This is my first story, been wanting to do one for a while, hope you guys like any feedback and advice would be great!

CHAPTER 1 – Last Kick

“And this now must be the last kick of his career, how fortunate for Tony Richards, to get the chance to put his team two up on the final day of the season, on what he claims to be his final match ever”

“It’s what stories are made of... now Richards steps up... GOAL... and there was no doubt that he wasn’t going to score that penalty, sent the keeper totally the wrong way.”

“And there you have it, the final whistle, Exeter City 3 Wycombe Wanderers 1. The main feature of the game was Exeter’s veteran journeyman, Tony Richards, scoring a penalty with his last kick of his career.”

Wow what a feeling, I can’t believe all these people are clapping me; it’s been far too long since I have felt that. Oh here comes, wondered when he would want to get in on the action...

“Congratulations Tony” this was my manager, Paul Tisdale, speaking. Loved being surrounded by media and definitely thought of himself as far too big for Exeter City, but never admitted it.

I was feeling such a mix of emotions in one sense I was overwhelmed with amount of support we had out today and on the other hand I was absolutely knackered and couldn’t wait to sit down.

With Paul’s arm wrapped around my neck, not in a comfortable ‘well done’ sort of way, but more of a head-lock powerful way, we made our way off the pitch and down the tunnel. While walking down the tunnel, filled with sounds of metal studs stamping ahead with the faint noise of crowd still singing, I heard a voice, speak out to me...

“Now then Tony, about time you started scoring again” it was a voice I recognised straight away.

“John Wilkinson, how the **** are you?” It was my lifelong friend and ex-team mate. We had played together at Exeter and grew up together just down the road from each other.

CHAPTER 2 – Catch-Up

After getting changed showered and all the rest of it I met up with John in the players’ lounge. I hadn’t seen John for nearly 3 years, he played over in Singapore and there season ran at different times to our English leagues. It was brilliant to see him; he was back visiting family as he had recently injured his knee, always had dodgy knees, and was out for a month. We talked for what seemed to be minutes, until one of us finally looked at our watches and realised that it had been more like hours...

“Anyway you going to come and stay with me in Singapore and take that well deserved holiday” John said.

I thought to myself is Singapore somewhere I would really wanted to visit, I had always been a Spain kind of person. I was single though and had always wanted to travel the world and I have the time to do it now.

“Yeah, go on then, let’s see what this little place is about then” I told John

CHAPTER 3 - Holiday

I had spent a good 3 weeks in Singapore and to be honest, I am loving it. I was now on my way to the Choa Chu Kang Stadium, home of the Singapore Armed Forces Football Club (SAFFC), to watch John play. I was very excited to see what the football was like out here. I had heard a lot of good things from John, he did however say that the standard isn’t as great, but the passion of the fans does however make up for that.

It turned out to be a great game, with SAFFC winning 2-0 against Airbex Niigata Unicorn, and John managing to get himself on the score sheet. I decided I would go and get another Tiger beer, a beverage which I had found to be quite fond of since I came here. I was at the bar, ordering in English as that is one of the national languages of Singapore, when I felt a tap on the shoulder. I turned around expecting to see John, but instead there was a small Singaporean gentleman, perhaps around the age mark of late 50’s I guessed.

“You enjoy the game Mr. Richards?” said the gentleman. I thought to myself how does this man know my name, yes I was a professional footballer and I did have a couple of international caps, but not one of continental reputation, well so I thought as I had never really been one for getting recognised abroad.

“It was good, very exciting” I said. The gentleman smiled and went on to ask why I was here, was I enjoying myself and other such polite questions. When I finally got a chance to ask him about him, John turned and looked rather bemused that I was talking to this gentleman.

“Hello Mr. Hong” said John. Turns out the gentleman I was speaking to was Kuok Khoon Hong, the Chairman of Wilmar International and one of the richest men in Singapore. Me and John stayed and talked with Mr. Hong and why he was at today’s game. Mr. Hong went on to explain that Niigata Unicorn, the Japanese team who John had just played against were pulling out of the S-League and the opportunity has arisen for Mr. Hong to enter a team into the S-League replacing and he wanted to know if John wanted to be involved with the club both as a manager and as a player as his current contract with SAFFC ends at the end of the season. Needless to say John was a little overwhelmed, and looked honoured but went onto say that he wasn’t ready to go into management yet and just wanted to concentrate on playing and then said something totally unexpected...

