It's (IMO) better to make a tactic which works well in home and away games, this is totally possible and this generally means you don't have to make many changes to it throughout the game. Some people like to be attacking from the off and then defensive when ahead but I'd rather be balanced...

How come the opposition always score with their only shot on target, it really irritates me. I don't know whether to blame my defence or just lament how clinical the opposition always seem to be.

If they are a bigger team, the 4-1-4-1 can do a good job of containing and countering. I have a few queries as you seem to have the measure of these sliders. How come nearly all possession tactics seem to be narrow yet a lot of possession sides seem to play with lots of width; Barca, Swansea, Spurs; am I missing something? How easy is it to control games and keep possession...

They tell you some interesting stuff when you first join but how do I find this out at any other time? Maybe I'd like to know how my team rates in terms of passing after five years in charge. How can I find that out?

Is there a way to find the information I get from the "meet your staff" section at any point. It would be nice to find out who has the best passers, most aggressive, etc on demand.

Should be perfect for them, I reckon it suits good technical teams with no blistering pace. Let me know how you adapt it, this is still in it's infancy really, it's not that complex yet.
