Seen a few players with excellent attributes (even mental and physical ones) and good ppm's but they are just so bad with both a human manager and AI. On the other hand, some players have bad attributes but perform really well consistently.

How important are attributes in determining how well a player plays?

There the basic guide but counts for not much if hes in a team he hates (teammates) or in unfamiliar role or style, some players will just be square pegs in round holes in some clubs or playing abroad.

There's also how is their consistency score. If it's low they're bound to very rarely perform to the potential marked by their stats.

Thought it was only me that noticed this issue. Yes i am sure people will talk about roles/duties as if we do not know how they work. I put it down to the very poor match engine its that simple. Very annoying and shocking when a **** player with low consistency does so well ahead of player with way better stats all round

You've just made that up. Please stop running around making stuff up.
OP, hidden attributes are also important, wkdsoul and death ball sum it up well.

The ability to settle with team mates is important too. Language etc.

I completely disagree with this opinion, but try and validate it. Why does the match engine work that way, according to you?

The match engine is fine.

There's so many factors: consistency attribute, players position familiarity, role they're in, your formation, their personality, the player he's marking, opposition instructions, opposition's tactics, morale, language barrier, tactic fluidity, team talk ect ect.

Had a youngster in FM2013. Poor potential, great stats. I thought, what the ****, it's only 700k, let's give it a try. After 2 season with the youth team, i decided to put him in the front line. Averaged 7.5+ every season, scoring 10+ goals too. Central defender.
I would rather buy a poor player (potential) with good stats than a good one with poor stats.
Look at Alex Kiwomya from Chelsea for example. Great potential, but he has the stats for a star player in Gibraltar.
