skins possible without patches installed?

Hi everyone,bit of a debate i have with my friend, he says you can install skins onto fm2011 without any patches installed,although i disagree.Can you or can you not?

If you can would be interested to see what one(s)

In pervious versions, it is possible (I did it in '08 to '10), but since all the skins I've tried on an unpatched FM'11 don't work, I have a feeling that it has now changed...
