Mathew Plant was appointed Wigan Manager the start of the 09-10 season. Plant had this to say, "It's great to get the chance to work here, this club has good foundations in which to build a solid club capable of conquering Europe." A bold statement indeed and with intentions to finish in European Qualification in the first season, was giving a modest budget of around £7m.

Plant soon made extra funds available with the sales of players such as, De Ridder (5m Man City), Edman (2.3m Wolves), Boyce (2.7m Everton), Cho Won-Hee (Q.P.R 2.5m), Rodallega (4m Sao Paulo), Marlon King (5m Man City), Koumas (1.6m Wolves).

That was a total of 23 million made from selling some players...

Plant would then go on to sign some rather promising players.

Kevin Thomson (230k Loan Deal, Rangers), Stakanovic (free), Tom De Mul (2.2m, Sevilla), Degen (475k Ln Deal, Liverpool), Blaszczykowski (7.5m, Dortmund), Zaki (2.2m Zamalek), Alibec (350k Ln Deal, Inter), Defederico (1.1m Loan Deal, Corinthians), Riquelme (9.5m, Boca).

This made a running total of 23.5 million. I think to only spend an extra 500k and have some big names in there, is some good busines.
Results Up Till Now!

Wigan Athletic 0 vs 2 Hull City
This was a sour one, after it looked so promising. We was comprehensively beaten! There were no excuses and we needed to move forward on this. (This was before we signed Riquelme, Defederico, etc.).

Wigan Athletic 0 vs 2 West Ham United
Again, we looked so accomplished but we beaten to a pulp in all aspects of the match! It seemed like Europe was very far away indeed.

Stoke City 1 vs 0 Wigan Athletic
This being a derby game, we needed to deliver for the fans and we almost did, untill an 83rd minute goal meant we had gotten 0 points from a possible 9. Gutting for me and the fans!

Wigan Athletic 5 vs 2 Millwall (League Cup)
At last something to cheer about, even though we had to come from behind after an early penalty, this win looks like it may have given us some momentum and something to work off!

Wigan Athletic 3 vs 0 Tottenham Hotspur
Well, who says that you can predict football, it seems that the previous result has helped us go forward and give us some confidence, this result knocked Spurs off the top of the table and put us off the bottom!

Birmingham City 1 vs 3 Wigan Athletic
Another game where we had to come from behind and it seemed that we may have gotten a winning formula, Riquelme scored on debut and Defederico got a nice assist.

Later we will do some player profiling.

Good luck mate. Wigan is an interesting one, ill follow

Thats odd i could never sell King at all intill finally QPR signed him for 1mil:D. Your lucky City made a good bid like that lol.

riquelme for 9.5m? omg!? he's not worth it. alejandro dominiguez would have been better for much cheaper. good luck though ^^)

League Cup Third Round!

Arguably the best round if terms of 'giant-killing' and the Latics faced this threat, whislt hosting Barnsley.

Things started off great for the home side, with all the pressure and possession in their favour. However, unable to find a break-through they went in goalless and Barnsley made it clear they were going to be hard to score against, due to the likes of Steve Foster dictating the defense.
However, the break did Wigan good and they were in front, just a minute into the 2nd half, Matias Defederico with a sublime finish as well as starting the move in the first place. Defederico was being deployed as a trequartista and it was working very well. Six minutes later and it was 2-0, Defederico again, picking up the ball - feeding it out to De Mul who crossed it back and it was as easy as that.

Barsnley looked out of it, until some inspired work from Jon Macken, beating the offside trap and finishing around Kirkland with ease, all this just 5 minutes after the Defederico onslaught. Wigan were holding on now, they were dictating play but kept losing the ball cheaply. This time Campbell-Ryce crossed the ball in and a feeble Kirkland punch ended with Macken volleying one in from 25 yards. The comeback was complete.

End of 90 minutes and Barnsley were unlucky not to win in that time, due to Macken being in one-on-one and fluffling the opportuinity. 1st half in extra time passed and Barnsley were looking strong, holding out for the chance of penalties. with just 9 minutes left, Jason Scotland picks up the ball and simply runs about 30 yards, before letting one rip! Top right hand corner, wham, bam, thank you mam! To kick Barnsley when they were down after such a defiant performance, Scotland was 'suspectedly' fouled in the box on 116 minutes and Defederico put the ball away to claim his hattrick!

A very good game for the neutral. Latic's fans have now caught League Cup fever after being drawn at home to Preston... can they win this competition?

Following that Birmingham game, things have gone very well for Wigan!

