AC Milan - Let’s Play - Stan the Man takes Charge

Summary:

Welcome to my Let’s Play of AC Milan – the sleeping giants of European football! I remember the good old days when Channel 4 would put on an Italian Serie A game on a Sunday afternoon for us all to enjoy after we had overdone it on the Sunday roast. Strange player names, flares in the crowd and incredibly enthusiastic commentary made it all seem a bit magical. Milan were always my favourite team to watch with players like Paulo Maldini, Oliver Bierhoff and (my personal favourite) Gennaro Gattuso. However, a lot has changed since those heady days of Italian football.

Despite having won the UEFA Champions League (UCL) an incredible 7 times, the team has found itself on the fringes of the European party in recent years, unable to compete with the vast sums of money found elsewhere in Europe. The team has also struggled domestically recently, last winning the league in the 2010-11 season and only managed a 6th place finish in Serie A last season. In the 2016-17 season, Milan finished well behind perennial Scudetto winners Juventus, Roma, Napoli, Atlanta and Lazio. Milan will need to find a way to get past all of these teams as well as inter city rivals Inter Milan, the enigmatic Fiorentina and the occasionally brilliant Udinese.

However, things are looking up! The team has recently being bought by Chinese investors who are willing to put their money where their mouth is and invest in the team. The 6th placed finish last season means Milan will be competing in the Europa League (EL) this season, so can win a European trophy.

Philosophy

My aim is, ultimately, to return the team to the top table of European football by winning the UCL. However, we need to walk before we can run and will start with trying to win the EL and Serie A back from that pesky lot over in Turin. Although Milan still has an excellent reputation in football, some players may want to leave for UCL football. I won’t be forcing any players to stay against their will, but will be driving a hard bargain to reinvest in my playing squad. I am keen to develop own players through our Youth Academy and will also sign young players to develop. Milan has always had a reputation for signing a high number of foreign players such as Hernan Crespo, Cafu and Rui Costa. In particular, Milan have always had a high number of Dutch players in their team (Gullit, Van Basten, Seedorf, De Jong to name a few). Some of my favourite memories from Italian football involve Paul Gascoigne, affectionately known as ‘Gazza’, so if I can find an English playmaker, I may try to sign him for the nostalgia factor.

Objectives
  1. Qualify for the UCL regularly
  2. Win Serie A
  3. Win the UCL
I aim to update this thread regularly and keep it going for at least 5 seasons – who knows where we will be by that time? Hopefully not sacked or relegated, that’s for sure. So sit back, buckle up and enjoy the story of Stan 'The Man' Lindsay’s attempt to revive AC Milan.

Goalkeepers

View attachment 60287

Gianluigi Donnarumma
Antonio Donnarumma
Marco Storari

Gianluigi Donnarumma is 18 and nailed on to be my starting goalkeeper for the next 20 odd years. His brother, Antonio, will be sufficient back up for now. Storari is odd and hopeless – he better start packing. So overall, a very good start.

Defenders – Full backs

View attachment 60286

Right sided
Ignazio Abate
Andrea Conti
Davide Calabria

Left sided
Luca Antonelli
Ricardo Rodriguez

Abate is a leader in the team and a quality player, however, he is out for 7-8 months with cruciate ligament damage. This is a major blow, but softened by the fact that Conti is a solid enough replacement with many of the same strengths as Abate. Calabria has some potential, we’ll see how he goes. Antonelli is old and slow. He will need to be moved on if a suitable replacement can be found but not urgently. Rodriguez is a player I love! Although not particularly quick, he can cross, takes quality free kicks as well as being good at the defensive side of the game as well. He will play a lot this season and, at 24 years of age, will be sticking around for some time.

Defenders – Centre

View attachment 60285

Leonardo Bonucci
Cristian Zapata
Mateo Musacchio
Alessio Romagnoli
Jheron Vergara
Gustavo Gomez

A bit of a mixed bag here, really. One the one hand Bonucci is probably the best centre half in the world at the moment and had good cover with Musacchio and Romagnoli. However, the rest aren’t up to it and will likely be moved on. Because of the quality I do have, I may well play 3 at centre backs. Italians love defending anyway, right?

