Spiders!

I've really got to ask this question cos its been bugging me ever since I've been on this site.

Basically, I wanna know: What the **** are spiders (you know, the ones listed under "Current active users") cos they are there all the time? Do they do anything?

Sorry if that seems like a stupid question but once I start wondering about something, I have to know the answer otherwise it drives me crazy oO)
