Hi guys, this is my second tactic emulation, it's Vincent Kompany's incredible attacking tactic, a 4-2-3-1 that in possession becomes a 2-4-4 with only the two central defenders in a deeper position.
VINCENT KOMPANY'S BAYERN MUNICH 2024-25 IN FOOTBALL MANAGER 2024
To replicate Vincent Kompany’s tactics on Football Manager 2024, one must consider several unique characteristics of the German team's gameplay.
As observed in the tactical analysis, Bayern lines up in possession with an extremely offensive formation: a 2-4-4. The two fullbacks are neither inverted fullbacks (who position themselves centrally, acting as additional midfielders) nor wing-backs or complete wing-backs maintaining the width, as the width is primarily provided by the wingers. In the offensive phase, the fullbacks (Boey or Stanisic on the right and Davies on the left) push into spaces near the wingers. When the wingers cut inside, the fullbacks stay wider. Conversely, in the defensive phase, the fullbacks tuck inside to support the center-backs, ensuring numerical superiority in central areas during the build-up.
In Football Manager, it is not possible to fully replicate the fullbacks' positioning—narrow in defense and wide in attack—using either the inverted wing-back role (too central in both phases) or the complete wing-back role (too wide and advanced). The most suitable role for replicating their movements in both defense and attack is the standard fullback role.
This limitation remains until Sports Interactive allows players to create separate tactics for possession (attack) and non-possession (defense) phases, enabling different positional behaviors during the same match.

- Forwards dropping deep: Kompany’s system requires two forwards—Kane, the central striker, and Müller (or Musiala), the attacking midfielder—to drop deep into midfield. On FM, I assigned Kane the Complete Forward (Support) role and Müller/Musiala the Attacking Midfielder (Support) role.

Neuer; Boey (Stanisic), Upamecano, Kim Min-Jae, Davies; Kimmich (Pavlovic), Goretzka (Palinha); Coman (Olise), Müller (Musiala), Sané (Gnabry); Kane.
Mentality:
- Positive: Dictates the tempo without overexposing the defense, given the already offensive nature of the setup. Against much weaker teams, a more aggressive Attacking mentality can be used. Adjust roles such as the fullbacks, attacking midfielder, and forward accordingly.
- Width: Wide to fully exploit the field using wingers and overlapping fullbacks.
- Build-up play: Short passes from defense, focusing on the central areas. Bayern achieves numerical superiority in central zones, ensuring smooth ball progression under pressure. If opponents press with greater numbers, forwards Kane and Müller drop deeper to maintain midfield dominance.
- Exploit space: Continuous player movement creates opportunities between the lines, with the Pass Into Space instruction encouraging vertical, incisive passes.
In Transition:
- When possession is lost: Immediate high pressing to regain the ball quickly in the opposition’s half (Counter-Press).
- When possession is won: Launch fast counterattacks from dangerous areas (Counter).
- Goalkeeper instructions: Neuer plays as a Sweeper Keeper (Attack), capable of distributing short to the center-backs or launching long balls depending on the situation.
Out of Possession:
Kompany employs a high-pressing, gegenpress style, with attackers as the first line of defense. The defensive line is pushed high to maintain compactness and force opponents wide, limiting their passing and dribbling options. Key instructions include:
- Much higher defensive line, high pressing line.
- Much more urgent pressing.
- Force opposition wide, prevent short GK distribution.