Central Midfielders
View attachment 60284

Lucas Biglia
Riccardo Montolivo
Franck Kessie
Juan Mauri
Jose Mauri
Manuel Locatelli

Two more brothers here, in Jose and Juan Mauri. I hope they like sticking together, because I will definitely be selling both of them. Biglia is a tough tackling midfielder with bags of experience as is Montolivo. Locatelli is an exciting young prospect at only 19 years of age. Franck Kessie is on loan here, but joining permanently at the end of the season. He is strong and quick, but I’m not entirely sure where he fits in just yet. We probably need a bit more depth here.

Attacking Midfielders

View attachment 60283

Left Sided
Giacomo Bonaventura
Fabio Borini

Centre
Hakan Calhanoglu

Right Sided
Nnamdi Oduamadi
Suso

Bonaventura is a key player for us and is equally as good playing in central midfield. Calhanoglu is a creative guy who can score from anywhere so I will be looking for him to contribute early and often with goals and assists. Suso is another guy who can win a game from nowhere. Fabio Borini has somehow gone from relegation dogfights in England with Swansea and Sunderland to 80,000 fans a week and Europa League football at one of the biggest teams in the world! There is a god and I assume he’s Italian. I really don’t rate him, but will be fair, give him a chance and see how he plays. Hopefully he can prove me wrong. In conclusion, there is some quality here, but not a lot of depth.

Strikers
View attachment 60282

Nikola Kalinic
Patrick Cutrone
Andre Silva

This isn’t great. Kalinic is 29 and joining permanently when his loan ends. I don’t want him! He could be used as a target man I suppose, but I’m not a fan. On the bright side, Patrick Cutrone and Andre Silva are both young, talented strikers with potential to improve. I’m happy with them.

Summary

Overall, a reasonable team which should be able to contend for UCL football in Year One. We have lots of experience which is good, but also means a lot of players who will need moved on soon. There is also a lot of rubbish players, who need shipped out ASAP. I think, if we get a couple of good draws, we can contend for the EL. We have a small number of young players who I will look to develop for the future. We will look to sign a centre midfielder, a winger and maybe a full back, if we can.

Formal Introductions

The board meeting was about as exciting as I imagine a board meeting can be. I am very much a tracksuit manager so I imagine I would have spent most of the meeting tugging uncomfortably at my own collar and complaining about how suit shorts aren’t a thing. The board had no other obligations for me other than to win stuff - Great! I asked that I also be judged on signing a high number of young players to play in the first team as I mentioned this would be one of my philosophies. I then took the time to tell all of the support staff exactly how to do their jobs for the foreseeable future and bounced on into my first press conference. I told the press how much I loved our current Chairman (Li Yonghong). He has access to all the money! Of course I love him! I also said everyone would get a chance to prove they were worthy of being here and that we wouldn’t be prioritising the league over everything. I tactfully dropped a quick line about needing to sign a midfielder.

Friendlies

Yawn. Games were played. The team is now match fit. 3 wins and a draw against bang average European opposition and our own U-20’s doesn’t prove anything. Andre Silva decided to scare us all and get himself injured in training, leaving us with only 2 fit strikers for both legs of our EL qualifying campaign. He will be back in time for the next set of games, and that’s all that matters. You don’t win any trophies in July.

Staff Changes

Orlando Trustfull

I opted to mutually terminate the contract of the current Assistant Manager Luigi Riccio. He wasn’t bad, but I needed somebody I can trust to do a good job as I give my assistant a lot of responsibility. I replaced him with Dutchman Orlanda Trustfull. The 46 year old has lots of experience having begun his career at the youth teams in Ajax, before moving on to follow Frank De Boer around in his managerial career as an assistant. Yes, this does mean he’s been assistant at Inter Milan before, but that just means he already has good knowledge of the league. We’ll just keep that part of his career quiet.

Board Expectations
The board only expects us to qualify for the EL through the league and reach the final of the current EL competition. However, for an extra 7m transfer funds, I upped the league expectation to qualifying for the UCL. The board couldn’t give a monkeys about the Italian Cup, so I will probably use that to rest players and blood a few youngsters, especially against lower league opponents.

The UCL draw

Best Placed 3rd Qualifying Stage

AC Milan v NK Donzale (Slovenia)

I have absolutely no idea who this lot are. They sneaked into this by winning their previous games 3-3 on away goals against another team I had also never heard of.

Tactics

Having looked at the players we have, I have decided to go with the ever popular 4-2-3-1 formation – for our first few games of the season anyway. Milan have traditionally played a 4-1-2-1-2 formation, but I had to find a way of getting Suso into the starting line up. Also, looking at the complete lack of options up front, I’m very happy to only play one of them at a time up there. On the other hand, we have quite a few good centre backs, so I will probably play a 5-3-2 formation if Suso gets injured or we need to just keep the ball for a bit.

