I've chosen to start this game as West Brom, with the board expectation of a mid-table finish. I was given a ?1.8m transfer budget, and adjusted my wage budget to give me ?2.3m for transfers.

I had a look through my squad, and, along with scouting and assistant advice, identified the right-back position as a weakness, and subsequently identified Kyle Naughton as a potential solution to that problem.

Kyle Naughton - Tottenham - ?2.3million bid placed

Following on from this, I further analysed my squad, and got rid of anyone with under a 2-3* potential, and identified potential future stars for each position.

Goalkeepers
First Choice: Ben Foster (30)
Substitute: Boaz Myhill (30)
Youth: Alex Palmer (15)
Alex Palmer isn't the greatest prospect, with only potential of Championship, but all other options were under 1* potential, and were in turn let go in order to cut my wage bill. With both 1st team goalkeepers over 30, it's a position which will require investment fairly soon, and as a priority.

Defenders (Central)
First Choice: Jonas Olsson (30)/Diego Lugano (32)
Substitute: Craig Dawson (23)
Youth: Donveron Daniels (19)
Donveron Daniels is a real prospect for the future, rated by my team at 3.5* (good Premier Division), which is the best from the crop of youngsters we had at this position...In terms of the other 3 listed above, they will be rotated, due to the age of Olsson and Lugano, and the potential of Craig Dawson

Defenders (Right)First Choice: Billy Jones (26)
Substitute: Steven Reid (32)
Youth: N/A
At the moment, I only have two right backs: Billy Jones is rated as 3* ability, which is sufficient for now, but his backup is only 2.5* rating, and i'm not comfortable with how thin that cover is, as i rely on my fullbacks with the way i play. As such, i bid for Kyle Naughton, and hopefully he'll be persuaded to come to us.

Defenders (Left)
First Choice: Goran Popov (28)
Substitute: Liam Ridgewell (28)
Youth: Bradley Garnston (19)
Again, the options here aren't great, with both 1st team options at 2.5*, and Bradley rated as 2* potential. Again, it's an area which will require improvements, and hopefully by freeing up wage budget, i can find a suitable player, either on loan or a free transfer.

Defensive Midfielders
First Choice: Youssouf Mulumbu (26)
Substitute: George Thorne (20)
Youth: N/A
Ordinarily, George Thorne would be a player i would regard as a Youth prospect, however due to Youssouf being our only current defensive mid, George is regarded as our backup, once he has recovered from a cruciate injury. He is rated as 4.5*, so I anticipate a battle to keep a hold of him.

Central Midfielders
First Choice: James Morrison (27)/ Claudio Yacob (25)
Substitute: Graham Dorrans (26)
Youth: N/A
Another position which is worryingly thin, however there is also George Thorne who will be available to cover, and most of the attacking midfielders in the squad are capable of covering this position also, which is a godsend.

Left Winger
First Choice: Chris Brunt (28)
Substitute: Scott Sinclair (24)
Youth: N/A
Here, Chris and Scott are again interchangeable, once Scott has recovered from injury...again, the youth squad is worryingly thin on talent, but I will be seeking to improve our youth system over the course of my time here.

Right Winger
First Choice: Morgan Amalfitano (28)
Substitute: Matej Vydra (21)
Youth: N/A
Here, we also have Zoltan Gera, who is 34, and as such I feel that offering Matej Vydra playing time is more beneficial for the squad. Both Vydra and Amalfitano are on loan, from OM and Udinese respectively, and i'm hoping to be able to sign at least one on a permanent basis by the end of the season.

Striker
First Choice: Shane Long (26)
Substitute: Nicholas Anelka (34)
Youth: Saido Berahino (19)
Berahino will also be used as a rotation option, due to his 2* current ability, and his 4.5* potential...Overall, I do have a wealth of options in attack, and will probably seek to move some of them on in order to generate some transfer funds for later in the season.
Many of you will have noticed that i've missed out Stephane Sessengon...this is because in the formation I intend to play, there's no room for an attacking midfielder, in the traditional sense...however, I am considering that I may employ and train him as a striker, as he could potentially make a solid False Nine? Any thoughts would be useful, as I would rather not sell him, but can never get an attacking midfielder to work in my sides :/

Anyway, my pre-season starts in four days, and I will update just before the start of the season!

I think you can sign Vydra at the end of the halfway mark, most times, his contract won't be renewed.

Stephane Sessengon missing was the first thing I noticed, lol. You can play him for half a season on wings or striker or midfield (I just ignore the positional rating at times) and then sell him in January for a better price and strengthen the area which is weak, or if he performs really well just keep him.

Matches

1. West Brom 1 - 2 Santos Laguna
Youssouf Mulumbu - 9'
Despite the result, the boys put in a good performance, harrying the opposition, and limiting their opportunities. I'm still assessing my lineup and tactics, and have a raft of trialists at the club just now, in the hope of finding cover for the squad.

2. West Brom 1 - 2 Nurnberg
Matej Vydra - 77'
Another 2-1 defeat, but again, there were positives here, namely the performance of Vydra after half-time. It's proving difficult to find a settled squad, but i'm still tinkering with my tactics to find a system that works.

3. Coventry 0 - 2 West Brom
Chris Brunt - 47'
Victor Anichebe - 85'

A much more positive performance, Anichebe in particular impressed today, and staked a real claim for first-team football when the league starts.

4. West Brom 2 - 1 Livorno
Victor Anichebe - 39'
Anderson - 41'

I'm delighted with this result: Started the same team as against Coventry, and it paid off; Anichebe was again impressive, along with James Morrison on the left wing. The team are starting to settle now, but more work's needed on fitness, as after 2 games they're starting to look a bit jaded.

Player of Pre-Season

Victor Anichebe: He's been outstanding in the two games we won, playing well and causing defences problems constantly; he's made a strong case for first-team football

Overall
Overall, i'm pleased with pre-season. although we lost Yacob, we brought in a good number of players to supplement the squad, despite not getting WPs for some of the trialists. The team's morale is improving slowly but surely, and i'm looking forward to the start of the season.

Yeah, he's been impressing when i've played him on the wings...I'll look into re-training him and see how that goes :D

FM Keeps Crashing...i'm going to leave this here for now, and hopefully pick it up again in the coming weeks once i can get FM14 sorted :(