“However if you were to hire Tony here, as the manager, I would find it very difficult to refuse a playing contract for your club. I mean you have done all coaching badges Tony rite?”

I couldn’t believe what I had just heard, I wasn’t ready for management, yeah I had thought of it, but didn’t expect to be looking for a job for a couple of years yet, let alone having John apply for them on my behalf.

John was still going on ... “he is more qualified than me, and has no ties or reasons to really stay in England” I thought thanks alot, make me out to be an absolute loner why don’t you, John. To my surprise though Mr. Hong seemed to be agreeing with John and looked at me and said...

“Is this something you would be interested in Mr. Richards?”

nice start, exactly the sort of story that I like to read. I'll try to follow mate

nice idea... following.

follow my story, Southampton - Back To The Top And Further!

just comment that your following... thanks

Cheers Mate, i wanted to do one after reading The Bulgarian Journeyman and a couple of others, always had an idea for this one, any suggestions?

Just with lower league stories, I think you have to try to develop a relationship with the reader and your players, because they will not know who they are. And try not to let your writing standards slip - looking good so far

CHAPTER 4 – The Offer

On the way back to John’s house, I and John were discussing what had just happened. The whole way home though I was thinking is this something I really want to do, am I ready for management? Do I have what it takes to be a successful leader? John must have seen something was going through my mind, because as he pulled into his drive, he turned off his engine and let the keys just dangle still in the ignition and let out a sigh and turned to me and said...

“What is bothering you mate?”

“I’m not ready to be a manager yet!” I replied

John looked at me and replied “Your probably one of the most qualified men for the job in Singapore right now, you are an ex-England international, you have captained many a side including West Ham, Coventry and Norwich, you have all your coaching badges, it’s not about being ready because deep down you know you are... this is about you not believing in your own ability, and quite frankly I have seen this before from you. This is exactly the reason you didn’t gain more caps for England, because you never believed you were good enough no matter what anybody said. Now this is a great opportunity for you and if you get the chance you should definitely take it.”

I just looked sorry for myself and never said anything, but I could tell from John’s reaction that he knew he had made me think hard about this decision.

“Now come on, you haven’t even been offered the job officially yet, so let’s not worry about this anymore and let’s go and get some food.” John said as he pulled the keys out of ignition and opened the door.

I woke the next morning in the beige decorated guest room in which I had been staying in and looked outside. Another beautiful day I thought as I heard the birds singing, then I heard footsteps coming down the hallway and the faint sound of John speaking. I immediately thought who is he speaking to his wife was at work and nobody else should be in. John then knocked on the door and came in smiling, pointing to his phone in his other hand and miming the name ‘Mister Hong’. I shot out of the bed like I had just realised I was laying in a bed of spiders, and grabbed the phone off him, and immediately put my hand over the receiver, paused and just thought “****”

“I’ll leave you to it” John said as he left the room

I took a deep breath and took my hand off the receiver... “Hello”

“Hello Mr. Richards, how are you this morning?” Mr. Hong said

“Good, thanks and you?”

“Yeah” he said completely ignoring the obvious small talk I was trying to instigate “I was thinking about our little talk yesterday, and I would really like to get the ball rolling in this club, and would like to formally offer you the position of Manager at Jurong FC

CHAPTER 5 – Jurong FC

“Well?” John said as I came walking out of the bedroom, he was in the modern styled kitchen situated next to the guest bedroom which I had been staying in, “spill?” I hadn’t spoken yet, and he was just glaring at me waiting for my response...

“I... I...” I cleared my throat then said with a bit more enthusiasm “I am the new manager of Jurong”

“Aar man, excellent” John said jubilantly

“Well, just need to go over figures, contracts etc. but I’m not really bothered by that stuff but he said the job is mine” I replied with a sense of confidence in my voice.

“Fantastic, well where do I sign then gaffer?” John said jokingly.

***

Later that day I travelled to the Jurong Stadium. The Jurong stadium was a multi-purpose stadium, with a capacity of 6,000, used mostly for football matches and was the home stadium of Singapore Armed Forces FC before they moved to the Choa Chu Kang Stadium and was to be the home venue of Jurong FC for the new S-League season.

