JONES IN, JOHNSON OUT

Weeks away from embarking on their maiden Championship season, Yeovil Town chairman John Fry has made the extraordinary decision to sack successful and popular manager Gary Johnson and replaced him with unknown Welsh manager Gwyn Jones, 33.

JOHNSON REACTION
Gary Johnson, 53, is a well-respected manager and has refused to comment on events thus far, the ex-Latvia manager preferring to stay in the shadows.

The experienced manager had accumulated 6 years at Yeovil in two separate spells at the club, winning three promotions and the FA Trophy in his time at the club.

FAN AND PLAYER REACTION
"Can't believe what's happening at Huish Park #FryOut"-@YTFC4EVA

"Just want to thank GJ for everything he's done, hope we can progress under new boss"-@Gary_McAllister

WHO IS GWYN JONES?
Gwyn Jones was born on the 23rd of June 1980 to Rhiannon and Dafydd Jones in Aberystwyth. Jones attended the much-fabled Aberystwyth University, where he earned a degree in Sports Science. Jones grew up watching Aberystwyth Town play in the Welsh Divsion and played for the club, winning the Mid Wales League Division 1 on 4 occasions and the Aberystwyth League Division 2 once.

This is Jones' first job in management, and he could hardly have picked a harder one.

PRESS CONFERENCE

I walked up to the big luminous green door, bottle of water in hand, waiting for it to open. I turned to look at the small group of staff standing with me outside the door, each one focused, each one confident.

I saw the door open and several bright white flashes from the many cameras stationed around the room, I muttered a silent prayer before going in.

I took a seat next to Mr Fry and waited for the interrogation to begin.

"Yeovil are your first job in management, how will you deal with the pressure?"

"I'll just knuckle down and get on with it"
"But with no experience to draw back on, how will you succeed?"

"Like I said, I'll just knuckle down and get on with it"
"Yeovil are obviously one of the smallest clubs to have ever graced the Championship, how will you dea with the challenge?"

"I'll go in head first and try to take this club to the heights that the town and fas deserve to reach"
"What are your feelings on Mr John Fry?"

"I think he's a good man who wants nothing but the best for this football club"
"And how about the playing staff? What improvements do you think are needed?"

"I think that the squad is strong enough to stay in the division, with only a slight bit of tinkering needed"
"That's it, thank you"

I stood up and walked off, thinking about how it went, it went well, in my mind and hopefully I didn't come across as an idiot. Besides, I was right about the squad, one or two players and hey'll be fine, and I already have a payer lined up.

THE SQUAD

Yeovil came fourth in League One last season, winning the Play-Off Final and I could see why, the squad was good for League 1 with a couple of bright youngsters, ones I hope I can exploit.

GOALKEEPERS
View attachment 386269
Marek Stech is by far our best goalkeeper, but the young Czech has broken his hand, leaving him out until January at least, thankfully I got him to sign a new deal as his old one ran out in 2014

View attachment 386266
Chris, unfortunately, isn't the greatest back-up keeper and the coaches don't rate him at all, but unless we can find a decent keeper for a low price, he's going to be the man between the sticks

DEFENDERS
View attachment 386265
Luke is another good youngster who signed a contract extension, he'll be a cornerstone of the team at right-back who will hopefully progress

View attachment 386264
Matteo is going to be Luke Aylings understudy this season who will make a couple of appearances at right-back and centre-half this season

View attachment 386261
Byron is going to be our main centre-half this season alongside Shane Duffy, hopefully he can stop us conceding and pop up with a few down the other end

View attachment 386260
Shane will be the other centre-half who will partner Byron Webster in almost every game of the season (barring injury and suspension)

View attachment 386259
Jamie is our captain and best left-back, he's a bit old to be a cornerstone for years, but he'll be right up there this year

View attachment 386258
Liam will, by and large, be McAllisters understudy this season, he'll make a couple of appearanes here and there however

