I'm just wondering if how many of you guys look at a players attributes and buy them based on them rather than a combination of stats and position.

For example, Markus Henriksen is a Deep Lying Playmaker in his best role, but I think he'd make a good False 9, and his attributes (highlighted) seem to suggest that too. Giving that he's only 20, he can be retrained.

How many of you ignore positions and look at what the player is good at and slot him into your team in the position you think he's best for?

How important do you think the star rating system is when a player is scouted?

That's a good question i was really curious about too ..
From my personal experience i can confirm it worked:
I bought Iancu that was( and still is) reported as Att. midfielder in playmaker role.
Though i started using (and retraining of course) him as IF in AMR position in my tactic...
and trust me he won European best player from first year (excactly cause me playing him in a different position i thought he would be more useful).
He even was my best player in my Dortmund side lifting CL from first season!
As a conclusion i can confirm that this move can be successful but this happened to my save for that specific player (might be coincident or not really not sure ).
All we need is share our different experiences into this matter and confirm it or deny it at the end heh!

One of my favourite and most consistent players was a DM I retrained to a winger on FM12 with Luton, playing most games for almost 20 seasons!

Yes. I do, and I've managed to do it with great success.

For instance; I trained Phil Jones into becoming the best halfback in the game. Early in the game there aren't that many youngsters in the DM position that has the potential to become truly world class. Phil is one of the few, unfortunately a lot of people miss out when they decide to let him become a defender.

on FM13 i signed a CM who looked awful for a CM. He had a strikers stats though, so i retrained him as a striker. in 5 seasons he scored 35goals + every season.

Works best with players who have already great ability along with solid adaptability, otherwise you can often have them train to the new position really slowly and perform badly whilst doing so further slowing their development.

I've done it before but it's more often than not either been a AMC/ST into an inside forward or a DM into a FB or the other way around.

Phil Jones becomes a monster RB, even surpassing Rafael on my United save.
Also, Kyriakos Papadopoulous, retrained him as a BWM CM, and he's tearing the league apart..
Oh and, Shinji Kagawa for AML winger. He got around 6 MotM in that position, while closely contending for many more, and his value rocketed upto 64 Million.

Tom Rogic at Celtic. Originally a AMC but trained him as a False 9 and was banging the goals in

Some positive responses. Will give this a try with some players. Cheers