Team Sheet

I’ve gone for Abate over Calabria for experience at right back. Abate will captain the team for game 1, but I’ve not completely decided on who my captains will be. I also decided Romagnoli’s speed would be needed at the back, so picked him over Musacchio. The rest of the teams picks itself going forwards. Kalinic needs to play well if he has any hope of starting when Silva gets back from injury in a few weeks.

Best Placed 3rd Qualifying Stage – Leg 1

AC Milan 3 v 1 NK Domzale (Slovenia)
Scorers: Kalinic, Borini, Locatelli

Start As You Mean To Go On

This could have been a very different story if the Slovenians had converted the penalty they were awarded in the 17th minute after Romagnoli brought down their striker. Fortunately, Donnarumma saved it. Suso assisted all 3 goals for us before they , rather infuriatingly, got a late away goal. The tie is not over yet.

Best Placed 3rd Qualifying Stage – Leg 2

NK Domzale 1 – 2 AC Milan (Milan win 5-2 on aggregate)
Scorers: Kalinic (2)

Domzale Dominated Over 2 Legs

I put Calabria in for Abate and Locatelli in for Montolivo due to his impressive performance off the bench last time out. Locatelli didn’t let me down with 2 assists in this game. Infuriatingly. Romagnoli gave away another penalty which Domzale scored this time. He better not make a habit of this. Bonucci would probably kill him for me.

UCL Best Placed Play Off Draw

AC Milan v Sheriff Tiraspol (Moldova)

Another decent draw for us. I would rather play the second leg at home, but I can’t see us having too many problems here.

Good luck.

In my Newcastle save that I had/have Kessie was one of the best CMs there was 6 years into the game.

Do you not have another keeper in the youths who is almost as good as Donnarumma? Cant remember his name

And So The Italian League Adventure Begins

Injury News

Absolute disaster! Gianluigi Donnarumma (the good Donnarumma) is out for 2-4 months with a hip injury. Given the importance of the upcoming fixtures, this could not have happened at a worse time. To add insult to injury, Antonio Donnarumma (the inferior Donnarumma) is also out for a couple of weeks. So it looks like our EL future is in the hands, all to literally, of a 40 year old bloke named Marco Storari who I hadn’t planned on allowing to see daylight, never mind any playing time this season. Delightful!

Best Placed Play Off – Leg 1

AC Milan 4-0 Sheriff
Borini, Suso (3)

Suso Easy!

I allowed Locatelli to continue in midfield from the off due to his recent good performances again. We had a slow enough start and were only 1-0 up at half time, but kicked on with a glorious Suso hat trick in the second half. This included a ridiculous free kick from miles out. Other good things from this game – a clean sheet for Storari, who probably only touched the ball a handful of times and Romagnoli managed not to give a penalty away – Hurrah!

AC Milan 0-2 Juventus (League Fixture 1)

Self-Destruct Button Activated!

Bonucci returned to captained AC Milan against his former club. Lucas Biglia will be vice captain when he is (finally) fit again. Juventus came in to this game in good form having beaten Lazio 3-0 last weekend to win the Italian Super Cup. The only good news is that they were missing Dybala through injury.

We were actually quite unlucky to go 1-0 down to a well worked Gonzalo Higuain goal on 22 mins. However, after that we went in to meltdown. 6 yellow cards. 2 red cards to Musacchio and Rodriguez – 2 players I’d chosen for their ‘experience’ in this game. Kessie also thought it would be fun to give away a stupid penalty which Higuain also converted. So in summary, we played quite well but must have been watching too much Fight Club on the bus over to this one.

Best Placed Play Off – Leg 2

Sheriff 0–1 AC Milan (Milan win 5-0 on aggregate)
Andre Silva

Silva Lining To a Rubbish Week

Antonio Donnarumma (no, not the good one) returned in goal for this one and managed a good clean sheet. A host of players were given their first starts of the season (Calabria, Antonelli, Oduamadi, Catrone, Silva and Donnarumma) as this one was over before it started. The result was a forgone conclusion but it was nice for Andre Silva to pick up his first goal for the club. Not quite so good was Catrone coming off injury – he’s done for 3-4 weeks now.

The result means we are through to the EL group stages. Job done!

