TSG 1899 Hoffenheim

Little known in England and living the shadows of the Bundesliga's dominant trio of Bayern, Dortmund and Schalke, TSG Hoffenheim, or Hoffeinheim for short, have enjoyed the very definition of mid-table mediocrity in recent years.

View attachment 245828

In this series I will attempt to disturb the seemingly permanent domination that Bayern have enjoyed within Germany. The aims of the series are:

Bundesliga title within 3 seasons
Domestic cup within 3 seasons
European trophy within 5 seasons

1st Season Objectives

The club are financially healthy and have a young squad that has great potential but currently lack the quality to seriously compete. So I have the 1st season objectives as:

View attachment 245823

These objectives will not apply undue pressure to the squad to preform and allow me to learn the squad without the threat of the sack looming. The budget may be smaller than I could get with more ambitious objective but it is big enough to make maybe 1 or 2 canny signings.

Later today I will post a squad breakdown of key players, transfer targets and tactics

Good choice of teams, a lot of potential in Hoffenheim, good luck I'll be following!

As you can see I'm playing a 4-2-3-1. The idea is to play an easy system for the players to grasp, allowing familiarity to increase quickly. The instructions I have are minimal to allow players to flourish within the system. The AP is on attack to allow the DLP to have time and space so spread the play around from a deeper position. I find that if both are on support then the AP tends to sit on the DLP, stifling both of them.

KEY PLAYERS

View attachment 245788

Volland will be absolutely crucial within my Hoffenheim side. He will be playing as the central striker as one the strengths of this Hoffenheim side is the amount and quality of wingers. By playing him at ST I can get Schmid, a talented RW, into the side. He will only be sold if I get a £25+ million offer which I can reinvest into the squad.

View attachment 245784

Baumann is exactly what I want in a goalkeeper. His main goalkeeping attributes (Reflexes, Handling, 1v1s) are all 16+ and he is very young for a goalkeeper. He will hopefully be 1st choice keeper for the entire duration of this series.

View attachment 245782

Rudy is only the 2nd best centre mid at the club but is by far is most important. Salihovic is far better but is 29 and won't improve. If Rudy preforms well and keeps fit then his value will skyrocket as he develops. This will give me a great asset to sell for a lot of money in the 2nd season. Therefore Rudy is important to teh long term prospects of the club.

POSITIONS NEEDED

Young CB
1st choice LB
1st choice CAM

Throughout this series I will attempt to sign players with resale value and use the loan market wherever possible. Given I only have 2.2 million to spend I will have to be very shrewd and canny with any signings I make. These are the players I am targeting:

View attachment 245777
Kranjcar (loan)- Could come in and do a job for a season whilst I establish myself within the Bundesliga elite

View attachment 245776
Luis Alberto (loan)- Same logic as with Kranjcar but in my opinion is slightly better and more well rounded

View attachment 245775
Misimovic (Free)- Very old but has quality and could flourish for one season

View attachment 245774
Jesus Vallejo (transfer)- My main target, so much potential and good enough to be involved within the 1st team from the off

View attachment 245773
Oviedo (transfer/loan)- My primary LB choice. I am not yet sure whether he will be signed permanently or on loan but he is very well rounded

View attachment 245772
Stafylidis (loan)- I would love to sign him permanently but he will cost far too much. A loan deal for him would be the alternative to the signing of Oviedo

From now onward posts will be daily except on weekends. At weekends I will post one update on the Saturday.

TRANSFERS

As you can see through my earlier posts I was working on a shoestring budget with very little money. As a result I couldn't target the generic signings (Balanta, Romero) for any club as I simply lacked the funds. Instead I had to abuse the loan market a tad to find players who were good enough to play at a high level that didn't cost a fortune. Before I go into transfers I wanted to show you this:

View attachment 245565

This is the Hoffenheim 2nd team, ordered by potential ability by my assistant. As you can see somewhat surprisingly Hoffenheim seem to have a great many young players who could develop into something good. I was completely unaware of this when I picked Hoffenheim but this adds a really interesting, new aspect to the save. Most of the better youngsters have been sent on loan and I am trying to loan out a few more.

IN's

Jesus Vallejo

View attachment 245564 View attachment 245563

The main summer target was this lad and you can hopefully see why. With bigger clubs such as Arsenal, Real Madrid and Bayern circling I had to act fast to bring him in. I met his release clause of £1.1 million and within days he was signed up. Really happy with him and I hope he can go on to be the club's reliable CB for many years to come. A really good signing for the money I paid and at only 17 he looks a top prospect.

