Young player doing really well but declining

So, I am playing Liverpool in the third season and Coates has gotten 2 full seasons in the CB area now. But all his stats are declining.

Skrtels stats are going up, despite him being considerably older.

Coates is also doing really well for me !

Anybody know what that might be?
