I've been playing Football Manager for half a year now and although I have the first-team phase of the game down, I'm having a difficult time in terms of developping and bringing in young players whom I hope to eventually feature on my first team squad.
A bit of background: I've been more of an NFL fan for most of my life, and naturally, Madden has been a big part of my gaming life. For so long, I've played Madden in a "manager" style, without touching gameplay and merely running the team, signing players and bringing in young raw talents that eventually take the place of departing free agents.
Often, great players straight out of college, I plug them straight into my offense. It's more common in american football, but not so much in soccer, where most players generally peak at a later age.
My difficulties are centered around what to do with great, under 20 players in terms of eventually having them play on the first team. When investing in young 16-17 year old players, is there a proper strategy in determining whether I should keep their development in-house or loan them out for first-team experience. Along with that, once in their young 20s is it best to send them right to the end of my first teaem bench, or continue to send them out on loan?
I'm also not accustomed to the use of the Reserves team. While playing FM2010, I totally disregarded my reserves and only had players on my First Team and Under 20s. It definitely felt like there was a step missing regarding development cause my players would complain often about not wanting to be loaned out.
Seems like Baseball and Hockey are closest to the management style of these players, what with baseball having the different AAA, AA, etc levels, and hockey having the Junior/minors/nhl leagues.
Any input for those of us that're having trouble with this? More specifically, what should my roster/depth chart look like? Aside from the first eleven, how many more players should I have on the squad, how many should be on the reserves? How often should I be buying young players for my under 20s, how many "hot prospects" should I have on it?