Luis Alberto

View attachment 245562 View attachment 245561

A necessary signing on loan. Alberto isn't going to set the world alight judging by his stats but he has decent stats in core areas (15 passing, 16 vision) so could do well in the hole behind Volland. Plus he's one of only 2 CAMs in teh squad. However I'm convinced there is probably better out there so I will search some more and hopefully sign someone else who's a bit better.
Bryan Oviedo

View attachment 245560 View attachment 245559

Again a loan signing but he will hopefully improve the LB department in the squad. Also we only had 1 LB anyway so I had to sign someone in that position and I thought it better to save £1-£1.5 million here so it could be spent in January or used to snap up a regen for a small fee.

What do you guys think? I'm reasonably happy with these transfers but I am still on the lookout for any deals that could present good value. In terms of sales I have had no offers whatsoever and I don't intend to sell. However a bid of £8+ million for Rudy would tempt me as I could find a better CM for less than that and we have 1 CM too many at the club anyway.

Note: I have still yet to show you a picture of the squad which I probably should have done by now :). I won't show you a picture until after deadline day as there may be more deals to come... PRESEASON
View attachment 245555
I forgot to put this in the main update so I'll put it here, sorry :). Preseason was relatively uneventful except for shock away losses to Wolfsberger and Mirandes. However I was experimenting a bit with the lineup and formation so I wasn't necessarily expecting domination but I was still disappointed. The Zenit home game was an opportunity for me to see how far we were from that kind of team and I was reassured by the competitive display that I saw even though we lost from a 91st Rondon screamer

A vs Darmstadt

The first game for Hoffenheim under my leadership was at home against the newly promoted Darmstadt in the German Cup. I fielded the 1st team in all areas except at the back, where I gave 17 year old Jesus Vallejo a debut. However this decision proved to be rather flawed when their 6ft7inch target man beat him in the air at the back post in the 11th minute. 1-0 Darmstadt, not a good start to my reign as manager. The game then petered out completely with no noteworthy highlights until the 79th minute. Substitute Adam Szalai dribbled past 2 defenders in one of the few moments of quality in the game and whipped a left footer curler at goal. Sadly it ricocheted off the bar and bounced safe.
There were no more chances then until deep into injury time. Niklas Sule won the header on halfway and played it into Alberto. Alberto swept it out into the path of Elyounoussi who was in acres of space. He beat his fullback, and crossed into Guilherme Biteco to stab home an unlikely equalizer which rebounded in off the keeper. Extra time came and went, leaving penalties. The first 2 were scored with ease before Gondorf the 26 year old Centre Mid smacked his directly down the throat of Baumann, missing. We kept calm scoring all their penalties before Yannick Stark shot high and wide to gift us the most undeserved of undeserved wins via the means of a penalty shootout. The next round of the draw gave us a winnable home game vs Koln which I was more than happy with.

H vs Frankfurt

Next up was a trip to the Commerzbank Arena to face Frankfurt. I made 2 changes dropping Rudy and Vallejo in an attempt to add much needed grit and experience to the side by bringing in Bickakic and Polanski. This worked until the 19th minute when an aimless, nothing cross by Right Back Makoto Hasabe was inexplicably diverted into his own goal by Bickakic. Things deteriorated dramatically though in the 31st minute when Eugen Polanski needlessly tripped Meier on the wing, resulting in a second yellow card. This suited Frankfurt down to the ground and they simply sat in from then on, the 2 banks of 4 impossible to break down.

H vs Werder Bremen

Smarting from the defeat I mixed things up once more against Werder Bremen who were missing 5 players through injury. Beck, Strobl, Szalai, Biteco the cup hero and Rudy all came into the lineup with Volland moving back to his more natural RW slot. The first real chance of the game came in the 22nd minute when good play by Rudy worked the ball into the feet of Biteco. He rolled it back for Szalai to hit first time but he was denied by a good save from Husic in the Werder Bermen net. Another chance then arrived in the 38th when an Oviedo corner was cleared to the edge of the box. Elyounoussi won the header and knocked it down for Volland who shown great composure to escape a sea of bodies before slamming home low and hard into the corner of the net from 10 yards. 1-0 Hoffenheim.
Clearly fired up by the goal Hoffenheim remerged for the 2nd half the better side. A Luis Alberto set piece was cleverly fired into Rudy at the near post. He controlled and stood up for Bickakic at the far stick for a free header. However somehow Bickakic contrived to nod against the crossbar in what will go down as one of the misses of the season. But Bickakic redeemed himself 20 minutes later, cleanly tackling the ball from the Werder Bremen forward Ujah when he was last man. But the play was recycled back to Ujah who bent home a right footed curler from 20 yards out. A magical equalizer but a hammer blow for Hoffenheim who were by far the better side. 1-1.
This was how the game was set to finish with the midfield congested and neither team playing well. However a floated freekick on the left flank from Jonathan Schmid was volleyed home at the near stick by Bickakic, completing his redemption for his recent poor form and winning me my 1st game as Hoffenheim manager.

