Prologue
June 2005
The plane bumped on some turbulence shaking the cabin and waking me from the sleep I had been in since we last took off. As I stirred and slowly came round from the cramped, uncomfortable plane sleep I noticed on the small TV screen in the back of the seat in front, that we were over land and had 2 hours left of our flight.

I was cramped in the middle seat; to my left was an elderly German man, asleep himself. I leaned to the right to see if I could see what was under the plane as the day broke. As I leaned over I accidently woke her. Her beautiful blue eyes opened, her perfect smile developing on her perfect lips as she realised it was me.

“Hi” She whispered

“Hey you” I whispered backed “You ok?”

“I am now” As she leaned forward and kissed me. As our lips parted I glanced out of the window.

“Wow, look at that Sophie”
She turned and we both watched as the sun poked over the horizon, illuminating the ground below and highlight the deep red rock that is Uluru. It was truly stunning and something that will stick in mind forever.

Just over 3 hours later, we were walking out into the fresh, warm Australian air. The brightness was blinding, compared to the darkness in Thailand airport, the cramp Plane cabin and the Airport terminal. We both felt awful as we walked to our cab to get to our hotel. All in all, between the 2 and half hours drive to Heathrow, the 24 hour flying time, the hour stop over in Thailand we had been travelling for almost 29 hours.

Nobody could question my dedication to my career and Sophie’s Loyalty to me. Aged only 20 and Sophie 19 we had left everything, jobs, family, friends all of who had all doubted I had the ability, the skill and the dedication to actually do this, and that had only spurred me on. I had just travelled halfway around the world, with the woman I loved and with no guarantee of actually getting the job, leaving England behind me........................

So you have travelled to australia with your macbook to play football manager, nice|)

Chapter 1

Chapter one
Present day
July 2009
I woke up with a startle, a nervous startle at that. The bed empty next to me. The rest of the small flat empty and considering it was July it was quite dull. I had my breakfast and a quick shower, and dressed in my best suit I started to leave the flat ready for the quite possibly the biggest Interview of my career to date. As I left I glanced at the picture of me from 4 years ago, I was stood, lit only by a street light, behind me lit only by the moon, Sydney Opera house. I smiled to myself remembering the good times I had, had in Australia for those 4 years, although it wasn’t all good.

I suddenly remembered why I was nervous, The meeting, the biggest interview of my career to date. The stadium would have only been a short walk away, but I decided to drive as I find it relaxes me. As II got in to the car, I switch the radio on. “Greatest Day” by Take That was playing and I certainly hoped it would.

I turned the corner, and saw it, the main stand, a sight I’d seen many of times over the years. I parked up, stepped out of the car and took a deep breathe. The air smelt stale even for the summer. I walked into the reception, the area bathed in the colours and crest of the club. I introduced myself to the reception and then waited. The longest 30 minutes of my life passed and finally the receptionist gestured for to follow her. As we walked up the stairs and toward the board room, I couldn’t help but notice her perfectly form body.
She knocked and I enter the board room alone, where the chairman and a director awaited me. We talked for almost 2 hours. Discussing where they wanted the club at the end of season, and the long term future of the club, transfer budgets, and finally my contact. Then came the question I was waiting for.

“With such little experience in a management role, do you think you are the person who can achieve these goals?”

With out hesitation “Yes!”

“Well, Mr Curtis welcome to the club” With that the paper work was signed and sent to the F.A.

The official announcement would be made to the press early tomorrow at a small press conference. For now on the other hand, I was shown around the stadium, the changing room, the directors box, the dug out and finally We walked out to the middle of the pitch. I took another deep breathe, this time the air smelt fresher and cleaner. We stood there for just under an hour, talking about my memories of this place. Growing up just 10 miles away and just over 4 years since I was last here, I finally felt home again.

We left the pitch and finally He showed me the one place I had wanted, my new office, my new home. Small, but big enough with a TV on the wall, a big desk and a plush leather chair. On my desk a file.

“I had your assistant compile a team report, take it home, and read it, ready yourself for tomorrow. Ready yourself for your first day as Manager of this great club.”

I picked the file up, flicked through it before the chairman decided to leave me alone in my office. I officially didn’t start the job until tomorrow, but I could get some work done between now and then. The club was a little short of staff, so I sat behind my desk and contacted a few of my friends and a few contacts I had made in my time in Australia. I had only been back little over 2 months, And here I was taking my first job as a manager in England. I checked my watch, and headed back to the board room, where the director who had been in the meeting with me offered me a drink. We then walked through to the directors box, over looking the fresh looking grass of the pitch plunged into darkness and lit only by the bright moon in the sky. I told here some of my memories of watching football when I was growing up. The infamous European cup run in the early 90s being the one that stuck in my mind most.

