Hamburger Sport-Verein e.V. , commonly known as Hamburger SV, Hamburg or HSV , is a German sport club based in Hamburg, its largest branch being its football department. Although the current HSV was founded in June 1919 from a merger of three earlier clubs, it officially traces its origin to 29 September 1887 when the first of the predecessors, SC Germania, was founded. Until 2018 when the team were relegated for the first time in history, HSV's football team had the distinction of being the only team that had played continuously in the top tier of the German football league system since the founding of the club at the end of World War I. It was consequently also the only team that had played in every season of the Bundesliga since its foundation in 1963.

HSV has won the German national championship six times, the DFB-Pokal three times and the League Cup twice. The team's most successful period was from the mid-1970s until the mid-1980s when, in addition to several domestic honours, they won the 1976–77 European Cup Winners' Cup and the 1982–83 European Cup. The outstanding players of this period were Horst Hrubesch, Manfred Kaltz, and Felix Magath, all of whom were regulars in the German National Team. To date, HSV's last major trophy was the 1986–87 DFB-Pokal.

HSV play their home games at the Volksparkstadion in Bahrenfeld, a western district of Hamburg. The club colours are officially blue, white and black but the home kit of the team is white jerseys and red shorts. The team's most common nickname is "die Rothosen" (the Red Shorts). As it is one of Germany's oldest clubs, it is also known as der Dinosaurier (the Dinosaur). HSV have rivalries with Werder Bremen, with whom they contest the Nordderby, and Hamburg-based FC St. Pauli, with whom they contest the Hamburg derby.

HSV is notable in football as a grassroots organisation with youth development a strong theme. The club had a team in the Women's Bundesliga from 2003 to 2012 but it was demoted to Regionalliga level because of financial problems. Other club departments include badminton, baseball, basketball, bowling, boxing, cricket, darts, ice hockey, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, handball, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation exercises. These departments represent about 10% of the club membership. HSV is one of the biggest sports clubs in Germany with over 84,000 members in all its departments and stated by Forbes to have been among the 20 largest football clubs in the world.

Why Hamburg?

To be honest I've enjoyed my York save but I also fancied a save where I don't rely on young players being released from bigger clubs and fancied a different country and I have always enjoyed German football and to be able to try and get a club with such a big history back to the top will be something special

Hamburg is a club that should be playing at a higher level, than in the second tier of German football. They are six time winners of the German top flight, they’ve won the DFB-Pokal success on three occasions, lifted the Cup Winners Cup in 1977 & even won the European Cup in 1983.

kI8N3Fym.png

However, their last success was a Pokal in 1987 so it’s safe to say, the team is starved of silverware.

Perhaps more famously though, they proudly stood as the only Bundesliga ever-present – never having suffered relegation. That distinction though, was wiped out in the summer of 2018, when a decade long decline finally caught up with the club & they fell through the trap door. They are now in their 4th season in the second flight and I plan to make it their last as we look to get back to the top of European football

Season 1

Squad Overview

GAtGMx7.png

After a quick look at the squad I can see that squad depth shouldn't be an issue as we have a large squad which should help us get promoted. We have a couple of young players though that are going to be key for us over the next few seasons and they will be Josha Vagnoman and Faride Alidou but the key will be holding onto them. Another player to watch is Mario Vuskovic who is a 6'2" central defender who we actually have the chance to sign permanently for £3million over the course of the season. I don't see any real need to sign players this window unless we can find some bargains that will improve the squad which I don't see. With it being a young squad some experience wouldn't got a miss

Transfers

So we end up selling 1 player and its somebody I thought would be key for us this season on the wing but we sell Bakery Jatta to Hoffenheim for £2.8m and its something we couldn't turn down and I don't expect him to be much use after this season.

P3iUZdd.png

We did end up bringing 4 players in with 2 on loan and 2 on permanent deals. With the need of experience coming in we signed Holger Badstuber on a free transfer and he will see game time over the course of the season and in the cups.