Deadline Day
Free transfers

DEADLINE DAY

So Deadline Day, for some clubs a day of panic as they scramble to find last minute deals and replace their best players who suddenly decide to leave. For other clubs it's a very dull day in which not to much happens. For us I hoped it would be the latter after this happened earlier in the window.

View attachment 244954 View attachment 244953 View attachment 244952

Volland was tied down a long term deal, effectively showing Real the middle finger and we'd signed Mosquito- a talented youngster with a great name. In doing so we used up most of our available funds. However predictably I got an offer for Rudy, £10 million from Valencia. He had already said to me he wanted to leave to join them so I was powerless to stand in his way.

View attachment 244951

As a replacement I found this guy:

View attachment 244950

Ganso was costing me only £5 million which I thought was very strange, a player so good costing so little. Then when I went to confirm the transfer I found out why.

View attachment 244949

His stupid agent wanted £11.25 million. No thank you. So with little time left I had sold my staring CM and had no replacement- a problem. Then I went back onto the loan market and found a rather talented geezer that goes by the name of Óliver. 2 hours later he was a Hoffenheim player and I was happy.

View attachment 244948 View attachment 244947

Then the summer window slammed shut and I was left with this squad:

September

SEPTEMBER

View attachment 244409

Not an easy month of fixtures, we'll be lucky to get half of the available 12 points from these I thought going into the month.

H vs Dortmund

One of the biggest games of the season as first up for Hoffenheim in September as Dortmund visited the Rhein-Neckar Arena. Buoyed by the good result in the last game I made only 2 changes, new signing Óliver in for Biteco and Salihovic for Rudy. Reus’s injury in the international break gave the team a boost going into the massive match and a small chance of causing a unthinkable upset. The first Hoffenheim corner of the game was pumped into the near post in the 12th minute where Süle won the header but it whacked off the angle of post and bar. The rebound fell kindly for Óliver who could only hit the post with the goal at his mercy. However 4 minutes later the set piece paid off with Süle this time scoring his header from an identical situation. 1-0 Hoffenheim. However Dortmind kept coming with Baumann making a series of good saves, the best a reflex stop from 3 yards to keep out an Adrian Ramos effort. However they would go onto to equalizer in added time when a clever Sahin reverse ball found Mkhitaryan who fired past Baumann. 1-1 at half time.
Chances were few after half time with Schmid coming closest when he cracked a free kick from within the D against the woodwork. A free kick would result in Dortmund’s 2nd goal though. Sahin’s effort was poorly parried by Baumann straight to Ramos who simply cut back for the onrushing Groβkreutz. 2-1 Dortmund, perhaps slightly against the run of play. And that’s how the game ended with Dortmund’s superior class just shading it on the day. One of the biggest games of the season as first up for Hoffenheim in September as Dortmund visited the Rhein-Neckar Arena.

View attachment 244408

A vs Köln

Next up was a tricky away trip to Köln, who had held Dortmund to a respectable 0-0 in their previous home fixture. 4 changes were made with both fullbacks dropping out the side, Salihovic making way for Schwegler and Schmid earning a recall in place of Szalai. This was necessary squad rotation ahead of a huge game vs Monchengladbach midweek. But the changes worked as Schwegler found a piercing ball for the new LB Kim Jun-Su. Jin-Su then crossed low into Volland who could fire home making it 0-1 in the 22nd minute. However just after half time Osako resorted parity by palcing the ball past Baumann as the Köln LB found a beautiful ball over the top of the Hoffenheim backline, 1-1. But only seconds later Hentz the Köln CB lunged in 2 footed on Óliver, resulting in an early bath for the CB and reducing Köln to 10. The 11 men made the man advantage pay when a lack of numbers in midfield for Köln allowed Volland to win an easy free kick 20 yards from goal which Óliver dispatched past a helpless Timo Horn, 1-2. Hoffenheim then ran down the clock to earn a 1st away win of the season.

