I was just wondering how people spot players with potential?

Generally to a find the best player in a set position i look to see what attributes the player needs to play that role and then i generally get the player I need.

That is all good and dandy finding the player for the here and now but what is the best way to find a player in a set role for the future?

If I am to stay at a club for some time it is best to start looking at this approach to save me money in the long run.

If they're a young player then I will check out their determination. If it's particularly high, coupled with good attributes for key roles, then I will get a scout report on them

Nothing groundbreaking but hope this helps a little

Use the club scouts first to get a general feel (don't worry too much about * rating as that varies)

Use scouts to follow for a few matches and see how they do.

As TheBallBoy said check his determination etc too. Also his personality will affect things.

Mainly see if he stands out in any parts you need. E.g decent passing for a CM. See if he has any usefull PPMs too

Essentially, check their scout reports for Hidden attributes. That can be a deal breaker. Also, check their stats. A 5 star potential young player, with horrible base stats for his position will not improve by that much most times. Check his determination and technique. High Determination is a bonus, but not vital. Also, as said above, check PPM's.

In general, avoid players who are inconsistent (scout report). You'll never be satisfied with them in the long run most times..

For me it goes like this:

If they're young (i.e. still got potential to fill) I'll see their Determination. If it's at a good level it shows they should develop quickly and to their full potential.

Other key stats that affect all positions are Work Rate and possibly Technique, although the latter probably isn't as useful.

Next, it's about judging the players based off their positions and these stats:

Defenders - Marking, Tackling, Strength, Heading, Passing

Centre Midfielders - Passing, Shooting, Tackling - all-round good stats basically

Wingers - Crossing, Pace/Acceleration, Dribbling, Passing

Strikers - Finishing, Heading (for a target man), Composure, Pace/Acceleration, Off the Ball

Goalkeepers - this is a bit more instinctive for me, just sort of do a bit of guess work haha

Of course, scout reports are useful, but they sometimes don't tell you the whole story.

(this may not work entirely for you - like real football scouting, judging a player can be highly subjective)

I don't pay attention to PPMs unless they are bad ones. For example - shoots from long distance is a bad one to have because that player will waste possessions on low percentage longshots. Nope the BEST WAY to scout for players is a process.

1. Hire the best scouts possible, my head of scouting has scout potential and scout ability at 20.

2. Check your CURRENT roster and identify your weakenesses and your strengths.

3. When you have a STUD footballer, use the find comparable players options. Then scout all the players that this process finds. If you have an promising footballer you think will do well, do the same. Now, find all the 3.5 star potential and up footballers that your scout has identified.

4. Find out how much they cost and if they fit your budget. You can 'make enquiry' to the player's club or just make an offer at the base value, and see what response you get in return.

5. Now when choosing between prospects. Bring up their scouting report, then bring up the second player's scouting report. Then do 'compare player' and bring up the previous player for a side by side comparison. Now you can see the stats and if this player will be better or worse than the other player.

6. Also account for age, if the player is a couple years younger, ex. 21 instead of 23, he has more room to grow. So a couple points difference here and there is no big deal for a youngster. 3-5 points is a huge deal though!

7. Further fine-tune your comparison, by comparing stats according to the role you want the player to play. For example, Midfielder-> Attacking Midfielder. Then you can see what attributes are relevant for the role. Or another example, Defender-> Central Defender. Etc.

8.What I like to do is compare prospects to my established stars on my club and see if that player has the potential to be as good or even better. For example, I needed to replace Lucas Leiva a few years down the road, I found all comparable players, then I scouted them all. Then I read the reports of those players with potential 3.5 stars and up. I ended up buying Lucas Romero.
Good luck!