Amyn is a young AMC my scouts recommended and if he develops he should see the first team in a couple of seasons.

Our two loans are a couple of coups Cherki will probably play down the LW and at 18 can be a great player in the future for wherever he ends up. Silva was a deadline day signing though that I couldn't turn down as wolves are paying all of his wages and he will now lead the line for the rest of the season.

Preseason

iAFLTRR.png

You can really ignore the Bayern and Rangers results as they put out youth teams as expected and we ran riot over them so nothing to really get excited about but we won all our games and scored plenty of goals as well which is a good sign.

Expectations

jP6tuec.png

Nothing out the ordinary here as we are expected to be promoted and reach the 3rd round of the cup. The league should be interesting though as we will be fighting it out with Schalke, Hannover and Werder Bremen.

The Start of the Season

Ckllryq.png

Well we start away to Schalke which I don't think we could have a harder starting game but at least we get it out the way first. We also have the first Hamburger derby against St Pauli as well so its going to be a fun month.

August

Schalke 04 v Hamburg

ooC9qDt.png

Not the winning start we wanted but we put in a good game against the team expected to win the league so we'll happily take a point.

Hamburg v Dynamo Dresden

CH6guje.png

We bag our first win of the season with a great 4 minutes of action as we score from 2 set pieces.

DFB Polka 1st Round
Wehen Wiesbaden v Hamburg

0De6UJO.png

We were able to rotate the squad a bit here and it did not start well falling behind in the 1st minute but we did manager to get it back 4 minutes later before having to rely on a penalty to see us through to the 2nd round.

St Pauli v Hamburg

zPiIptT.png

Our first derby of the season and we are victorious thanks to another 4 minute double for the 2nd time in 3 games.

Hamburg v Darmstadt 98

PHbNYAT.png

We're becoming 2 goal specialists it seems as its the 4th game in a row we've scored 2

Heidenheim v Hamburg

CCP5Guv.png

We've done it yet again here but the important thing is we're doing just enough to edge out the other teams as we find our rhythm.

League

0mMxiyn.png

Well we sit 2nd after 5 games but its a long way to go so lets see how it goes

September

JiSRLlc.png

A big month ahead as we have another derby against Werder Bremen and then a big game against the early league leaders.

September

Hamburg v Sandhausen

hurgGoE.png

Our most convincing win yet of the season as Fabio Silva comes in and gets a debut goal so hopefully the move pays off. We seem to becoming set piece specialists as well with 2 goals from corners

Werder Bremen v Hamburg

yBsTNh7.png

Our first loss of the season in the derby of all things as well but we knew they were going to be a big challenge.

Hamburg v Nurnberg

M1mZmGb.png

We drop more points as we same so close to being able to go top of the league but sadly we let our heads go down at the end and it cost us

League

DE4VPZU.png

We still sit 2nd after 8 games so still a long way to go but we have teams right behind us

October

rzzis8o.png

Some decent games this month to look forward to and the next round of the cup which will be a big challenge for us to progress in.

Club Debt

uhuGG3G.png

One thing I didn't realise when I took over was how much we were paying out every month to cover loans. We are forking out just shy of £1m until the end of the year for it to then drop down to under £500,000

October

Erzgebirge Aue v Hamburg

Ltxc6YA.png

We get another big win here and the stand out performer was our left back scoring 2 great goals from just outside the box.

Hamburg v Fortuna Dusseldorf

TkAcSaw.png

We got really luck here and scored from a very late corner. A draw would of been a fair result but we won't complain.

Paderborn v Hamburg

l6pOqED.png

This was a poor result as we just couldn't find the all important second goal to finish them off and in the end it cost us and to make things worse we got a sending off right at the end as well

DFB Pokal 2nd Round
Hamburg v Mainz 05

vyUCLmV.png

What a game, Silva really stepped up here after not scoring in the previous 3 games. We did make it difficult for ourselves though thanks to Reis being sent off with half an hour to go but we held on to make it into the 3rd round.