View attachment 244407

H vs Mochengladbach

After that came a winnable home fixture vs Gladbach in the first midweek game of the season. I changed the entire attackind midfield due to a mixture of fatigue and poor form as well as rotating Polanski in for Strobl. Biteco, Zuber and Schipplock came in for Óliver,Elyounoussi and Schmid. But Gladabch started the better and took the lead early on when a floaty free kick by Thorgan Hazard found Raffael on the penalty spot. Abysmal marking by Süle and Bickakic left him with acres of spaces free header which he took full advantage of, 0-1. Salihovic then came on at HT in an attempt to inject for oace and tempo in Hoffenheim’s play. And the change worked when 2 minutes after the interval Salihovic fired the ball into Zuber on the edge of the box out wide. He then controlled, came inside then played in Schipplock who thumped home to level things up. Salihovic then gave Hoffenheim a shock lead by firing home a free kick from 20 yards with only our 3rd shot on target all game! 2-1 but it was defintely undeserved. And that was how the game should have finished until Bickakic decided to mindlessly hack down Raffael in the 88th minute. Flip Daems dispatched the penalty and we were back level which is how the game finished.

View attachment 244406

A vs Bayern

For the toughest game of the season away to Bayern changes were made. The clueless Bickakic dropped out the matchday 18, Oviedo slotted in at LB and Óliver overcame muscle fatigue to start. But no CB couldd efend against Lewandowski’s class for the opener. He skinned both CM’s before faking to shoot at the near post then powering the ball past Baumann at the far post from the edge of the box. 1-0 Bayern and I was worried the good old “floodgate opening” lines were going to have to be rolled out. So when a Robben cross was completely misjudged by Abraham and Oviedo after Kaderabek allowed Robben a free run and Lewandowski headed in his second goal I was starting to get concerned. At HT a triple change with Szalai, Schwegler and Elyounoussi coming on. Nothing more of note happened for the rest of the game with Bayern sitting pretty and Hoffenheim not even mustering a shot on target and only 37% of the ball. Rubbish, absolute rubbish. They may be Bayern but I still expected competition and fight so this meek surrender made me question the seeming everpresents of the team.

New contract news....

OCTOBER
View attachment 244176

A much kinder set of fixtures this month- if we have any aspirations of European football then it should have been an 9 points from 9 in October.

A vs Mainz

After the tradegy of the Bayern game only Baumann, Óliver, Süle and Volland survived the cut to start vs Mainz. And the changes paid off when 11 minutes in Óliver found a wonderful side rule pass between the Mainz defenders to present Schmid with the easiest of easy tap ins to open his account for the season. The lead was then doubled by Schwegler in the 18th minute when the ball sat up for him on the edge of the box for the first time piledriver. He duly obliged, finishing into the roof of the net, making it 0-2. And it nearly stayed that way until Okazaki somehow beat Süle in the air and knocked the ball down for Sebastian Polter to finish past Baumann. The game came considerably easier after half time though when Zimling got a second yellow for tripping Volland in midfield. We then just sat on the lead thorughout the second half, showing little ambition to get a third goal but never looking in any danger of conceding and thus completed a straightforward away win.

View attachment 244175

H vs Augsburg

For the first time ever as Hoffenheim manager I made no changes to the starting XI with everyone fit and fresh following the international break. Augsburg had yet to score more than 1 goal in a match this season so I was confident I could outscore them and win comfortably. Sure enough we scored first, Volland played through Schmid who then returned the favour for Volland bisecting the CB’s with his cross, leaving Volland with a free header which he easily scored past Hitz in the Augsburg goal. HT then came and went with Augsburg emerging fired up. Only a fingertip save by Baumann at full stretch prevented Ji Dong-Won levelling the match up 3 minutes after the interval. We then extended our lead in bizarre circumstances when Kim Jin-Su the LB took a throw on the right flank. As he made his way back over to the left good interlinking play between Volland and Óliver meant the ball worked its way to him 12 yards out with plenty of room. Obviously surprised at his presence in the central striker role Hitz could only watch as Su fired home the 2nd goal. That was that, an easy win all things considered.

View attachment 244174

A vs Stuttgart

Back to back wins had catapulted us up to 7th in the table and I was very confident as we travelled to Stuttgart who had only lost 2 of their previous 9. The team once again bore no changes due to their recent good form. However they would score first through a cleverly worked set piece routine that allowed Martin Harnik to lose his marker and head home as we failed to react and anticipate the situation. However 6 minutes later Óliver, fast becoming a very good signing, volleyed home Jin-Su’s whipped cross after Schmid’s shot was saved into the full back’s path by Tyton in the Stuttgart goal. Then we scored again to take the lead, Niklas Süle popping up with what is fast becoming a trademark near post header from an Óliver corner. Then Stuttgart CB Alexander Niedermeier did us an enormous favour and picked up a second yellow for simulation, leaving Stuttgart with 10 men. 2-1 then became 3-1 as Óliver found himself in masses of space on the left. He took his time and dug out a pinpoint cross onto the head of Volland who did the rest. Stuttgart did have a consolation ruled out for offside but that was the only significant event after our 3rd goal in a really good win.

