Update gone missing?

My FM started to crash on start up (crash dumps before the menu screen) so I reinstalled football manager no problem works fine.

Go to start a new game and although on the menu screen it says 14.2.1

When I Start New Career --> Football Manager, the database option is only Default (14.0.0). I have tried restarting Steam but nothing seems to happen and I can't find an option which I seem to remember in FM13 to check for the latest version.

you do realise the patch patches the game and not the editor data, right? so the 14.0.0 default is fine.. so it is your second answer "being an idiot"

the game version and data version are fine.

I am clearly an idiot, for some reason I seem to remember selecting on 13 from 13.1, 13.2, 13.3 etc but thinking about it your right.

Back into my little corner I better go!