I was due to meet up with Mr. Hong and the rest of the Jurong FC staff he has hired, and to be honest I was rather nervous, what were these other people going to think of me?

I walked into a conference room, which had a large mahogany table situated in the centre of the room, which had seated at it 7 people including Mr. Hong.

“Oh here you are Mr. Richards, come in sit down and let me introduce you to your staff...” Mr. Hong said

The first person he introduced was sat to the right of him, as he sat at head of the table looking very powerful, was Robert Lim. Lim was previously at The Vissai Ninh Binh's of the Vietnamese League. Mr. Lim had spent 7 months working as Ninh Binh's director of the youth team before being head coach.

“Mr. Lim will be your Assistant Manager, and has plenty of experience and knowledge of Singaporean football” said Mr. Hong.

I thought to myself, as I nodded at the late 50’s gentleman, this guy is ten times more experienced than me, why didn’t he get the job, but as it turns out Lim didn’t want to be in charge of a football club anymore and just wanted to help out.

The next person introduced to me, sat to the right of Lim, was a gentleman who looked in his early 40’s and of Singaporean nationality. This man was Vedhamathu Kanakarajan and was to be my first team coach. Next to him was a mid 40’s gentleman with a hefty moustache which covered his whole upper lip, this man was my goalkeeping coach, Murugayan Elangovan. Opposite from Elangovan was a young looking fresh faced gentleman, Nasruldin Baharuddin, my fitness coach. To the left of Baharuddin was an intellectual looking gentleman, dressed very smartly with a briefcase placed in front of him, as though he had just come from a meeting. This gentleman was Thomas Pang, and he had in fact just come from Jurong Hospital where he also worked as physiotherapist.

“Last but not least, this stern looking gentleman sat to my left is Mr. Razif Onn” said Hong

My god he wasn’t lying he was looking at me with the foulest of stares. Onn was a former coach at Singapore Armed Forces and was brought to the club under the condition that if the club couldn’t find a suitable manager that he would take over the reins. As I have come to the club this meant that Mr. Onn would be the Prime League Team Manager, which is pretty much the Singaporean version of the reserves team, and he did not look happy about it.

“Congratulations, on your tremendous good luck Mr. Richards” Onn said in the most sarcastic of voices.

It looked as though I was going to get a hard time from this Razif Onn; I better keep my eye on him. As for the other members of staff they all seemed very genuine and I looked forward to working with them.

CHAPTER 6 – The Introduction

As I strolled into the Jurong Stadium reception, I was greeted by the lovely smiling face of, 61 year old, Mrs. Fadhil.

“Good Morning, Mr. Richards” she said

Now Mrs. Fadhil was not your classical good looking early 20’s slim receptionist you come to think would work at a football clubs reception, but what she lacked in youth, she more than made up for in character and enthusiasm.

“Good Morning, Mrs Fadhil” I replied

“Mrs. Fadhil, Oh please call me Fan” Mrs. Fadhil said in an amused voice.

“You make me feel so old” she continued.

“Well then Fan, I will not have you calling me Mr. Richards, Tony please from now on” I replied.

We shared a laugh, and then I carried on my walk to my new office. I walked down the bland coloured corridors and thought to myself for a team whose colours are orange and purple and sport a large cobra as there emblem, these walk ways were considerable less as what to be desired.

I reached the door of my office and there written on a silver plaque was ‘Mr. Tony Richards’. I thought to myself “Manager, me, ****** ****” and then let out a small chuckle. As I opened the door to my office the first thing I noticed was that my view was that of the pitch, this felt more like a luxury game box. I had a desk, with a computer on it, slightly old computer, but a computer none the less. Hanging on the wall was the Jurong FC club logo, just the piercing eyes of the cobra looking back at me. A little daunting but sure I’ll cope. As I sat down in my leather chair, which was situated a little bit too far from the desk for my liking, there was a knock on the door. It shocked me, and made me jump a little.

“Come In” I shouted

In walked Robert Lim, my assistant manager.

“Good Morning, Mr. Richards” he said

“Please, call me Tony” I Replied

“Ok, you ready Tony” smiling at me with his red Singapore baseball cap, as he said

“Ready... ready for what?” I said in a confused manner

“To introduce you to the players, and have a little talk with me about where the guys are up to, and who I recommend playing” Lim replied

“Oh yeah, of course” I said, in the least confident of voices.