View attachment 244173

H vs Köln

I was genuinely delighted as the 3 consecutive wins had bumped us all the way into 4th place in the table but keen to ensure we didn’t lose momentum vs Köln in the German Cup. However rotation was not only fair but necessary meaning only the CBs and Óliver kept their places in the side with Alberto utilised in an unfamiliar wide right position. And the changes seemed to have little meaningful impact on the team as Salihovic opened the scoring with a free kick that completely wrong footed the keeper as a wicked deflection off the wall sent the ball the other way. The lead was doubled midway through the first half as Szalai finished Luis Alberto’s clever low cross past a helpless Timo Horn. However things took a turn for the worst 6 minutes before HT when Süle made an idiotic 2 footed hack on Anthony Modeste, resulting in a straight red. Then 4 minutes before the HT whistle sounded good play by Köln worked the ball into Gerdhardt who laid it off for Svento to finish, 2-1 but Hoffenheim were on the ropes. And sure enough Köln levelled in the 51st minute from a corner, Simon Zoller rising highest to head Köln level. The bombardment continued with Baumann making save after save, proving his mettle under pressure. But he could do nothing about the winner for…HOFFENHEIM!!! Salihovic popped up with another superb free kick 2 minutes before added time, cementing his place in the team for matches to come and making it Hoffenheim 3 Köln 2!!! And afterwards we drew bottom side Hamburg in the 3rd round of the cup- could this run continue?

View attachment 244172

In other news I tied Niklas Süle down to a long term contract, extending his deal through to 2019. My thinking behind this was that he is the only young, home-grown at club CB in the game for Hoffenheim and we would be mad to let him go. Also his recent preformances made me worried a side like Wolfsburg or Leverkusen could pounce unless we tied him down.

Great read and the team are looking good. Sitting pretty in third at the minute. Best of luck with the rest of the season.

NOVEMBER

View attachment 243950

A interesting set of fixtures. Given our current form all of them are winnable but the superior quality of Leverkusen, Schalke could see us on the end of a pummeling if we are too expansive.

H vs Hamburg

First up in the crucial month of November was bottom side Hamburg at the Rhein-Neckar Arena (now onwards known as the Neckar), our home stadium. Without a win in the Bundesliga and having only scored 1 in their last 7 they should have been easy pickings. They also have some handy players I may pinch if they do go down (Tah, Müller, Behrami). Our team was changed with regulars Volland and Schwegler returning as well as others. The first half was a bit of a non-event apart from a smart Adler save from a low Szalai effort that was headed for the bottom corner. The second half followed much the same pattern until in the 82nd minute Kaderabek whipped in a corner which was flicked on by Süle at the near post to Vallejo at the far post to head home and score his 1st ever Hoffenheim goal. Minutes later Volland grabbed a second after Biteco was hacked down in midfield when he sent Volland through 1v1. This rubbed salt into the wounds of Hamburg who had played well but were toothless up front. We had played poorly but had the vital win which sent us to 3rd in the table on goal difference.

forgot to save screenshot of this game, sorry :(

A vs Hertha

However the game was costly in terms of personnel. Süle pulled his groin and will miss 2-3 weeks whilst Biteco broke his ankle in the build up to the 2nd goal and won’t return to the 1st team squad until February 2015 at the earliest. Not wanting to overplay Vallejo (he’s only 1 year old than me and I couldn’t play as much football as he has recently!) I elected to rest him and give Mr Clueless/Bicakcic another chance alongside Abraham; Polanski came in for Schwegler in the only other change in what was a champions league 6 pointer away to Hertha Berlin.
The first significant action was in our half, Baumann tipping a Roy Beerens scorcher around the post and away from danger. However from the resulting corner the ball found its way to Kalou, who controlled then lashed home for Hertha. 8 minutes later the lead was doubled when Kalou was tackled just outside the 18 yard box and into enough space for Beerens to curl one past Baumann who could not deny him this time. We then conceded a third in awful circumstances as 3 quick passes by Hertha allowed then to penetrate from the halfway line to our 6 yard box where Kalou rifled into the roof of the net. Just 23 minutes in and we were 3-0 down and playing appallingly. Worse turned horrific as Baumjohann scored the 4th for Hertha as both our CBs were sucked to the ball, leaving him in acres of space. We did pull one back just after HT when substitute Schmid crossed into the box and the Hertha backline switched off to allow Óliver to sneak in at the front post and score. But the joy was shortlived as Kalou made it 5, beating Baumann at the near post after Allgui crossed it low into him. Eye opening….

