Has anyone had success using a target man in formations?

I've been playing with a 4-4-2 and a 4-2-3-1 and trying to utilize one to centralize my attack.

My question is, it is best to use counter and one route with crosses aimed at the target man, or better to be more fluid and control/attack?

I'm guessing with the back four I should use supporting WBs with a deeper line, then IF's up top and a DM/BBM/AP in the midfield.

Then with a 4-4-2 would you play with midfield wingers and pair the target man with a poacher?

The only way i personally get a use out of the target man is by playing him as support with two inside forwards.

I use CWB, with wingers at AMR/AML, cross targeting TM, with the TM on Attack, with an AM behind him on Support. Both my TM bang in more than 20 goals each season, and they share games equally, btw.

LLM's 442, was working well for me with Target man support and a poacher/adv. fw.

I had Jon Daly and Adam Campball, banging them in at Rangers.

You just use a straight AM/S behind him?

Yup. Wingers at AML/AMR provide more than enough cover I need, plus TM is on Attack, not Support. ofc, there are 2 CM, a BWM and a CM who are the mainstay.

I usually prefer attacking football, keeping it on the ground but I still use a Target man even with IFs because he provides a different way of attacking in my front line, I have a BPD and a CM with plays long range passes PPM so they usually launch a high ball for him to catch on, sometimes pass on to running IFs and so on. I currently have Mandzukic (not the best one in the game, I know) but he's scoring and assisting.

With a creative midfield i like to use a Target Man in combination with an AF and on the AMC position an Trequarasitsa (how the **** do you spell this). From the wings only WB (attack duty) to support the attack. 3 central midfielders: BBM, DLP (d), BWM (s).
That went pretty well for me, lots of goals :) Very fluid and attacking mentality.

Attacking route one. Have him on support with an attacking midfielder with attack duty behind him in a 4-4-1-1. Just won promotion with Mansfield and two of my target men finished the season with 13 and 17 goals whilst my attacking midfielder ended up on 15. Also worth playing a box 2 box in one of the 2 CM slots.