As me and Robert were walking towards the training pitch, situated next to the ground, enclosed by a metal fence, I started to get a major case of the butterflies. All sorts of thoughts started to run through my head.

“Will they listen to me?”

“Do they think I am the rite man for the job?”

“Will they all just hand in transfer requests, as soon as they can?”

I didn’t have much time to answer my own question as before I knew it, I was stood in front of a group of 22 men. I stood there for a second thinking what to say, as they all glared at me, from there sitting positions on the grass.

“Hello... I’m Mr. Richards, but you can all call me Tony” a couple nodded, not much reaction. Another thought ran through my head “can they call me Tony, is that a good thing, oh ****” I continued to introduce myself, starting very slowly with basic introductions you would at a dinner party, but then I started to get into the groove of things, and followed with my experience, what I expect from them, what they can expect from me etc. All in all I think it went quite well.

I finished with ‘Ok boys, I will now pass you onto Razif for your training this morning’

“Mr. Onn” Razif snapped and then he proceeded to stare at me, as though we were in a blinking contest, I used to do as a child.

“Mr. Onn, sorry” I replied in an apologetic manner.

***

Sat in the stands of the training ground, which could only have a capacity of 200 people maximum, was me and Robert.

“Okay, where do I start then, rite are the basics you need to know about Singaporean football in case you don’t know” Robert Said

“Singaporean clubs can have no more than 6 foreign players in there squad and that includes the Prime League squad also. Only 4 can be in a match day squad and you must have no more than 7 substitutes. You follow?

“Yes, straight forward” I replied enthusiastically

“You have been given a transfer budget of 500,000 Singapore Dollars (S$) and a wage budget of S$35,000 of which we are currently spending S$18,000” He continued

“Okay I personally don’t think you will need to use much of that as I think we have a fairly good side out there but we could do with maybe one or two players” He said in a polite manner

I thought to myself, I always thought of myself as a Manager who wouldn’t buy lots of players to play single positions, but more of the idea I would have players who can play a variety of positions as I would prefer a manageable sized squad, of whom I have given time to gel.

Robert further went onto describe the players to me in detail, who was best, who was a leader, my set-piece specialist, and it was a lot to take in. The players which stood out to me the most were my two foreign players.

View attachment 117750

Firstly was Anawin Jujeen from Thailand, recently signed from Bangkok Glass and a member of Thai national side, he is a skilful winger with lots of pace who can also play as a central midfielder. Versatility I like that.

View attachment 117752

Secondly was Kegne Ludovick, a native of Cameroon, a powerful striker who reminded me of a younger Patrick Mboma. Kegne was a well known name in the S-league previously playing for Balestier Khalstra and Home United, with a host of goals next to his name.

View attachment 117757

Robert pointed out John as one of key players and that he possessed good leadership skills, even though I always had it in my mind that he would be my captain.

View attachment 117753

Another player who caught my eye was Peres Oliveira a Brazilian who had gained Singaporean nationality from playing in the S-League for over 10 years! He was a veteran of S-League and well respected by his peers. He plays in the attacking central midfield role which would be of great use to me.

View attachment 117749 Afiq Yunos
View attachment 117754Abdil Qaiyyim
View attachment 117751Hafiz Abu Sujad

The other 3 players who really stood out to me were 3 Singaporean youngsters all of whom have youth caps. Afiq Yunos, Abdil Qaiyyim and Hafiz Abu Sujad were their names. Yunos and Qaiyyim were both tall centre backs and to be honest looked the handiest out of my choice of central defenders. Maybe they were too young though to both be starting though? That is something I will have to look into. Robert described Sujad as “Singapore’s answer to Jack Wilshere” I laughed when he did so, but the boy was good, he needed a little work but he definitely had something.

After looking at all the players and weighing up all the options, I decided that I wouldn’t need that many new signings and sent, newly signed scout, Abdul Latiff Abdullah searching around Singapore for an experienced central defender, a versatile defensive midfielder and an attacking minded central midfielder.

Story is coming along nicely, liked the round up of your players, even though i haven't a clue who they are. Keep it going.

Singapore! You'll be going wtf when you find out the top scorer almost every year is a 40-year old Serb.