View attachment 243949

And just to show how good Süle is, here's a screenshot of his stats. Absolutely crucial to this entire team.
View attachment 243948

H vs Schalke

Just the 6 changes for the upcoming home game vs Schalke which had newfound importance. I would have made more changes, heck I would have made 10 changes, but injury and fitness wouldn’t let me unfortunately. And my rather cross team talk at the beginning of the match paid off as 5 minutes in Volland opened the scoring, showing his electric pace to sprint through the middle of Schalke’s team and coolly slotting past Wetklo. But Meyer equalizer just 9 minutes later after a good through ball by Johannes Geis set him through and left him with a simple finish. HT came and went and Schalke emerged re-invigorated and refreshed. Their newfound energy had nothing to do with their 2nd goal though. Geis floated the corner to Barnetta who passed to Meyer who shot straight at Baumann. But the ball was parried right back to him and he finished at the 2nd time of asking. But we drew level soon after, Óliver finding Volland who dribbled past Matja Nastasic before shooting into the back of the net. And Volland completed his hattrick as Óliver played him through after good, composed play by Süle as he beat 2 before finding Óliver who in turn set Volland free. However a corner once again proved to be our undoing as Farfan stabbed home admidst several Hoffenheim bodies, 3-3. But the gutting Schalke winner came, predictably, from a free kick that rebounded off Baumann and straight to Meyer who calmly finished his rather rubbish hattrick.

A vs Leverskusen

So for the tough away game to end end the month- Leverkusen. Only a single change which was Zubber dropping out and Elyounoussi coming in (I’m quite proud of myself that I can actually spell that now without looking). And this proved to be a good choice as he opened the scoring when a Schmid free kick hit the bar and bounced down kindly for him to finish. And soon after HT Elyounoussi made it 0-2 with a good header, beating Jedvaj in the air and finishing Jin-Su’s cross with aplomb. Then he scored a thrid, powering home from inside the 6 yard box and by that point I was really really happy. Elyounoussi made the run from out to in and was found well by Volland who had evaded the CDM Kramer for the 1st time all game to pick the pass. And even better our previously not so watertight defence kept out Leverkusen all game, not allowing them a single noteworthy shot or chance . 0-3 and a really good 0-3 at that.

Sorry about forgetting to screenshot that Hamburg game, I play this ahead of time and screenshot things I need to post in the story along the way. Unfortunately it means I may miss bits like this from time to time and I can't go back and get them as my game doesn't store the fixtures that far back (I'm currently in 2016 I think) . All the match reports and stuff I type out right after games otherwise I won't remember :)

DECEMBER

View attachment 243715

Sitting pretty 7th in the table with a 3 point gap to nearest side Wolfsburg I was hoping the crunch month of December would be a positive one for us. Also knowing that we faced the 2 newly promoted sides within the month gave me confidence that we could easily keep ourselves in contention for European places.

H vs Ingolstadt

Ingolstadt were 1st up and without a win so far in the Bundesliga I was tempted to rotate, bearing in mind trickier games were to come. But I didn’t sticking with the XI then thrashed Leverkusen. And we took the lead 17 minutes in, a swift counterattack lead by Óliver who played through Volland who placed his shot past Özcan, 1-0 Hoffenheim. And the lead was doubled soon after by Schmid after some great one touch play by Óliver who fizzed it into Volland who then laid it on a plate for Schmid to pass into the empty net. Then yet another corner goal by Hoffenheim as Óliver’s driven ball into the box was won by Süle who knocked down for Elyounoussi who passed right for Volland to strike home. But then just before HT Ingolstadt scored from a cross. Lex, playing on the right of midfield crossed deep, so deep that it chipped Baumann and nestled in at the far post, making it 3-1. However Ingolstadt decided they didn’t want to make the game interesting, Robert Bauer getting 2 bookings in 2 minutes and getting himself sent off. This allowed us to switch to counter and sit in, as comfortable as you like. And as a result of this from 50 minutes on there were no highlights, giving us a regulation home win.

A vs Hannover

After that it was an away trip to Hannover that was next up. Bearing in mind we had a big match vs Wolfsburg just 3 days later I elected to rotate the squad with 5 changes being made from the Ingolstadt game. Maybe the rotation disrupted the rhythm of the team as little of note happened within the first half hour until a Kaderabek throw found Schmid who was blatantly tripped by Hoffmann, earning himself a penalty which was missed by Salihovic. I got the lads in at HT, told them they were rubbish then sent them back out there. Oh and I subbed off Salihovic. But we didn’t improve really, the second half highlights only being occasional Hannover potshots from range. We did score but Schipplock’s goal was ruled out for offside. And so it finished 0-0 in a pretty poor match.

