Try and get Walter Gonzalez, he's a striker. He'll cost £800k. I was offered £80m by Monaco for him at the end of my second season with Everton.
For Van Dijk's replacement, try and get Upamencano he's basically a younger version of Van Dijk.
In FM17 I was able to do this, and it improved my laptop performance immensely.

Isimat-Mirin from PSV is a solid CB - a poor man's Virgil Van Dijk, basically. He can be picked up for under £3m.
Josue from Vitoria is another good CB, but will cost slightly more at between £6-9m.

I keep seeing people on here saying they managed to get him from anywhere between £10-15m. Yet whenever I bid, they want anything from £25-39m.
There was a guy on here that posted the name of a striker that costs around £600k. The striker was from somewhere like Paraguay (I could be wrong). His stats were insane, he had 4 and a half star rating for Southampton when I signed him in my first season (save is corrupted now).

Good to hear that the general consensus is that it is better than FM16.
I've played since FM12, and absolute despised FM16. The furtherest I got into a save was halfway through the second season.
