Welcome everyone!
This is my first attempt at a Football Manager story. I've been a keen football manager player for years now and play it for hours on end every day. I've decided to take control at Newcastle. The long term plan, of course, is to bring Champions League football to St.James' Park and who knows from there. I wanted a big team with a great history but with the potential to build up over time. Who better than Newcastle? I have big boots to fill as the successor to the likes of Alan Pardew, Kevin Keegan and the great Sir Bobby Robson I will try to post fairly regularly. I hope you enjoy my first ever Football Manager story!

"What is a club in any case?
Not the buildings or the directors or the people who are paid to represent it.
It’s not the television contracts, get-out clauses, marketing departments or executive boxes.
It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city.
It’s a small boy clambering up stadium steps for the very first time, gripping his father’s hand, gawping at that hallowed stretch of turf beneath him and, without being able to do a thing about it, falling in love." - Sir Bobby Robson

Pre-season!

Pre-season!
On a new save I always look at my squad, make my tactics (which I'll post at a later date) and sort out training so the team is focused on tactics. After doing all this it was time to get into my pre-season matches. Pre-season went very well. It started with the customary match against the Under-21 squad. We won 3-0, no more than you would expect. Gateshead away followed with a solid 2-0 win. A tour to Germany then arrived. Results didn't really matter to me it just gave me a chance to further assess my squad and gave me a better idea of who would be in the starting 11 come mid-August against Liverpool at home. The stature of my opponents may not have been massive but 2 wins and a draw left me absolutely chuffed. Still unbeaten in pre-season after 5 games, could I really complain? A 1-0 loss at the fortress to gritty French opponent Stade Rennais followed, it was just one of 'those' days. Pre-season finished on a high with a 3-0 win away at League 2 opponents Carlisle. Pre-season always just seems to get in the way on Football Manager but I couldn't help be pleased with 5 wins, 1 draw and only 1 loss. Facundo Ferreyra and Yoan Gouffran both stood out in pre-season with both bagging an impressive 5 goals each! The rest of the squad all performed solidly. Only 2 goals conceded in 7 games emphasised the impressive all round performance of the defence. Roll on 16th August at home to Liverpool!

Summer Transfers!

Summer Transfers!
The board gave me a transfer budget of £10 million with the aim to achieve a respectable league position.

Virgil Van Dijk, £7 million - After looking at my squad I decided the main position that I needed to sign a player of first team quality was centre back. After extensive scouting of players across Europe I decided the most realistic and value for money signing would be Celtic star Virgil Van Dijk. With Hull also interested I knew it could be tough. Eventually they accepted a bid of £7 million and contract negotiations were over pretty swiftly. An experienced centre back with the potential to still grow. Tall, strong, good on the ball. Just what I needed.

Mitchell Weiser, £725k - Another position I needed more strength in depth was on the wing. I found young right midfielder Weiser on the transfer market and saw him as a long shot. My first bid was accepted and contract negotiations were finished in a similar fashion. Mitchell signed within days and went straight into the squad. He is one for the future but also provides great rotation for either wing.

Mathieu Flamini, loan - Flamini was listed for loan by Arsenal. Centre midfield can be a position where injuries strike a lot on Football Manager and with Cheick Tiote already out injured I decided to take a punt on Flamini. He adds depth and experience to the squad. The kind of player who does all the jobs others don't want to do.

August 2014

August 2014
Before the season started I sacked my current assistant manager who remained from the reign of Alan Pardew. The only obvious option after the termination of Carver's contract was to promote Peter Beardsley to the role of assistant manager. A fan favourite during his playing time with Newcastle the decision was really a no brainer for me.

Team picked, team talk done, it was time for matchday 1.

Match 1. Liverpool (H) - Liverpool were first up for me, with the likes of Sturridge, Gerrard and Sterling all making the journey to St.James' Park. 3 points would've been terrific but going into the match I would've taken a point. 25 minutes gone, 2-0 down. With the crowd getting on the player's backs we were in need of something special to put life back into the performance. Step up Emmanuel Riviere. 2-1. Two of the pre-season stars then ran the show in the second half. A Facundo Ferreyra double and a cool penalty from Yoann Gouffran provided a 4-2 victory and sent the Newcastle fans home happy. Not only was it a fantastic win but the team also showed great spirit and desire to come back from 2-0 down.

Match 2. Man United (A) - A live match on Sky once again was up next. Man United away with the likes of Angel Di Maria on the opposition team, I wasn't feeling optimistic. We may have lost 1-0 to an 81st minute winner from Juan Mata but the lads once again showed a great performance against one of the Prem's big boys and were ultimately unlucky not to get a point. They certainly showed the country what we're all about.

Match 3. (Capital One Cup) Wolves (H) - I rotated the squad for this match as a few players were in need of a rest and the depth I have allowed me to do so. Wolves may have got 2 goals but inevitably the result was never in doubt. It was a comfortable win for the team and we progressed to the next round.

Match 4. Stoke (H) - It was back to a full strength side for a home games against Stoke, the first 15:00 kick off of the season. A comprehensive 3-0 win was no more than I expected as these are the kind of games we need to be winning if we are to stand any chance of challenging for Europa League qualification. This win left us in the top 4 after 3 games and topped a great first competitive month in charge of the Toon!