H vs Wolfsburg

For the Wolfsburg match in midweek at the Neckar I reverted to the winning lineup we played vs Ingolstadt except for Süle who had a 1 match ban due to accumulating 5 yellow cards, who was replaced by Bicakcic. But predictably this had no effect with the only meaningful action a Max Kruse goal that was disallowed for offside. And eventually our boring football cost us the opener, Arnold playing through Dost who slotted home. But we did eventually score in the 80th minute! In our first attacking move for 170 minutes Elyounoussi lead a quick counterattack, played the ball to Volland out wide who then cut inside, beat 3 and finished past Bengalio- 1-1! But of course we had to muck up, allowing Dost far too much room on the edge of the box. He wriggled away from both CBs then shot past Baumann. 2-1 Wolfsburg and I wasn’t pleased as it showed us how much our defence revolved around Süle.

A vs Darmstadt

A win was defintely needed vs Darmstadt to send the team into the winter break with a positive vibe. Bicakcic made way for Süle in our only change. The first half was one again disturbingly dull, with not one actual highlight. HT allowed me to make changes, Zuber coming on for Elyounoussi. And Zuber proved his worth, shooting home from the just inside the box after making space for the shot with some really composed play. However the goalkeeper was to blame, the ball going in between his hands as he attempted to save. Zuber was also doing good in defence, tracking back to mop up a Darmstadt attack and start another attack for Hoffeheim. This resulted in a wonderful team move and culmilated in a thunderous strike by Óliver that was superbly saved after he nutmegged the defender in the buildup. Zuber then made it 0-2, finishing another Óliver from 15 yards past the hopeless Darmstadt keeper at the near post.

Then the board decided to give me a new contract due the fact it expires in 6 months. Also we have been playing very well so I think I deserve the contract.

3 Bundesliga games
January- Big signing...

JANUARY

So January rolled into town with Hoffenheim looking to offload Szalai and sign a new striker who could share the goalscoring burden with Volland. No one else had more than 3 goals in the rest of the squad and Volland had 11, a good total but in need of more goalscoring help as demonstrated by our previous 3 games. And Jiménez was that signing for just £4.7 million meaning the net cost of the transfer was just £1.8 million as we did sell Szalai for £.29 million to FC Nantes. Very very happy with the signing and the low net spend. Jiménez is champions league quality in my opinion and I'm delighted to get him in.

Then Salihovic started whining that I had made no signings pretty much the day after I had signed Jiménez that I needed to make signings. Makes sense, a lot of sense

H vs Frankfurt

Jiménez did start vs Frankfurt, in a game I was desperate to win. Ahead of us in the table on goal difference, a win would be a massive boost for the team. And we started well, Elyounoussi squirming past 2 challenges, faking a shot before passing to Óliver, and there was nothing fake about his powerful effort that put us 1-0 up. But some quick passing in and around the box left Jiménez with a free shot on goal, which he cracked off the post. After HT we came out and showed great energy and intent, fizzing the ball about and stretching the Frankfurt back line. Óliver received the ball in a pocket of space, played it out wide for Volland who then cut inside and shot into the back of the net, 2-0! And we kept up the pressure, peppering Trapp with shots which, to his credit, he saved well. This game was a very good indication of our progression, we played great football throughout and never looked in danger. Rewind 5 months and we couldn’t buy a goal vs Frankfurt with 11 or 10 men.

A vs Werder Bremen

For my next game away to Werder Bremen I made 2 changes, due to fatigue and suspension. Polanski and Elyounoussi dropping out for Strobl and Zuber. Bremen opened the scoring, Di Santo knocking down for Aycicek who passed to Petersen. Petersen controlled then smashed the ball into the roof of the net. 1 then became 2 Hilβner playing a great ball through for Petersen to score his 2nd goal. But only seconds later we pulled one back, Schwegler hitting a glorious 30 yard pass to Volland who took his time and powered the ball into the back of the net. But we then conceded from a swift counterattack, Bremen going from the edge of their box to the edge of ours in 10 seconds- Phillip Bargfrede finishing. And then somehow l a 4th goal for Werder Bremen happened, our entire team undone by some slick passing football that was finished off by Bargfrede. 4-1 and I was angry. The 5th goal made puzzled, very puzzled. The LB threw the ball into Petersen who laid it off to the edge of the box for Hilβner to finish. Wow and it was only HT.
A triple change at half time- Volland, Óliver and Jiménez off. I was giving them much needed rest ahead the congested fixture list that was coming up. And nothing happened in the second half, NOTHING. So it finished 5-1 and I was determined to find out why we had been beat by 5 twice this season.