MIDFIELDERS
View attachment 386257
Joe Edwards is going to be one of our midfield three and will play an important role this season

View attachment 386256
Mr Lundstram will be the holding midfielder and will prove to be vital as we try to stay in the division

View attachment 386255
Kevin will be a back-up to Lundstram and Edwards this season

View attachment 386254
Joe will be the most attacking of the trio this season

WINGERS
View attachment 386253
Sam Foley will be our main left winger this season as he is one of only two wingers at the club

View attachment 386252
Foley will be facing competition from this man, Jamaican winger/striker Joel Grant, he'll be a good back-up on the wing and up-top

STRIKERS
View attachment 386251
James Hayter will be one of two strikers jostling for that forward slot

View attachment 386250
Ishmael Miller is hopefully going to be one of the most important factors of our survival this season, hopefully he can bang in some goals

VERDICT-Not a bad squad although over-reliance on loan players may catch us out in later years, a right-winger is desperately needed

PRE-SEASON AND TRANSFERS

For my first pre-season in management I employed the tactics they used at Aberystwyth. Make them run around the pitch until they couldn't run anymore. This fitness based training schedule will hopefully stop the players from burning out later in the season.

PRE-SEASON

Yeovil 1-0 Yeovil Reserves
Miller

Yeovil 1-1 Bradford
Hayter--McBurnie

Eastleigh 0-0 Yeovil

Weymouth 0-4 Yeovil
Davis, Grant (2), Morgan

Gillingham 1-0 Yeovil
Linganzi

Sherbourne 0-2 Yeovil
Miller, Grant

VERDICT-A decent preparation for the season with some decent wins and only one disappointing loss, Joel Grant played very well and may have earned a start or two

TRANSFERS
INS

View attachment 386227
We needed a right-winger and Doncaster Rovers wideman James Coppinger fitted the bill nicely, bundles of experience and a good head

View attachment 386225
Again, we needed a player and Maik Taylor fitted the bill, bringing lots of experience and 88 Northern Irish caps with him

THREE BIG SIGNINGS

Yeovil Town manager Gwyn Jones has today proudly announced the signings of two BIG players.

The duo, one Spaniard and one from Portugal are believed to have been signed on free transfers both on around ?5,000 per week

View attachment 386196 View attachment 386195

The veterans will add some much needed flair to the team, with Jones hoping they'll keep Yeovil in the Championship.

The other signing for Yeovil is that of young Coventry full-back Blair Adams, the Sunderland trainee was bought by Yeovil for ?1.2m, all of which is to be paid over 48 months

AUGUST

My first month of managing in the Championship, how did we do?

Championship
Millwall v Yeovil

View attachment 386162

We started poorly and Millwall ripped us to shreds with Josh Wright scoring seven minutes in. We were 2-0 down before we got going, should have drawn but Ishmael Miller missed a sitter in the 90th minute

League Cup First Round
Yeovil v Plymouth

View attachment 386158
Another poor performance where we barely got going early on, Luke Ayling scored a cracker only to be pegged back four minutes later. James Hayter grabbed the winner ten minutes into the second half

Vicente and Gomes sign

Championship
Yeovil v Birmingham

View attachment 386153

A brilliant game at Huish Park before Vicente broke the deadlock with a debut penalty, Coppinger added to our advantage with a pea roller into the bottom right corner. Peter Lovenkrands gave us a slight scare with a near-post header but we weathered the storm

Championship
Burnley v Yeovil

View attachment 386150
What a game! We took the lead when a cross bounced off Tom Heaton into the net, but were pegged back ten minutes later by a Sam Vokes volley, Danny Ings then put Burnley ahead just before half-time. We came out slowly and Sam Vokes capitalised, scoring his second of the afternoon, Vicente scored his second penalty in a Yeovil shirt to drag us back from the abyss, before another pea roller from Coppinger equalised for us. Vicente then had a goal wrongly disallowed for offside

