Hello fellow managers/players!
Just sharing my FM story with my favourite team, "Sport Lisboa e Benfica".
As a Portuguese and being Benfica my favourite team since I was a child, it was my first choice to start a game in FM 2010.
SLB has a good startup team!
The team has several key players (Cardozo, Saviola, Aimar, Luisão...) that can be very important and influential, but I think that the team has a great collective strenght.
My first problem was to maintain Luisão and Aimar in the squad! Both wanted to leave to bigger clubs! So, when they became unhappy, I sold them (Luisão to Milan - 5,5 million E and Aimar to Barcelona - 12 million E), so they could continue with their lives and don't disrupt my team harmony.
To replace them, I bought Matias Lequi (not as good as Luisão, but still very useful and crucial in some matches) and Badelj (much younger than Aimar! Still unexperienced, but with a good evolution prospect) and they did their part!
Another problem was the right wing! Left wing was perfect: Di Maria and Coentrão!
Balboa doesn't have the type of characteristics I wanted, so I loaned him and bought Krivets (cheap, plays simple and can be crucial in some matches) and adapted Ramires.
Also signed Frédson for free (now Juventus wants him and he's worth something around 1,5 million), Jorge Andrade (at first, I tought he was good, but I really don't like him! Not a solid centre-back, doesn't play as good as I thought!), Hibbert (solid right back! He's a little bit temperamental and he got sent off 4-5 times in the season) and Lobodzinski (scored 7 goals in my first season, but made many assists as a right winger/inside forward).
Also signed several youngsters: Areola, Rochina (scored 9 goals in his first team matches), Gonzalo Barreto, Vered, Hélan, Haruna Lukman, Carlos Lázaro, Keko, Golasa, N'gossan... And I signed for free (end of contract thing) Biseswar, Feghouili, Rivas and Julian de Guzman. That will turn out to be a very big issue, because the players I've loaned in the previous season (Adu, Yebda, Patric, Edcarlos, Makukula, Romeu Ribeiro, Filipe Bastos, Nuno Gomes, Weldon, Marcel,... ) will return and they will want to play in 1st team!
Now... The results!
With a 4x4x2 Diamond tactic... I've won EVERYTHING!
"Liga Sagres", Cup, League Cup and Europa League (against Everton - 2-0)!
I've really turned Benfica into a winning team!
The players I loved the most: Cardozo (top goalscorer! He's a machine!), Júlio César (huge surprise! Very good goalkeeper!), Sidnei (tremendous talented youngster), David Luiz ("The Boss"), Filipe Menezes (scored a lot of goals and made several assists) and Javi Garcia (****! What a DMC!)
The players I hated the most: Andrade, Carlos Martins (mainly my fault, because I've tried to adapt him to AMC), Quim (everytime I needed him to play, I got goosebumps!), Mantorras (scored 1 goal in 15 matches... Pretty bad!) and Weldon.
Players that did their job: Di Maria, Saviola (didn't score as much as I wanted, but in the last matches, played very well), Miguel Vitor, Amorim, Maxi Pereira, Ramires, Krivets, César Peixoto, Jorge Ribeiro, Frédson, Lobodzinski, Badelj, Urreta (talented youngster) and Moreira.
If you can, make sure you play a game with SLB! You're gonna love it!