A vs Dortmund

For the upcoming Dortmund away game I didn’t rotate at all wanting to give the players a chance to redeem themselves, except to replace the injured Bicakcic with Polanski, Strobl dropping down to CB. And my decision paid dividends, Jiménez opening his account for Hoffenheim by heading home a good Volland cross. 0-1 and I was chuffed. Our defence then held relatively firm against the Dortmund goal siege that followed, Baumann only having to make a couple of saves. But inevitably they scored, Mkhitaryan slotting past Baumann after Immobile’s clever layoff played him in. I then decided to play for the point and tweaked the system, Óliver dropping back and becoming part of a midfield 3. It worked, overloading the midfield and earning us a deserved point.

H vs Köln

Into February and into the most eventful month yet Hoffenheim went and I was not really overly optimistic. Bayern would be a loss and Gladbach away screamed 5-1 loss to me. But first was Köln which was not too bad. I kept faith with the XI that got a point at Dortmund and dropping Salihovic from the matchday 18 as he was whining about my lack of signings *sigh*. And I do hope he was watching when in the 40th minute new signing Jiménez finished an excellent passage of play with Óliver playing one 2’s with Volland then Beck before slipping in Jiménez for a regulation side foot finish. Then shortly after HT Köln won the ball on halfway, lumped it over the top for Gerhardt to run onto and he shot just over when he should have at least hit the target. I switched to counter and tightened everything up in an attempt to grind out the win. But it still left us with a great counterattacking threat, Schmid going close in added time from a counterattack.

A vs Gladbach

I was very apprenhensive for the upcoming away game vs Gladbach. The stars seemed to be aligning in their favour, Süle ruled out with concussion and Vallejo still not back fit. So only 1 change was made, Bicakcic returning from injury himself and barely fit to start (83% condition). And I was right to be neverous, Gladbach raining shots down on our goal but Baumann stood tall and saved all that came his way. Soon enough they did score, Fabian Johnson’s long throw flicked on by Hermann and the ball fell kindly for Drmic to smash the ball past Baumann. We nearly drew level, Elyounoussi hiiting the post then Volland’s effort was blocked on the line. Gladach then came forward in the 85th minute, Baumann saving well off Raffael. But it finished 1-0 to Gladabch at Borussia Park, but we were missing both 1st choice CBs and Salihovic who has been exiled from the 1st team setup so I wasn’t suprised.

Then it was the ugly one- Bayern at home.- F***. This was the last thing we needed as I wanted to revivie the momentum that had somewhat disspiated. Elyounoussi started along with a returning Süle and Vallejo. The top 4 was slipping out of our grasp but a Europa League place that would bring much needed cash to aid our sorry financial state was definitely a realistic target. But if Bayern whacked us then even that could start to become difficult. Then Volland decided to do this:

View attachment 242497 View attachment 242496 View attachment 242495

This put me in a horrendous position- sell him and I get about £1 million due to the board beinging so very stingy. Keep him and he will hate me, potentially leading to the sack. The best idea may be some form of swap deal that I’ll have to conjure up.

H vs Bayern

We actually started well vs Bayern as they didn’t have a highlight in the first 30 minutes, Süle and Vallejo preforming much better than the Strobl-Bicakcic partnership. Lewandoski had the first meaningful shot of the game 6 minutes before half time, tesing Baumann at the near post after being sent through by Xabi Alonso. I got the lads in at 0-0 and took off the ineffective Volland for Schmid to inject more pace into the side. Baumann was doing his best superhero impression making worldie saves from Thiago’s volley and Lewandoski’s fierce driven effort. But then something rather unexpected happen- we scored. Oviedo placed a free kick right onto Vallejo’s head and heeasily beat Benatia in the air to head home- 1-0!! Müller thought he had levelled things up when he scuffed an effort past Baumann but the linesmen did his job and raised his flag. Then Kaderbeck took a throw, found Schmid who passed to ZUBER!!! 2-0 Hoffenheim as he smashed the ball past Neuer who was helpless. And that completed one of the most memorable games of the season for Hoffenheim.

My thinking with selling Salihovic is this- he’s only going to get worse and his contract expired next summer. If I was going to give him a new deal, which I’m not sure he warrants, the wage he would want would be too high given our financial state. I’m not going to be able to get any more money than that for him and it frees up money on wages and may help the financial situation a tad.

H vs Mainz

But we had 1 more game in February vs Mainz at the Neckar. I made 2 changes- Volland and Polanski rotating out for Strobl and Schmid. And predictably nothing happened in the first half. But we did nearly open the scoring when Óliver failed to finish a 3 on 1 counterattack from a Mainz corner. Then Mainz flotaed a free kick into our box, Noveski volleyed at goal, Baumann parried straight to Stefan Bell who tapped in, 0-1 Mainz. And that is unfortunately how it finished. Perhaps the most boring, dull FM game ever.