Blackburn Rovers 3 vs 3
Wigan Athletic
This was a fantastic game for the neutral, Blackburn took a quick 2-0 lead, only to be pegged back 3-2 to only then find a goal in the 94th minute. Quite the heartbreak, however still 1 point gained than 2 lost, in my opinion.

Wigan Athletic 2 vs 2 Liverpool
Wigan have just delivered nothing but entertainment this season! Liverpool dominated in spells, but then at other times were completely outclassed by Wigan, this gave me the confidence that we can perform at a higher level.
Wigan Athletic 2 vs 1 Portsmouth
This result helped us climb the table after a couple of weeks of just one pointers, we need to keep winning games like this to have any kind of shout in making the Euro places.

Manchester City 1 vs 2 Wigan Athletic
A beautiful game! Wigan dominated City until the last 20 minutes when another defender was thrown on to save the game, City then got one back but Wigan held on, this meant that we were just 1 point behind Man Utd, who were 7th at the time. City at this point were top, until we beat them!

Wigan Athletic 2 vs 1 Preston North End (League Cup 5th Round)
This is the result we wanted against our rivals, it meant were put into the quarter final and we've been drawn against Everton, the semi-finals look a real possibility.

Wigan Athletic 1 vs 2 Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Two early Kevin Doyle goals meant we were constantly on the backfoot, this meant that we were chasing the game and now Wolves are ahead of us. It's frustrating to see us beat teams like City and Spurs and draw against Liverpool, to then throw away the opportunities we present ourselves.

That is the end of the October Month and suprisingly the table looks like this....

Give them time to gel and hopefully the results will come your way

Nice story, will check around, btw wat tactic are u using cause u seem to get good results

:) Blues are doing worse than in real life happy days :)

My tactic is relatively straight forward.

Set certain individual tactics, play more defensively away (with rigid philosophy). Be more open at home.

I'm thinking if i can do this tactic for a few seasons, build up some finances and then get in some world class players, so i can be more open away from home.

I will be holding a press conference for the actual users of FMBase! If you want to ask a question (preferably Jounalistic style) please do. Either on this thread, or through PM!

:)

If we are discussing long-term, then yes.

At the moment, after the January transfer-window (which is where i'm at now, and will come in the next update) i am confident we will have a very good squad that with the right investment is capable of going to greater things.

I kinda got a move on with the game, it is now the end of the January transfer window.

The results up till now, go like this.

Sunderland 0 vs 1 Wigan
Wigan 3 vs 1 Fulham
Wigan 1 vs 4 Arsenal
Wigan 2 vs 1 Everton (League Cup Quarter Final)
Aston Villa 1 vs 2 Wigan
Wigan 1 vs 3 Chelsea
Bolton 4 vs 2 Wigan
Wigan 0 vs 2 Man Utd
Wigan 0 vs 0 Burnley
Everton 3 vs 1 Wigan
Wigan 1 vs Hull 2 (That one stung a bit)
West Ham 4 vs 1 Wigan
Wigan 4 vs 0 Notts County (FA Cup 3rd Round)
Wigan 2 vs 2 Liverpool (League Cup Semi Final 1st Leg)
Wigan 3 vs 3 Stoke
Tottenham 1 vs 0 Wigan
Liverpool 1 vs 2 Wigan (League Cup Semi Final 2nd Leg) (Wooohoooo!!)
Wigan 4 vs 0 Burnely (FA Cup 4th Round)

Right now, as you can see from the league performances, we had a lot of big games close together which has a detrimental affect on morale. Whereby in the domestic cup's we have done fantastic, in my first term, we are in the League Cup final and into the 5th round of the FA Cup (which was where the fans expected).

In terms of the club ourselves, we have lost a few players this window.

Hendry Thomas to Everton (who can't play him but can loan him out [work permit])
James McCarthy to Celtic
Jordi Gomez to Fulham
Callum McManaman to Peterborough
Antonio Amaya (loan) to Cardiff
Dejan Stefanovic to Reading
Oliver Kapo (loan) to West Bromwich Albion
Jason Scotland to Liverpool (wonder if that's what Rafa wanted in a 2nd world class striker).

In addition to this:

Kyrgiakos had a spat with Rafael Benitez and we managed to snap him up on the cheap.
Koke (16 year old at Atletico Madrid) signed him and paid 1.7m compensation.
Gabriel Obertan signed on loan.
Rafael signed on loan.
Jadon (signed out-of-contract) from Shaktar.
Fabio Aurelio signed from Liverpool for 2.7 million, bargain!
Also signed Phillip Degen after Loan-to-buy option.
Darren Gibson (2.5m) from Man Utd.

So, some decent signings, but nothing amazing that stands out.

Doing great but I'd recommend you don't make too many transfers to let them gel and really praise the players when they do well to boost morale.
