in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 what is the best way I can play my wingers with my wing backs. Essentially, I want my wingers cutting in when the opportunity arises and playing through balls, shooting, etc. but I also want them holding the ball up and letting my wing backs over lap for a cross. Thirdly, I also want them to take it to the byline to cross or play it back to the wing back or other player. Essentially, I don't want predictable play from my wingers, and I want them to to make plays according to the situation in the game. What role and mentality would best give me this result? inside forward or winger, and attack or support?

I've made a fantastic tactic and I'm going to share next days. I'm playing with 4-3-3 or 4-3-2-1...with wings.
first you need to have your right and left defender set to attacking full backs support (prefered moves go forward whenever is possibile, i suggest).
Set the left footed winger on right and viceversa. Prefered mooves cut inside and set "play close" (not wide) in winger istruction untill they don't have learn it. I suggest to check play free (movements) go forward...
I'm sorry for my english, hope this could help. I'll post my tactics soon so you could understand better.

I guess wide target man is the only role that lets you pick what and how you want things done in player instructions....however, you cant both dribble more and hold up the ball in any role...

The Tactic system employed in FM is too one dimensional. For Example, the Arsenal's game today, I believe it was Wilshere (playing out on the right) literally held up the ball on the corner of the box, and waited for sagna to overlap and played him on. There was times at the game where Wilshere and Cazorla played both as wingers as inside forwards. These players skill sets allow them to do that. Their decision making process is very situational, and this doesn't translate to Football Manager at all.

you can have your wide player do both cutting inside and crossing from byline....that is what you are looking for....what bothers me is that I can't have my inside forward close down the fullback on his side, except when in match...