Hamburg v Holstein Kiel

EYz9Et7.png

Got to hate this game some times. Can go and get a big win in the cup and then come crashing back down in the league to a much worse team bit we'll just have to come back stronger in the next game.

League

9peFmLi.png

We just manage to hold onto 2nd just now whereas Heidenheim seem to be opening up a wee bit of a gap just now at the top as shock leaders.

November

trPGt93.png

A nice short month thanks to international games but its 3 games we will look to winning

November

Karlsruhe v Hamburg

6jGsdKJ.png

What a win, especially since we went down to 10 men as well. Alidou had a great game down the right wing ending in an excellent hat-trick for us.

Hamburg v Jahn Regensburg

adkrFCF.png

A really poor result here, especially after our last result and we couldn't even take advantage of the extra man and it costs us 2 points.

Hamburg v Ingolstadt 04

edX9H9z.png

Again we struggled at home here with us snapping at chances but thankfully Cherki was able to score a screamer from outside the area to get us the 3 points.

League

6jwGwjM.png

We are now 7 points off top spot, we're going to have to try and pull it back soon as we near the halfway stage. We do hold a 3 point gap over 3rd spot though which we need to extend.

December

dDkGPUy.png

Two big games this month to look forward to against Hannover and Schalke which we need to do well in to close in on top spot.

December

Hannover v Hamburg

MYLk1IE.png

A bit of a boring game here and we were lucky to be able to pull it back after falling behind and then the 2nd half was just awful for both teams.

Hamburg v Hansa Rostock

BIOrFAB.png

A much better performance in the second half here as Leibold gets another goal to justify the interest being shown in him by other clubs on the run up to the transfer window before Silva doubles the lead.

Hamburg v Schalke 04

85BMfZy.png

What a performance from the team here as we absolutely destroyed them thanks to Silva as he puts in his best performance of the season so far with 4 excellent goals.

League

lLEG4u8.png

Well we've managed to close the gap to 4 points now along with opening the gap over 3rd to 7 points as well.

Youth Preview

yCbTISA.png

Well if this is true then we could be in for a beast of a youth intake but we will take it with a pinch of salt as usual

January

geOkOFU.png

We've got the big derby again this month after the winter break but most of the month will be spent looking for new players and trying to trim the squad as well

January

Transfers

Well January brings the winter transfer window and we used it to sell a few players who's deals were ending at the end of the season to get cash for them along with selling players on decent wages who just weren't getting game time and weren't in the teams long term plans and in the process we made around £1,000,000

skHREnE.png

For players coming in we made 3 transfers with 2 players joining just now.

We signed Alan Rodriguez from Boston River for £1,500,000 and he will instantly become the starting right winger for us and can hopefully develop into a decent player for us.

FTEuj1V.png

Next with Fabio Silva being a bit hot and cold in front of goal I was in the market for another striker to compete with him and we managed to bring in one of the hottest talents in German football by brining in Youssoufa Moukoko in on loan for the rest of the season from Dortmund.

5JlolQP.png

The third deal we did was just using up our transfer budget to make the loan deal of Mario Vuskovic permanent as he has been a rock in our defence and £3,000,000 could be a real bargain for us in the long run

Dynamo Dresden v Hamburg

KG7aYYa.png

Moukoko has a dream debut for us as he pops up on the stroke of half time to get us an important goal which was just enough to get us the 3 points.

Hamburg v St Pauli

EatsYs9.png

Our big derby game and St Pauli made it very difficult for us but thankfully Cherki did enough to get the break through as we get the 3 points.

League

YqAx9I7.png

We've managed to close the gap at the top to just 2 points now so its only a matter of time before we get top spot.

February

vXUXeKb.png

We have the cup again to start us off this month in a huge game before we have our chance against the league leaders.

