether or not to let your fullback decide what to do depending on the circumstance, to force the left winger to go down the sidelines or to show the left winger inside and be able to run directly at goal. There's no 'always right' answer here - much depends on both the opposition player and your own players.

eg. The opposition winger may be amazing at crossing, but if your goalkeeper and defenders are amazing in the air, then having him cross all day may result in not a single chance for the opposition whereas if those lumbering giants have a pacey winger running directly at them to try and deal with, you may concede freekicks and even goals...

Think about the bigger picture and how you want to control the opposition playing and which threats your team are capable of dealing with and which they will struggle with.

eg the opposition's star player is a winger on the right. They try to pass to him all the time and when they do pass to him, he's capable of destroying your fullback for pace and skill. How about setting your instructions to limit how often the opposition can pass to him?

(again, yeah I'm useless at art :D)

Let's pretend that all the red dots are only right footed. And you have set up OIs so that they are all shown on to their left foot. The black arrows show their options for passing. The black circle around the final red dot shows how difficult it is for them to actually find a pass to the right winger if you've got players putting pressure on in the right places. The opposition are passing to their left flank and not to their right. Whether that will cause you a problem there or not, is something which you'll have to decide - it's all about balancing risks.

Hope that helps a bit with this particular OI.
