What I've learnt from many, many years of playing this game is that it is excactly that. A game. You are very right in your observations if we were discussing real life football, but I'm yet to see a version of FM that doesn't favour some kind of counterintuitive instructions.
I can give no guarantees, but as I said: In my journeyman save I'm on my 7th season with three different clubs, and the tactic has worked well in the first season, but more importantly even better in the second season at every club - without me being able to build the classic 2020 Super Team...

I understand completely. I tried your settings again, and I'm affraid it didn't make much of a difference. No criticism, mate. I just can't seem to keep mighty strikers with jumping reach <10 scoring at the near post from corners no matter what I do..:)
