Stupid Question re Steam?

Apologise in advance as for those who know this is probably a stupid question, but I'm asking it anyway. I normally buy the game for the PC but see that lot of people use Steam.my stupid questions is can you only play via Steam if you are connected to the internet?, or can you still play stand alone on your PC.what's peoples experience of Steam against PC ?.again, sorry for the stupid question.

i play via steam but if i am unable to connect to internet for some reason i just play in offline mode via steam. Not stupid question mate!

I buy a disk copy and then register it with steam. That gives you the convenience of steam and the option of PC. Also I like to have a disk copy just in case something happens. You can play on offline mode but that sometimes doesn't work for me.

i think steam is better because you get all the patches updated auto to the computer via steam instead of having to download from fm sites but thats just me

I use mobile broadband, and Steam won't recognise it, and while you can play offline sometimes it reqires an update every so often, meaning I have to continiously bring my laptop to a mates house to update Steam, which is a bit of a hassle. So basically if you're unsure of your internet connection I'd stick to a hard copy.