She smiled at me, and sipped her wine.

“I think you are going to do great things at this club Mr Curtis”

“I hope so”

“I know so” Delia Smith replied “Welcome to Norwich City”

She smiled at me again as she left me alone in the Director’s box, looking out over the stadium, my new home. I smiled to myself as I sipped the wine she had gave. I’m a football manager in England at last, I’m manager of Norwich City!

Sydney

We’d been in Sydney 3 days, enough time to rid my body of the jetlag, and hopefully enough to to adjust to the conditions. We didn’t have much money, so were staying in a Hostel in North Sydney. As I sat on the public bus headed to Circular Quay, the sun was beating on the window, making it seem as if the bus was 300 degrees. The nerves were starting to kick in as the bus pulled into the quay. I had a 20 minute to wait for the next train, but 20 minutes in the train station at Circular quay, is just a chance to see some of the sight.

The train station over looks, the quay where the ferry ship out to the various destinations around the Sydney area, the quay itself is over shadowed by the one of the most famous bridges in the world, The harbour bridge. Which itself looks over the oddly beautiful opera house.

Within 30 minutes of boarding the train I was walking through the Sydney Olympic park, toward the main gym area over looked by the Telstra Stadium, where 2 years previous Johnny Wilkinson had dropped that kick in the World cup final. Although I was there to do some sight seeing, I was there to meet Pierre Littbarski the then current Sydney head coach.

We sat and talked over looking the main gym area, discussed a contract, which I agreed to, but before I signed it, I had to go through a medical. 30 minutes on that tread mill, felt like hours in the heat and humidity, maybe 3 days wasn’t enough for my body to adjust, I was exhausted after the treadmill, and the bike. A quick once over by the head Physio, and once again I found myself in the room face to face with Pierre Littbarski, this time in my hand a pen, in front of me a contract. I signed, shock hands with my new boss and was told to show up at Macquarie University for training, where I would be introduced to the main squad, but the second the pen touched that paper, I had an out of body experience, It was like I was floating above myself, watching as I signed my 1st professional playing contract. Steven Curtis, Sydney F.C’s newest player!

Anyone else confused as to what is going on? Are you a player or a manager?

So you're doing a flashback kinda thing, starting with your end and then going back over your career, how you got to that point?

Exactly j-gibbard.

Managing Norwich, but telling the story to exactly how i became the youngest Football league manager.

I will continue to to put the date at the top, i.e June 2005, July 2009. The next installment i ready, Just reading through etc. Will post later tonight.

Thank you all for the support, and hopefully it wont be too confusing.

These first few posts have been great, keep it up. Its good to see someone coming up with a new way to describe their story. I look forward to reading the next chapter.

I like the layout! A real story :D

Chapter 3
August 8th 2009
Norwich

I’d only been with Norwich a month, but already had formed a strong relationship with the backroom staff, and rekindled my Relationship with Ian Crook, who I played under at Sydney in 2006.

With very limited transfer funds, and the fact Norwich were starting this season in the 3rd tier of English football, I had, had problems actually signing player permanently, I had managed to sign Craig Lindfield and Lars Stubhaug on free transfers. I had also managed to bring in 2 loan players as well, Gavin Hoyte (Arsenal) and Danny Rose (Tottenham) to boost my squad. Despite the limited funds, and limited resources to bring people in, I was happy with the resources I had already got. Grant Holt, Wes Hoolahan, Darrell Russell, Jon Otsemobor and Gary Doherty are all player which most Championship sides would be lucky to have. And far more than adequate to get Norwich out of this division and into the Championship. 1 step closer to where the club, the board, the fans and I wanted to be. 1 step closer to the Premier League!

Pre-Season had been a success as well, winning 5 of our 6 friendlies, beating York (2-0), Lowestoft (6-0), Mansfield (3-0), GH Academy (6-0) Dereham (2-0) and King’s Lynn (5-1). The only blip in pre-season was a 3-0 lose to Aston Villa. A pre-season I, the board and the fans were all happy with. With stand out performances from Rose, Russell, Hoolahan and Holt I was exceedingly confident that Norwich City would be able to compete for the title, and the book makers felt the same, making Norwich and Charlton, who themselves had been unbeaten in pre-season, joint favourites. And now it was time to put my team to it’s first real test. My first match in front of my clubs home fans. Colchester on the opening day of the season.