February

DFB Pokal 3rd Round
Hamburg v RB Leipzig

c8EWwaL.png

What a game, we were so close in winning in normal time but we conceded with the final kick of the ball but we managed to hold on through extra time and then move into the next round thanks to penalties

Darmstadt 98 v Hamburg

BUXt6vL.png

Moukoko is showing that he could been an incredible signing banging in a great hat-trick in a convincing win for us.

Hamburg v Heidenheim

BUXt6vL.png

A must win game for us against the team top of the league and its decided by q 2nd minute corner as Vuskovic is a bit of a corner specialist for us

Sandhausen v Hamburg

FfBcx5C.png

We just keep winning just now as we get another good win after us taking top spot in the league.

Hamburg v Werder Bremen

gvwAPUm.png

I thought we'd blown this one when conceding with just 6 minutes to go but Moukoko pops up with a final touch of the game winner for another big win for us.

League

ZeQeND9.png

Well its al change this month as we're now top of the league by 4 points and look good for going up unless we throw it away.

March

lY8MQrK.png

We've got the cup quarter final to look forward to which is a game we should be winning as they sit bottom of the league just now

DFB Pokal Quarter Final
Erzgebirge Aue v Hamburg

M7M8oYc.png

With them sitting bottom we were able to rotate a few players here but it was regular winger Alidou who stole the show here with 2 great goals before Silva took his chance of a rare start to get a goal as well and fire us into the semi final to face Bayern.

Nurnberg v Hamburg

qAOzur3.png

Moukoko seems to have a knack of scoring a hat-trick when being dropped for a game so maybe something I need to look at doing a bit more often if thats how he responds.

Hamburg v Erzgebirge Aue

HrJGOQK.png

A great game for our defenders as 3 of them get on the score sheet thanks to some excellent set piece goals.

Fortuna Dusseldorf v Hamburg

dCsHzXf.png

A bit of a boring draw for us that hopefully won't cost us come the end of the season.

League

4BSEtQ8.png

We've got a 5 point gap at the top now so surely can't throw that away over the last 2 months.

Youth

Well as expected the youth intake wasn't anywhere near as good as promised but we do have one player they think will make it

t6Ok2Zw.png

I'm not so convinced though as Niemann doesn't look all that special to me but we'll see how he develops

QODblWq.png

April

DEZSu0j.png

A huge semi final for us and every game is a must win in the league as well to ensure we go up as Champions

April

Hamburg v Paderborn

fgfHK8Z.png

A great first half where we were able to take a commanding lead, a wee bit disappointed to concede though and not get the clean sheet.

Holstein Kiel v Hamburg

We're making winning a good habit now as we manage to score another 3 goals.

Hamburg v Karlsruhe

74r1aSG.png

A really poor result here as we lose our unbeaten run to 10 men as we fight back twice before then conceding late on. This could really cost us.

DFB Pokal Semi Final
Hamburg v Bayern Munich

qqJaYZQ.png

Well we knew what to expect here an we did well in the first half to keep it at 0-0 before the onslaught came

Jahn Regensburg v Hamburg

HLAJHNu.png

Our third loss in a row here and 2nd in a row in the league but with only 3 days between games it took its toll on our players

Ingolstadt 04 v Hamburg

bHi9nay.png

We bounce back with a very good win which was badly needed to get our title challenge back on track.

League

MUJ4L3v.png

Well we have now secured promotion but will it be going up as champions or not with just 2 games remaining and only a point in it.

May

9oOfgx8.png

Budget

SRjcI5T.png

I'm not going to lie the transfer budget is pretty disappointing but at least our wage budget has over tripled so we can still hopefully bring in some decent players

The Final 2 Games

Hamburg v Hannover

CkTlXAg.png

We knew going into these final two games anything less than a win could be fatal and we do just enough to get by here and keep our 1 point lead at the top.

Hansa Rostock v Hamburg

rVspeKb.png

You would think top against bottom as the final game of the season was a certain win for us but the pressure gets to us all sometimes as we fall at the final hurdle and drop a very important 2 points.

