It is important to either use fast defenders or defend deep. Your assistant will tell you this before near enough every game, and he isn't wrong. It is rare that you will get away with slow defenders high up the pitch.

Also, never underestimate the importance of holding midfielders. Without at least one midfielder playing a holding role (support or defend essentially, but players on support will require a lot of stamina to defend effectively)

Also, avoid attack duties for full-backs, no matter who you have. If you like your full-backs to push forward, I recommend using support. I don't know if it's just me, but I have NEVER had an effective defence when setting full-backs to attack.

This advice is only from my personal experience. I'm far from a master tactician, but hopefully it is useful.

well my defenders defend deep and quite nippy plus i have a cm defend in my 442

If defenders are fast and you play attacking football you should have them push up as the ai could be exploiting the space between the midfield and the defense. You might be defending a little to deep which is not a good thing either.

I play attacking football as well and my 2 CB is set to central defender (cover + stopper) where the more aggressive CB will play stopper and faster CB will play cover... It works for me so far...

try one as stopper and one as cover/ball player just as JrKiller suggests, works for me too.

They're a rarity though, wasteful buying one really, just make your CB's sit deep and run with the ball.

I tend to play one centre back who is quicker and has good anticipation as a covering defender, the other set to stopper. An ideal example is Vidic and Rio, Vidic as the battling, ball winning defender going in for all the headers, and Rio as the covering ball playing defender sweeping loose balls that get through. I play with Spurs so usually have Bassong and Dawson. Bassong as cover and Dawson as stopper. This works most of the time, but there are still going to be games where it doesn't work as well. Then you need to start looking at stopping certain players. If there's an attacking midfielder that causing your defence problems get your holding midfielder to man mark him. This usually works for me. I remember a game against Man City, Tevez was playing as a roaming forward and my defence didn't know what to do with him. He scored 2 goals in the first half pulling my defence all over the place. I then got Palacios to man mark him and then Tevez hardly got a touch the rest of the game. I wish I'd done it earlier!

Also, a lot of people don't seem to use the opposition instructions, but I do. If they are playing with one striker set it to tight marking, closing down and hard tackling. If they are playing 2 strikers start with both set to tight marking, then if one striker is causing more of a problem to your defence set him on closing down as well. You can check before the game starts to see which striker has the highest work rate.
