“If anyone can replace Rafa, it’s him,” claimed Martin Broughton. “Don’t be ridiculous! A Rugby coach in Soccer! We have some of the most accomplished football managers in the world queuing up for this job; Mark Hughes, Manuel Pellegrini, Marcello Lippi!” Tom Hicks rose from his chair, fuming with anger and confusion. “Calm down Tom, he’ll be here soon. Let’s think about this logically, let’s remember our criteria.” Martin responded, “He’s English, He’s experienced, He’s respected.”

I hadn’t been this nervous in years. I was a contender for one of the most coveted jobs in football, Manager of Liverpool FC. After fruitlessly dipping my toe into the management pond at Southampton a few years ago, I was concerned that my application would be ridiculed. However, such a promising reply from Mr Broughton had sparked my enthusiasm. I had been working tirelessly to prepare myself for today’s opportunity.

***

I stood at the main entrance, “This Is Anfield,” proudly written on the stadium. The place reeked of nostalgia and history. Huge banners of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard hung around the stadium, I knew how important those two would be this season, After a quick tour of the club’s impressive museum and modern facilities, I was informed that my slot was in ten minutes in the executive suite.

***

Shaking outside the suite, I overheard Martin, Tom and George discussing business ideas and possible solutions to Liverpool’s financial situation. I knew player funding would be very tight under Mr Hicks and Mr Gillette, so I had already begun scouting possible low cost targets.

***

Soon after, I was welcomed into the suite..... This was my one chance to be manager of Liverpool Football Club.

REDS NAME LEGENDARY RUGBY COACH AS MANAGER

New Liverpool Manager Sir Clive Woodward lifts the Webb Ellis Rugby World Cup in 2003
SkySports understands that Liverpool FC have, in the last few hours, appointed ex-international rugby coach Sir Clive Woodward as manager. This will come as a surprise to both fans and pundits throughout the country, since he had not been considered a candidate by the media. Most Liverpool fans were expecting either the previous man city manager Mark Hughes or ex-galaticos coach Manuel Pellegrini to take helm at Anfield.
***
Woodward, 53, has already attempted football management. However, his Director of Football role at Southampton was short lived and ended under speculation that Woodward was unable to handle the politics of Football. He then entered a barren spell and has not managed for several years.
***
Despite his unconvincing start in football, Woodward is best known for his celebrated career in Rugby Union as a coach of firstly Bath RUFC but secondly and more notably England from 1997-2004. His England Side completed the grand slam in 2003 before going to famously win the Webb Ellis World Cup, beating Australia in their back yard. Unfortunately, Woodward’s rugby career ended distastefully. In 2005, he was appointed as head coach for the Lions’ tour to New Zealand. The Lions lost all three test matches and his selections were widely criticised.
***
This appointment is seen by many Liverpool fans as an illogical, irrational decision due to lack of experience Woodward has in the sport. A young fan, Kirk Bentan, was eager to vent his opinion when he spotted SkySports’ cameras outside Anfield. “Er...Well ye’know I was hoping we would get Mr Pellegrini in from Madrid because he’s ..... err could keep the Spaniards happy. This guy has no experience and I think as soon as these owners leave, he will be shown the door too.”
