Irvine: I quit!

Today former Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine had released a statement saying that he had left the club months after he took the job, this is what he had to say about his departure ,
' I am very sad to be leaving a club like Sheffield Wednesday but, we are staring administration in the face and i don't feel that my job is safe, the main reason for that is a takeover , if the club got took over i could get shown the door and i don't wan't that to happen, i wish the next manager and the club all the best'

Sturrock returns !

Sheffield Wednesday have re-appointed Paul Sturrock as there manager once again , Sturrock took Sheffield Wednesday to the 2005 play off final . This is how it happened ...

Sturrock revitalised Sheffield Wednesday's fortunes and they finished fifth in League One at the end of the 2004-05 season, qualifying for the promotion playoffs. They defeated Brentford 3-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals, moving them into the playoff final on May 29, 2005 at the Millennium Stadium. 41,000 Wednesdayites descended on Cardiff for what was the biggest game in twelve years for the club. They weren't to be disappointed as the Owls took a 1-0 lead through Jon-Paul McGovern on the stroke of halftime. However, Hartlepool fought back and took a 2-1 lead with 20 minutes of the game remaining. Sturrock made a brave triple substitution bringing on 18-year old striker Drew Talbot and the Owls' top scorer of the season, Steve MacLean (who had been out injured for the previous three months and had not kicked a ball). They combined with 10 minutes left as the Owls levelled the game 2-2. Talbot was adjudged to have been pushed down inside the box and Sheffield Wednesday were awarded a controversial penalty, which also resulted in the dismissal of Hartlepool player Westwood. MacLean duly slotted home the resultant penalty. They went on to win 4-2 after extra time, goals from Glenn Whelan and Drew Talbot, achieving promotion to the Championship.

' I am delighted to be back here at Hillsborough , Sheffield Wednesday are a great team and i think the squad Alan (Irvine) has built already is good enough for the Championship but i would like to add a few more players to make sure we gain promotion '

Paul Sturrock has today announced he has completed his summer spending by adding a further 4 players to his squad , they are as follow ...

Craig Mackail-Smith - £850,000

He is a dealy striker and he showed that two years ago when Peterborough were in League 1 and he scored 23 goals.

Graham Alexander - £250,000

He is a very experienced defender and is the master of penalty kicks.

' It feels great to be here , they are a great club and have real promise, i think they will gain promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking and that's why i have joined '

Darius Vassell - Free Transfer

Darius is a former England international and is a great powerful striker.

Burton O'Brian - £230,000
