I'm up to April 2021 in my Southampton save, and I'm on the verge of my second (not consecutive) Premier League title; about to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final; I have won the last three Capital One Cups and three of the last six FA Cups, plus the Europa League two seasons ago.
My wingers usually get into double figures for both goals and assists, but my strikers are consistently my top scorers. My team's game is based around getting crosses into the area for my Shadow Striker and Deep-Lying Forward. They also link up well together through the middle with one-twos and play the wingers into the channels. This current season, I have added a world class Trequartista for whom I make tactical accommodations and he has weighed in with plenty of goals and assists as a result.
Stats for the last three seasons, all competitions...
2018/19 - Won: Premier League, Europa League, Capital One Cup
Jay Rodriguez - Shadow Striker: 33 apps (5 as sub); 24 goals
Christoffer Jorgensen - Deep-Lying Forward: 25 apps (13); 21 goals
Erik Gomez - Deep-Lying Forward: 26 apps (10); 17 goals
2019/20 - Won: FA Cup, Capital One Cup; 2nd: Premier League; Semi-final: Champions League
Jay Rodriguez - Shadow Striker: 39 apps (3); 32 goals
Erik Gomez - Deep-Lying Forward: 45 apps (11); 32 goals
Christoffer Jorgensen - Deep-Lying Forward: 20 apps (8); 9 goals - injured for 4 months
2020/21 - Currently: Top of Prem by 6 points with 5 matches to go and one game in-hand; Won Capital One; Lost semi-final of FA Cup to Chelsea; Semi-final of Champs Leg vs Bayern Munich is my next match
Jay Rodriguez - Shadow Striker: 31 apps (5); 23 goals
Christoffer Jorgensen - Deep-Lying Forward: 26 apps (8); 20 goals
Erik Gomez - Deep-Lying Forward: 30 apps ( 6 ); 15 goals
The wingers get plenty, too. It's possible that with just three more goals, I will have 7 players in double figures for the season.
I have already posted a thread explaining my preferred 4-4-1-1 tactic, for which I have posted the link at the bottom of this message. I called it "The REAL 4-4-2", but I could just as well have called it "The REAL 4-2-3-1" - because in my formation, the wingers get up and attack but they also track back and engage in build-up play from deep in their own half and help their full-back when necessary. Jose would be proud of us!
The Shadow Striker, in the No.10 position, is the key goal threat. I've explained his role in detail in that thread, including screenshots of chosen goals to show how he implements my instructions on the pitch.
But it's also worth saying that I finished 6th, 3rd, 6th, 6th and 8th before I eventually won the League and only picked up my first FA Cup in 2016. I was patient and got to grips with the game over time, by understanding what worked with my squad and what didn't, and learning what qualities I needed to bring in when signing new players.
