Testing Tactics

Hi guys! In the previous years I've always used other people's tactics on this forum (great tactics, btw!) but this year I'd like to create my own tactic, using my own style, but I don't know how do you test your tactics. I mean do you have a specific method? For instance, do you skip the whole year or use a different program/league to test it before playing the real game? I hope somebody could help me, thank in advance!
