Basically in FM17 iv come up with a fairly basic tactic that works amazingly, and then for some reason it just turns to absolute rubbish and I can't buy a win...?!?!

iv used it in 3 games, i got Salford promoted by winning my the league and then got battered every game the following season.. I got Southend promoted and the same thing happened. And now Iv started a Sheffield united game - I went 18 games unbeaten winning15 of them and then in the next 18 games iv won 3?!

just wondering if anyone can shed any light on why it's happening so drastically?

When i I get on a winning streak it's like I can't lose and then with the same tactic I get on a losing streak and can't win

driving me mad!

thanks

There are a few possibilities...

What can often happen when you are using a side that is expected to be bottom. You go into almost every match as the underdog, teams tend to attack you, and you can either counter them or overwhelm them with a very attacking approach (which is what you are doing). Doing a bit of a Leicester. But teams will adjust. Around mid-season, there is a "reconsideration" of expectations. So teams that may have played more aggressively against you in the first half of the year will suddenly play more conservatively. You can't counter or overwhelm them as easily, and they are better set to counter you if you leave yourself open. Which you very much are with this tactic. There could be other causes and reasons, but given the timing, that looks likely to me.

Unless you have a clear advantage in player quality, I'm not surprised you are having problems with this. You have 5 players on attack duties. You have only 2 players who will really look to defend - your central defenders. Your BWM will be chasing the ball all over, your wingbacks will be forward, and when you turn the ball over, you have almost no players back to defend a counter. In other defending situations, you will have 3 players who won't help out much at all (Striker, AM, winger) and the winger on support may be too high to help at times. You will get overwhelmed in midfield at times, especially against a 3 man midfield, because your AM won't help a lot, your BMW just chases, and your DLP is left to try to shield your defense all alone.

Simplicity can certainly work in FM. But it requires balance. Your approach here is rather unbalanced and while it will work sometimes, its not likely to work consistently.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

Further to your points, My midfield does get over run your totally right, but when I'm dominating it doesn't matter because the wins keep coming anyway.

Its happened 3 times now so i do have faith (albeit possibly misplaced) in the tactic it's just the bad runs don't seem stoppable?

Do do you think that changing the tactic completely is the way forward when I hit a bad run? Is so frustrating because I go from circa 10 points clear to 4th in the league. Don't know how to combat it, and really don't get how it can go so wrong. Do you think that perhaps when I hit a bad run with it to compensate your perceived flaws in the tactic perhaps set wingers further back or to support, and full backs too?

Or, more simply put - given your points what do you think I need to do to stop the rot? And do you think Are there any inherent flaws that you would say are fundementally the key areas that are costing me when I hit a bad run?

Thanks in advance

I play a 4231 with cardiff, against better teams I'll play counter with my dlp on defend and b2b on support with my wing backs on support along with my left wing which seems to give me plenty of defensive cover, sometimes I'll play counter against the smaller clubs as well to try and draw them out of defence. I also never have all my wide players on attack, for instance if my lw is on attack I'll play my left wing back on support so they don't both get forward.

Sounds like a change to attack to control to stop counters could work for you

I totally agree with every word.
