They can't cut the mustard in Europe. I need to know why.

i am currently with man utd, in my 3rd season and really struggling to break my CL duck. Last two seasons have been really strong in the league and domestic cups, challenging for the majority and winning a couple. European clashes have been boring affairs and we never look like coming out on top.

Perhaps i'm using the wrong setup when it comes to going into european ties. Here is my generic line up;

I'm currently playing a 442 system. Team below;

Neuer

Evra- Full back (Support)
Howedes- Defend
Ferdinand-Defend
Srna- Full back (support)

Bale- (Attacking) winger
De Rossi- (Defensive) ball winning
Pastore- (Advanced) playmaker
Nani/Valencia- (Attacking) winger

Rooney- Deep lying forward (support)
Chicharito- Poacher (attack)

Balanced philosophy
Short passing style
Disciplined
Press the opposition frequently

My primary playmaker is Pastore (for obvious reasons)
Target man is rooney, playing it to his feet

It would be great to gather some feedback from you all and see whether or not you can see any glaring errors in my setup/lineup.

Thanks,

Maybe try spreading it? (K)

Double posting though dude.

as in giving the team more width?
i know!!! i accidently placed it into the players section instead of tactics and as im new im didnt know how to remove that one :s 7

cheers for the feedback though bro

Personsally mate, id buy a CB to replace Ferdiand Such as Hummels or Subotic.

Have a back up formation. Although 4-4-2 can do well in Europe, it's not ideal.

maybe a 4-2-4 putting your wingers higher up the pitch.. has worked well for me

Fatigue? What are your rotation players like? Knockout stages of the champions league need aquad rotation otherwise your team will be entering the games with 85% condition at the start.

I've done well in prem and CL purely because I have an entire 25 man squad that I rotate. That way, I have room for injury, and without injury, my players never go into a game less than 97%.

They go into games at about 92% usually, and thats after a day off from training. I need a back up striker for Rooney. Know any good deep lying forwards?

Well, in the real world English teams usually make two adjustments when playing in Europe;
1. They usually avoid 4-4-2 or at least modify it so that one striker goes back in midfield a lot. Even Redknapp said before the Werder Bremen game, that going there and playing 4-4-2 would be suicide. We did play with 4-4-2 in the UEFA cup under Jol and Ramos but Keane and Berbatov go deep a lot, although it still didn't get us as far as we could've gone.
2. They usually play at a slower tempo as they will find themselves in unfamiliar conditions in which a team can't just aim to play without the ball for half the game.

I suggest having another system (if you like your current system) which has a slower tempo and utilises a 4-5-1/4-2-3-1/4-4-1-1 and add it to your match preparation.

Rooney? Berbatov?

I'd still prefer an AMC instead.

Berbatov was shipped off to Italy on a free as we couldnt agree personal terms on a new contract. So its left me really light on the striker front. I think going for two holding mids would suit my team better so I'm going to give that a go in the first KO stage.

From Fiorentina? Hmm would they be willing to let him go for a reasonable fee? im relatively short on cash due to the purchases of De Rossi and Pastore, as you can imagine.

It depends on the year. At the start I think I've nabbed him for 7.5m. For what he becomes, it is a great price. If you're in 2011/2012 then it might be inflated a little, I don't know.

i'm in 2012/13 now. So I think he may be much much more than 7.5m. I'm thinking Borja Baston from Athletico?

try 4-2-3-1 pushing bale and valencia/nani up (defensive winger/winger - support).. and rooney to AMC (trequartista)

play wide, or try a 4-2-3-1 wingers formation only for CL.

if minnows, it up to u, but if ur playign in the KO rounds, try teh backup formation.

Ur 4-4-2 CMs is strong, or it just take time to get into the flow.
