Steve Bruce earlier announced that he was going to step down as Sunderland boss and take some time out of football. It was thought that the Black Cats would take a number of days to appoint a new man, however, they have tonight announced that Chris Moffatt, the former Irish international and injury hit ex-Hibernian player will take over. This is seen as a surprise appointment but Niall Quinn has tried to put Sunderland fans at ease by claiming “he was the most ambitious of those that were interviewed, his ideas of where to club could and should be matched ours, we’re delighted with the appointment.

Chris Moffatt has spoken of his delight at being appointed Sunderland manager today during his press conference. He claimed that his side were capable of challenging for Europe and surprising a few people, but only if they were to strengthen. “Obviously, the players that are here are extremely talented, the likes of Bent, Cattermole, Cana, Malbranque and Reid, they’re all great attacking players. I do think we need to bring in a few more players though, we’re top heavy. I would ideally want to bring in another defensive midfielder and a wing back. At the minute the squad is just too small.”

It is thought that Sunderland fans will agree with Moffatt and they’ll be interested to see how he’ll do during pre-season.

A wave of excitement has today swept over The North East as Sky Sports News has confirmed that Sunderland have completed their first two signings of the season. They’ve brought in Patrick Vieira from Inter Milan for an estimated £1.7m fee. What’s more, they have also signed West Ham’s Mark Noble for £5m which also sees Kieran Richardson go the other way. Both players are undoubtedly coups for the club and with more money reported to be in the kitty, Sunderland fans will hope that any future signings will see more players of this high calibre play at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland have today announced yet another signing. Oscar Cardozo has arrived from Benfica for a transfer fee of £7.5m. Cardozo is considered to be one of Europe's top strikers and is seen as a great capture and an ideal strike partner for Darren Bent, who's looked deadly during pre-season.

Days before the Premier League kicks off and there has been news of David Beckham returning to the league. He has signed on a 70k-a-week deal with Sunderland where he will join up with the likes of Patrick Vieira and Mark Noble.

Woar, what a result. My tactics were to play 4-1-4-1, allowing Vieira, Cattermole and Noble to dominate the midfield. We played narrowly, allowing Beckham to ping balls over the top for Bent to latch on to. Bent and Beckham just had a field day

Sunderland 1-3 Tottenham Keane 22,71 pen, Thomson 39 Cardozo 47
Changed to a 4-4-2 with Cardozo and Bent up front. We were desperately unlucky and should have got at least a point. We were great in the second half but the harsh penalty killed us.

Arsenal 1-1 Sunderland Bent 5 Bendtner 84
Heart breaking, Arsenal’s team was weakened through injury and I was hoping for three points, Bent arrived late in the box to convert an Andy Reid cross and it looked like we were in no danger until a mistake from George McCartney allowed Bendtner to score an easy header.

Carling Cup
Grimsby 0-2 Sunderland Healy 45, Murphy 81
We rested a lot of players and did enough to win this.

Sunderland 2-1 Blackburn Bent 15, 25 McCarthy 47
Again, relying on Bent’s brilliance but we played well apart from sloppy defending for their goal

Burnley 1-2 Sunderland Cardozo 18, Cattermole 51 Elliott 64
A decent three points, we were comfortable but yet again, the defence was very dodgy. Yet to keep a clean sheet in league.

Sunderland 1-0 Man United Cardozo 52
Amazing win. We completely shut them out, despite playing an open 4-4-2. There wasn’t a lot of chances in the game but one fell for Cardozo at the corner of the 18 yard box and with his left foot he drilled it in off the post. Great goal, great win

Carling Cup
Sunderland 0-1 Everton Cahill pen 36
A dull game which neither side deserved to win. We were just unable to create anything. Worrying sign.

Man City 1-1 Sunderland Bent 31, Adebayor 47 (Cana s/o 92)
Back to the league and we produced a great performance, we should have won. The goal was an awful mistake from our keeper, Gordon would have saved the tame shot 999/1000. Disappointing

Sunderland 2-1 Fulham Cardozo 15,38 Nevland 81
Cardozo is catching up with Bent’s goal tally rapidly. Very frustrating though, for the umpteenth time this season we give away a goal when we’re ahead, eventually it’ll hurt us.

Bolton 1-1 Sunderland Bent 16 Elmander 81
AGAIN! As predicted, conceding when ahead has hurt us. We were in control until a missed interception allowed them to score. We need to kill teams off.

Sunderland have today discovered that their top scorer Darren Bent will be out for up to a month!

Chelsea 1-1 Sunderland Noble 34 Liedson 64 (Cattermole s/o 84)
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Without Bent for the first time and we were brilliant but again, Gordon lets in a shot that was straight at him. Hard to believe and hard to bear.

Sunderland 3-1 Wigan Cardozo 5, 26, pen 51 McCulloch 22
I was happy with this result. After they pegged us back I feared the worst.

Sunderland 0-0 Everton
We sought revenge for our cup exit and it was the exact same game as the Carling cup game. No chances and no entertainment.

Liverpool 2-0 Sunderland Torres 46, 62
Nothing we could do, Torres was unplayable. Our first defeat against the top 4/5.

Try and jazz up the layout a bit with Screenshots etc.

Good luck with this :)