Championship
Yeovil v Derby

View attachment 386146
A shock result here against high-flyers Derby! A game where we were battered by County changed after the interval when Ishmael Miller went through the defence and scored. Vicente followed up with another penalty before Simon Dawkins gave us an injury time scare

League Cup Second Round

View attachment 386143
Another six-goal game at Turf Moor, unfortunately for us however we were out of it by the time Miller scored our second. Kightly put Burnley ahead, but we bounced back immediately, unfortunately Bigrimana put Burnley back on top before a Sam Vokes goal. Vokes scored again with twelve minutes to go. Miller scored his second in the 81st minute, but it was nothing but a consolation

Blair Adams signs

Championship
Yeovil v Reading

View attachment 386141
Another game full of what-ifs. Luke Ayling was forced off with a concussion early on but Matteo Lanzoni slipped in seamlessly, Vicente scored yet another penalty in the fourteenth minute, but big Russian striker Pavel Pogrebnyak equalised soon after, the game was end-to-end and a draw was a fair result

John Lundstram injured
Blair Adams injured
Luke Ayling injured

VERDICT
A good month with some good results, happy to be out of the League Cup because the league is what's important

LEAGUE POSITION-10th

SEPTEMBER

Another month, will it be as good?

Championship
Sheffield Wednesday v Yeovil

View attachment 385931
A drab match all over, neither side being able to beat the others defence down

Championship
Ipswich v Yeovil

View attachment 385929
Another poor game during which neither side really got going, although we've taken 2 points from 2 tough away games

Championship
Yeovil v QPR

View attachment 385928
Finally some goals although we failed to score any ourselves. We fell behind to a Yossi Benayoun volley seven minutes in and then Maiga tap-in five minutes later. Nedum Onouha got himself in the way of a James Coppinger cross to turn it into his net and to score the last of the goals.

Championship
Bolton v Yeovil

View attachment 385927
Our third 0-0 in four games as we draw in a drab match against Bolton. I'm starting to feel sorry for our fans

VERDICT-A poor month as we draw three games and lose the other, dropping three positions

LEAGUE POSITION-13th

OCTOBER

Will we regain our league form in the third month of the season?

Championship
Yeovil v Leicester

View attachment 385595
Another 0-0! I'm not sure if Ishmael Miller and co have had some curse cast upon them or something but this is getting stupid. But it's still a point against a good side

Championship
Middlesbrough v Yeovil

View attachment 385594
Some goals! Six to be exact, but a 5-1 battering and an injury to Joe Edwards ensured that the trip to Middlesbrough wasn't a happy one for the Glovers fans

Championship
Yeovil v Brighton

View attachment 385585
What a way to reply! A last minute goal from Ishmael Miller secured a first win of the month and an end to our rocky spell, a bad injury to Coppinger over-shadowed the victory

Championship
Yeovil v Nottingham Forest

View attachment 385581
Another win! Our strikers have found their form and Nuno Gomes scores his first goal for Yeovil in a game in which we secure another win against a top side

VERDICT

A decent month where a poor loss is outweighed by the seven points we gained in tough games

LEAGUE POSITION-11th

View attachment 385578

NOVEMBER

After a good month during which we climbed to eleventh after some good results, can we pick it up?

Championship
Leeds v Yeovil

View attachment 384359
After a Luke Ayling goal put us 1-0 we combusted and allowed Ross McCormack to score a soft goal to equalise, Vicente popped up in the 79th minute to win it for us

Championship
Yeovil v Wigan

View attachment 384357
An early Vicente goal put us on the front foot against the Cup holders, the other Iberian Nuno Gomes doubled our advantage before Vicente grabbed his second a minute after half-time. Nick Powell bagged a consolation with three minutes to go

Championship
Doncaster v Yeovil

View attachment 384356
An even game before Nuno Gomes put us ahead, we dominated but a counter-attack from Donny ended in a freak own goal from Byron Webster, still a point gained rather than two lost

Championship
Watford v Yeovil

View attachment 384354
There aren't many better ways to follow a disappointing draw than a comfortable two-goal win on the road. Joel Grant put us ahead with a screamer in the 74th minute, before Nuno Gomes bagged his third goal in as many games to secure the win

VERDICT-A top quality month which saw us rise a few places in the table whilst taking some impressive scalps, who would have though ten years ago that Yeovil Town would beat Leeds United at Elland Road?

