What approach to tactics should i use?

I've heard it said by some that only an attacking 4-4-2 works on fm11 (wingers advanced between mid and forwards).
I have tried to investigate two formations with two different teams.
diamond 4-4-2 with England
4-5-1 with Ipswich.

Now the details of these two are irrelevant for what i want to ask.
I want to know whether people have had more success changing every little setting on advanced tactics or just tweaking one or two things?
Also whether people change the positional role of a player according to the player or to the system they want to play?

Please bare in mind that i am using patch 11.3

most people say narrow tactics work the best for Fm11, 3 Cm's 1 amc and 2 forwards or even 3cm's and 3 forwards...

it depends on what players you have mate my favourite is still my 4-3-3 tactic, 1 dm 2cm 2 am's (wingers) and 1 striker...

I have had good result with using most formations within the TC, some tweaked formations based on the TC ones, both by using changes in strategy/shouts as well as using the advanced settings, turning the tactic into à plug & play. In my opinion, the best way to approach the game is to look at the squad, setup some realistic goals, make à tactic that seems solid and then ask your self if this approach is likely to make you achieve those goals.

Having read other threads and posts as well as ur answers guys im going to assess my Ipswich Town squad in terms of what they can and cannot do, then adjust my basic tactics accordingly and possibly tweak acouple things according to certain players.
Also i have been using "Assistants assessments" as a barometer of who should play rather than looking at their attributes.