League

K2rBEXr.png

Well there you have it we finish in 2nd spot as we bottled it in the final game but at least we achieved promotion and finished where the press expected us to.

Plans for next season

Well we need a bit of a rebuild I reckon but thats going to be difficult to do on just £5million but we have already made a couple of moves in the transfer market on players who's contracts were expiring to come in a bolster the team. We have also extended the loans of Cherki, Silva and Moukoko for another season with us picking up the wages this time.

Season 2

Transfers Out

Well with us being promoted we needed to have a bit of a clear out and thankfully we didn't need to sell any of our big players from last season.

SnpNO1g.png

We also sold a youth player from our 2nd team (Tom Sanne) to Dortmund for £5million but its not showing up for some reason. He probably would of made the first team squad over the next season or two but we really needed the cash to reinvest in the money in the first team squad.

Transfers In

Well we've brought in 10 new players this season with a half and half split on youth and experience with 5 a piece. It even worked out an even split on free and paid transfers.

5fBuP7w.png

We made 2 huge transfers that could cause financial problems if we get relegated as Dumir and Lucca we've only payed £2million each upfront with the rest over the next 3 years so it will cost us out our next few budgets but hopefully be worth it in the long run. Kenedy and Lakaku come in as backups whereas Vinhas and Carvalho are coming in as 2 players for the future but Carvalho will see plenty of first team football this season.

Dani Ceballos(Real Madrid are paying £64,000 a week towards his wages) will go straight into midfield with Alex Fernandez for the Spaniards to link up together.

Tactic

Last season we played with an attacking 4-2-3-1 and I feel we'll get torn to pieces if we go with that this season by a lot of teams so we're going to mix things up and go with a 4-2-2-2 instead to try and make the most of our strikers this season.

aIFiiEI.png

Preseason

e0uFJU2.png

Another strong preseason for us as long as you ignore the Bayern result as they obviously learnt from last season and put out a full strength team against us so safe to stay we're still a long way off them

Expectations

3ikEnN0.png

Not much expected from us in the league at all, so no pressure for us really. In the cup they might be asking a bit much for us to reach the quarter final but it really does just depend on the draw.

The Start

UsYzCG7.png

We're going to have a busy few months thanks to the World Cup so we'll need to do our best to manage our players fitness but hopefully our squad can cope

August

DFB Pokal 1st Round
Trier v Hamburg

sW2WUqy.png

Well Lucca makes an instant impact in his first game. I went with our strongest XI here as I wanted to prove a point and show we are in this competition to win it.

Gladbach v Hamburg

IEkT3cs.png

Not the dream start I had hoped for and conceding the early goal certainly didn't help as we were on the back foot straight away and we were lucky to keep it at 1-0

Hamburg v RB Leipzig

SPtYE73.png

This is more like it as it goes our way this time with the early goal and then went defensively to make sure we held onto the lead.

Stuttgart v Hamburg

qA81xIk.png

I thought we should have been winning this game going into it but to concede so quickly after scoring the opener said it all in this game. We were lucky to get an equaliser but Silva came off the bench and scored a great goal coming in on the left wing.

Hamburg v Eintracht Frankfurt

PLWJ1v9.png

Finally our best performance as Lucca and Moukoko have started working in tandem and form their partnership with them both being involved in each others goals.

Augsburg v Hamburg

Gqd1QrH.png

To have the performance that we did against Frankfurt I expected more against Augsburg but we held on for the 3 points which is what we need against these sorts of teams.

Bayern Munich v Hamburg

odxZpAz.png

Well I knew we'd get beat here but I hoped for better. After the sending off they were able to just pick us off time and time again and 4-0 was probably kind.

League

fU4ZDE2.png

Well after the opening 6 games we sit 6th and still have a game in hand. I'll be happy with a top 10 finish this season.

September

PUNHnUK.png

A nice game to start with the cup again before a mix of difficulty in the league but we should pick up at least 1 win this month
