Welcome to the start of a new adventure — and this one’s personal. I’m taking the reins at Airdrieonians FC, a club whose very existence is a story of heartbreak, resilience, and controversial rebirth. Nestled in the heart of North Lanarkshire, Airdrieonians are more than just a football club — they’re a symbol of a community’s refusal to fade away.

The Fall: Administration and Collapse​

The original Airdrieonians, founded in 1878, were once a proud name in Scottish football. They reached the Scottish Cup final in 1992 and even had a brief flirtation with European competition. But financial mismanagement and mounting debts led to their tragic demise in 2002. Despite valiant efforts to save the club, including fan-led campaigns and last-minute bids, the doors closed and the Diamonds were no more.

The Controversial Rebirth: Clydebank’s Sacrifice​

But the story didn’t end there. In a move that still sparks debate among Scottish football fans, Airdrie United was formed by purchasing the league place of Clydebank FC. Clydebank, themselves struggling financially and without a permanent home, were effectively replaced — their identity dissolved to make way for Airdrie’s resurrection. It was a lifeline for one club, a death knell for another.

In 2013, the club reclaimed its original name: Airdrieonians FC. The badge was restored, the name revived, and the mission renewed — to climb back to the heights they once knew, and perhaps even beyond.

Legends of the Diamond: Airdrieonians’ Greatest Players​

While the modern club is still carving out its legacy, the original Airdrieonians produced some truly iconic figures who left their mark on Scottish football:



Hughie Gallacher – A true legend of the game, Gallacher began his career at Airdrie before becoming a star at Newcastle United and captaining Scotland. His dazzling skill and prolific scoring made him one of the most feared forwards of the 1920s.


Jimmy Sandison – A commanding presence in defence and a natural leader, Sandison captained the Diamonds during their 1990s resurgence, including that memorable 1992 Scottish Cup final run.


Owen Coyle – A prolific striker and later a respected manager, Coyle’s goalscoring exploits in the 1990s made him a fan favourite. He returned to manage the club in 2007, further cementing his place in Airdrie folklore.


Sandy Stewart – Another stalwart of the 1990s, Stewart was a versatile and tireless performer who later managed the club and remains closely associated with its identity.



These names are etched into the club’s DNA — reminders of what Airdrieonians once were, and what they can be again.

Diamonds in the Rough: Youth Academy Successes​

Despite the turbulence, Airdrieonians have quietly built a reputation for nurturing young talent. Several players have emerged from the club’s youth ranks to make their mark in the Scottish game and beyond:


Scott Stewart – Son of Sandy Stewart, Scott became a fan favourite at the Excelsior before moving on to Arbroath, where he’s become a key figure in the Championship.


Liam Coogans – A teenage sensation who earned a move to Huddersfield Town after impressing in League One, showing the potential of Airdrie’s youth setup to attract attention from south of the border.



Justin Devenny - Devenny may have came through the youth system at Kilmarnock but he made his name at Airdrie where he initially joined on loan before making the move permanent. with his performance he got a move to Crystal Palace where he scored the winning penalty against Liverpool in the Community Shield final.


Jordan Allan – A record-breaker who made his debut at just 14 years old, Allan’s journey has taken him across the SPFL, and he remains a symbol of the club’s commitment to giving youth a chance.



These players are reminders that even in the lower leagues, with the right environment and belief, talent can flourish.

Now, I’m stepping into this legacy. The club has flirted with promotion in recent years, but the Premiership remains elusive. My goal? To honour the past, embrace the present, and build a future worthy of the badge.

FM26 Squad Breakdown: Diamonds Ready to Shine​

As I settle into the manager’s office at the Excelsior Stadium, it’s time to assess the tools at my disposal. Airdrieonians may not boast the deepest squad in the Championship, but there’s a blend of experience, youth, and untapped potential that could make this campaign one to remember.

Goalkeepers​

Matty Connolly (22) – My likely No.1. Agile, composed, and improving with every game. A product of Motherwell’s youth system, he’s got the reflexes and distribution to suit a possession-based style.
Cade Melrose (20) – One for the future. Raw but promising, he’ll get minutes in cup games to aid development.

Defence​

Lewis Strapp (25) – Dynamic left-back with a great engine. Offers width and tenacity — a key outlet in transition.
Sean McGinty (32) – Towering centre-half and vocal leader. Brings physicality and aerial dominance.
Aidan Wilson (27) – Calm and composed, ideal for playing out from the back. Could form a solid partnership with McGinty.
Samuel Cleall-Harding (19) – Towering centre-back on loan from Dundee United, standing at 1.94m. A Scotland U21 international with prior experience at Kelty Hearts, he’s dominant in the air and a future top-flight prospect.
Craig Ross (23) – Though naturally a centre-back, he’s versatile and could provide emergency cover across the back line.
Aaron Taylor-Sinclair (34) – Versatile and experienced. Can slot in across the back line when needed.
Dylan MacDonald (21) – Right-back with pace and grit. Still developing, but has the tools to become a starter.
Cammy Bruce (19) – Youth prospect with good technical ability. Will be eased into senior football.
Scott Constable (17) – Versatile right-back and midfielder, also on loan from Dundee United. A former Scotland U17 international, he’s composed, mobile, and tactically flexible.