LEAGUE POSITION-8th

View attachment 384352

DECEMBER

We've played well recently and put in some impressive performances, so will the team give me an early Christmas present?

Championship
Yeovil v Blackpool

View attachment 382710
An early James Coppinger goal was enough to beat the Tangerines at Huish Park, but an injury to left-back Blair Adams put us in a sticky situation defence-wise

Championship
Yeovil v Charlton
View attachment 382709
A bore draw with neither side really pushing for goals, a draw a fair result

Championship
Barnsley v Yeovil

View attachment 382708
James Coppinger pops up with another goal and that goal with 13 minutes left was enough to sink Barnsley

Championship
Yeovil v Blackburn

View attachment 382706
A cool Nuno Gomes penalty put us ahead in the second minute of first half stoppage time, and Vicente doubled the advantage in the 69th minute, but a freak implosion from The Glovers meant that Grant Hanley and Craig Connway could draw the game for Rovers

Championship
Bournemouth v Yeovil

View attachment 382705
A Nuno Gomes goal was once again enough for us to win this time the Portugese superstar beat The Cherries at Dean Court

Championship
Huddersfield v Yeovil

View attachment 382704
Our first loss since the 5-1 mauling at Riverside against Middlesbrough, Anthony Gerrards back-post header was enough to beat us in Yorkshire

VERDICT-A great month where we picked up 11 points and climbed the league table

LEAGUE POSITION-8th

View attachment 382703

JANUARY

Silly season is upon us, will there be any additions?

Championship
Yeovil v Watford

View attachment 379984
A bore draw here at Huish Park, the players were probably hungover

FA Cup Third Round
Yeovil v Walsall

View attachment 379981
An easy game where we coasted past our League 1 opponents, Ishmael Millers tap in put us ahead before Nuno Gomes doubled the advantage. McDeermotts goal gave us a few worries but Vicentes strike put any worries into the backs of our minds

Championship
Yeovil v Burnley

View attachment 379975
A boring game when nothing really happened until a speculative James Coppiner strike put us ahead in the 68th minute, a Byron Webster header made it 2 five minutes later, before Nuno Gomes completed the rout in additional time

Championship
Birmingham v Yeovil

View attachment 379973
Byron Webster grabbed an unexpected double here at St Andrews but even that couldn't win us the game, good responses from Birmingham meant that the points were shared

Championship
Yeovil v Millwall

View attachment 379966
DJ Campbell dampened the mood of the Yeovil ultras early on but Nuno Gomes got the much feared Glovers firing again. Jamaican winger Joel Grant put us ahead with not long to go and Shane Duffy won us the game in the dying embers

FA Cup Fourth Round
Watford v Yeovil

View attachment 379961
Joel Grants equaliser was nice for the coffers bur not for our squads fitness, an unnecessary distraction from League Football

Championship
Derby v Yeovil

View attachment 379957
Injuries and fitness issues plagued us at Pride Park with our second string team facing the rampant Rams, Simon Dawkins scored a hat-trick and Sammon scored their fourth to sink us

VERDICT-A decent month until the Derby game, two deadline day signings should help our push for promotion

LEAGUE POSITION-9th

View attachment 379955

View attachment 379954 View attachment 379953

With no money in the bank loan deals were the only options, we took one on loan from the division above us and one from the division below us, hopefully Jake Cassidys goals and Darnell Situs clearances can get us promotion

Great results mate, keep it up. What tactic are you using?