Europa League Group Stage Draw

AC MIlan
Real San Sebastian (Spain)
Hoffenheim (Germany)
Oostende (Belgium)

This was a reasonable draw for us. I expect Hoffenheim to be good, but the other 2 hopefully won’t be up to much. In terms of travel it’s a very good draw. No three day donkey ride to the far side of Russia is always good.

Lazio 3-1 AC Milan (League Fixture 2)
Borini

Literally Self Inflicted Wounds Hurt

This was the game our incredible injury list finally caught up with us. We went behind after 7 minutes, but actually played well to get back into the game through a Borini goal. Then it all started to unravel. Antonelli went off with a puled groin. Calhanoglu even managed to run into Andre Silva resulting in the former sustaining a concussion and the latter sustaining a gash to the head! Steam was literally spouting from my ears at this point. Both had to come off injured and are out for a few weeks. Ridiculous day out.

Month in Review

Overall, it has been a woeful disappointing start to the league season. We have been massively caught out with how thin our squad is. This emphasised the need for me to invest in some young players and ship out the dead wood quickly to prevent this happening again. Still, this is probably our two most difficult league fixtures out of the way early. We have an easy EL group. We have made some decent signings and got rid of a lot of poor quality players who were earning a lot of money. We also don’t have too long to wait until we get a few of our injured players back.

Star Performer

Suso (AMR) – Is this really the same bloke who couldn’t get a kick at Liverpool? Quality player vindicating why I am literally playing a formation entirely so he can get on the field.

Concerning Performer

Hakan Calhanoglu (AMC) – He hasn’t really done much to justify his place in the team. The problem is, no one else can play in his position, so he simply has to do better.

Injury Update

Players – Time Until Return
Andrea Conti – 5-6 months
Luca Antonelli 3-5 weeks
Gianluigi Donarumma – 2-5 weeks
Hakan Calhanoglu – 9-11 days
Giacomo Bonaventura – 8 days – 2 weeks
Patrick Catrone – 8 days – 3 weeks
Andre Silva – 1-3 days
Lucas Biglia - 1 day

Transfers

Transfer Budget: £25m
Wage Budget: £117k

Strategy:
I aim to keep up Milan’s proud history of signing a good number of Dutch players as well as Italian to keep the club true to it’s roots. This is something Milan haven’t done well for a quite a few years. I also aim to meet my philosophy of signing a good number of young players for the future.

Players Out:

Cristian Zapata – £5.5m – AS Roma
Gustavo Gomez – £3m – Hertha Berlin
Jose Mauri - £825k – Bologna

Zapata needed to move on as he was 30 and not good enough to start. I was a bit disappointed to lose him to a rival like Roma, but he isn’t that good and I got decent money. The other 2 simply weren’t good enough and were on considerable wages which they weren’t justifying.

Players In:

Justin Kluivert (AML)– £5.25m – AFC Ajax (loaned back until the end of the season)

The name alone is reason enough to sign this guy! Just like his infamous father Patrick, Justin will be playing for Milan – just not right now. I felt it was better to get this deal done now as he will inevitably dramatically increase in price by next year. Loaning him back to Ajax also means he will develop nicely and play every week. He will definitely make an impact next season.

Matthijs De Ligt (CB) - £12.5m – AFC Ajax

Another Dutch signing who will address our need for youth at centre back. At 17, he will have lots of time to develop – he already even has 2 caps! One for the future who will play here and there when needed. I’m looking forward to seeing exactly how good this guy can get.

Fred (CM)– £17m – Shakhtar Donestsk

Fred comes into the squad at a good time due to our endless list of injured midfielders. He’s strong, quick and has an eye for goal. That will do for me. O and he’s Brazilian – what’s not to like? Hopefully he can be a difference maker for us.

Devid Bouah (DR) - £1.2m– AS Roma

An Italian right back who isn’t actually old enough to sign a professional contract yet. He will do in time, but for now, he’s a good signing for the future and prevents Roma from having him as well.

Mateo Politano (AML) - £10.5m– Sassuolo

Politano addresses a major need in that we don’t have enough good quality wide players. I had went for him at the start of the window, but got rejected. He kicked off enough of a fuss to get himself transfer listed, so at that point, I went back in and got him on the cheap. Excellent. He is young (24) and Italian with a point to prove. Will challenge Borini for playing time.

Good luck.

There is another keeper, but he is currently out on loan. If only I had him now!!!
