Why isn't my team playing by the tactics?

I have started a new game with West Brom and bought a player and loaned 2 players to strenghthen the squad. I am using a 4-2-4 tactic with the midfielders playing a defensive role and 2 wingers and 2 strikers up front. I have set it to control and expressive and more roaming. Just apparently that is a better way to go for this tactic.

I also have the game at a slow tempo with a playmaker and a target man. Also I have passing on short. For most of the game I find the team defending. And they do the job quite well, not many opportunities. But when we attack, as expected it is really slow but often the midfielder will just stop and the ball will be taken from him, or he will make an attempted pass and completely miss. The passing is aweful and it is like the team are made up of 5 year olds. Often the 2 strikers are out wide for no reason and even though I tell the wingers to hug the touchline and run and cross the ball very often... they cut in and just blast the ball anywhere. I never get good opportunities and it is getting rather rediculous now.

Is this because I have expressive and more roaming on? Should I change it to stick to positions? I have tried that once but it wasn't that great still to be honest.

well mate to be fair,it happens if you try a too ambitious tactic with a weak team,I'd try to stick to a simple 4-4-2 rigid tactic

Ok, but the problem is then I can't see myself getting promoted :S.

Too much creative freedom with less than exceptional players is a very bad idea, change your creative freedom to default and give that a go

I have took away the expressive freedom and made it a rigid 4-4-2.... still not too great. I find myself still defending most of the time whilst the players make rediculous mistakes. The players are good players for this league aswell its really frustrating. And this is an attacking side I am setting up...

Mate I know what you are saying is techinally correct as you are a great team in your respective league but the problem is no matter how good you are in your league, your players cant be considered good on the wrold stage, try some rigid,counter-attacking tactics, they usually work for me in Lower-League Managing

okey dokey. I think the game is a little disappointing in that aspect. Obviously the players are not going t obe amazing and dribble past players like Messi and then smash the ball in the back of the net like Rooney but that doesn't mean they cant play. Watching the game it is actually like they can't play at all. Just standing there and not being able to pass... I can do that ;P. And every team is better then me.

If that is down to the game then.. well it is too frustrating ^_^. Thank you anyways :).

Just as a suggestion, try downloading some of the tactics on this site, see if they work with your squad and then work off those. See what works with some and not others, then build your own tactic, that's what i did when i started :)

So you have people on 'more expressive' and 'more roaming' and you're wondering why they aren't doing what you're telling them and being all across the pitch?

You could try putting those on default and just setting up each player individually, like only giving 1-2 players with high creativity more creative freedom and having one striker stick to position (closing down 0 and no roaming) and one to roam. Also the wingers should propably have roaming on if for no other reason than the fact that wingers just sticking to touchline are almost completely useless in fm 10 unless your strikers are 20cm taller than all your opponents. And atleast one of your MC should do forward runs (run from deep to full) and be on a more attacking role than just putting both on defend. Otherwise you don't have enough passing lanes in your opponents end especially with your wide players playing too far away from everyone at the touchline.

I played a quite similar 2-2-2-2-2 on my leeds save by year 2015 or so and it worked quite well. I just had both wingers as inside forwards and had ok wing backs to back them up.

1. Highlight your centre midfielder, tick Hold Up ball on his player instructions and change it to no, so he will not hold the ball up. If this does not work then make it a quicker tempo.

2. Put them on passing training or make sure passing is ticked and set to as short as possinle on player instructions.

3. Go on the strikers player instructions and tick roam from position and change it to no and make sure that swap position and wide play are set as none.

4. Make sure cut inside is never on the player instructions.