Charlie Telfer (30) – Creative spark with Championship pedigree. Can unlock defences with a killer pass.
Jamie Barjonas (27) – Box-to-box dynamo. Covers ground, presses well, and chips in with goals.
Chris Mochrie (22) – Technically gifted and tactically intelligent. A key cog in the attacking midfield role.
Cole McKinnon (24) – Energetic and versatile. Offers depth and tactical flexibility.
Dean McMaster (22) – Defensive-minded and disciplined. Useful in tighter, more physical contests.
Lewis McGrattan (25) – Neat and tidy operator. Can play wide or centrally — a useful squad option.
Rhys Armstrong (23) – An attacking midfielder with pedigree from Rangers and Celtic youth setups. Known for his creativity and desire to get on the ball
Liam McStravick (20) – a nimble winger who can play on either flank and adds pace and flair.
Alex King (20) – Offers balance and a sweet left foot — ideal for wide midfield or inverted roles.
Gavin Gallagher (21) – Last season’s Young Player of the Year, Gallagher is a technically gifted attacking midfielder with a right foot and Rangers academy roots. He’s pushing for a regular starting role
Calvin Beattie (17) – Central midfielder on loan from Dundee United, youngest of the trio. Born in 2008, he’s composed beyond his years and expected to develop rapidly with first-team exposure.

Attack​

Euan Henderson (25) – Quick, direct, and clinical. Likely to lead the line in a 4-3-3 setup.
Jake Hastie (27) – Explosive winger with a point to prove. Can stretch defences and deliver quality crosses.
Aaron Reid (21) – Tall, powerful striker. A raw talent who could thrive with the right coaching.
Tate Xavier-Jones (19) – Young English forward from Luton. One to watch — could be a breakout star.

Tactical Notes​

I’m leaning toward a 4-2-3-1 at the moment while in possession with out AM dropping back into midfield while out of possession, I will look to keep the high wingers so that if the change of a counter attack happens we have players up the park who can help get the ball into our lone striker.​

July Recap: Pre-Season & League Cup Group Stage​

We kicked off the season with a mix of friendlies and competitive fixtures, using July to build fitness, test tactical setups, and integrate new faces. The results were encouraging — especially in the League Cup, where we secured qualification to the next round.

Derby County 2–0 Airdrieonians (Friendly)​

A tough opener at Pride Park. Connolly made key saves, Gallagher showed flashes, and Cleall-Harding looked solid. A useful benchmark.

Wealdstone 2–3 Airdrieonians (Friendly)​

Barrington and Mooney found the net in a thrilling win. Constable impressed down the right, and McStravick’s movement was a constant threat.

Brighton 2–0 Airdrieonians (Friendly)​

A respectable showing against Premier League opposition. Xavier-Jones and Beattie showed promise, and Armstrong tried to drive transitions.

Airdrieonians 1–0 Hamilton (League Cup)​

Barjonas struck late to seal a gritty win. Gallagher was lively, Reid led the line well, and Constable gave us width.

Caley Braves 0–1 Airdrieonians (League Cup)​

Constable scored early and remained a threat throughout. King controlled midfield, and Reid’s physicality helped us grind out the result.

Airdrieonians 5–0 East Kilbride (League Cup)​

Total dominance. Constable, Gallagher and McStravick ran the show, and Cleall-Harding looked mature beyond his years.

Motherwell 2–0 Airdrieonians (League Cup)​

Our unbeaten run ended against a well-drilled Motherwell side. Cleall-Harding battled hard, Armstrong tried to spark attacks, and Hastie looked dangerous on the break.

League Cup Progress: Through in Second Place​

Despite the final-day defeat, our performances were strong enough to secure second place in the group , earning a spot in the knockout stages. With three wins from four and a +9 goal difference, we comfortably edged out the rest of the pack.

The squad showed resilience and attacking flair, with loanees like Beattie and Cleall-Harding adding depth. We now await the draw for the next round — and a chance to test ourselves against tougher opposition.

August Preview: Championship Kick-Off​

With cup qualification secured, attention now turns to the Scottish Championship , where we begin our league campaign with a mix of home comforts and tricky away days. Here’s how August lines up:

Saturday 2nd August – vs Ross County (Home)
A tough opener against a recently relegated side. Expect a physical battle, but we’ll look to impose our style at the Excelsior. Gallagher and Armstrong will be key to unlocking their defence.

Friday 8th August – vs Dunfermline Athletic (Away)
A Friday night clash at East End Park. Dunfermline are strong at home, and this will test our defensive organisation. Cleall-Harding and McGinty will need to be sharp.

Sunday 17th August – vs Hibernian (League Cup, Away)
The big one. A trip to Easter Road to face Hibs in the League Cup second round. They’ll be favourites, but we’ve earned our place here. Connolly will need to be at his best, and Armstrong’s ability to transition quickly could be key. A chance to make a statement — and maybe cause an upset.

Saturday 23rd August – vs Queen’s Park (Home)
Queen’s Park bring flair and youth, but we’ll aim to dominate possession and create chances through Barjonas and King. A good opportunity to pick up points

Saturday 30th August – vs Arbroath (Away)
A trip to Gayfield Park to close out the month. Arbroath’s direct style and coastal conditions make this a gritty fixture. Reid’s hold-up play and Constable’s tenacity could be decisive.​

August 2025 Update: Grit, Goals & a Comeback to Remember​

​

Saturday 2nd August – vs Ross County (Championship)​

A frustrating opener at the Excelsior. We matched Ross County for long spells but couldn’t find the breakthrough. A defensive lapse allowed them to ****** the win, and despite late pressure, we couldn’t convert.​

Friday 8th August – vs Dunfermline Athletic (Championship)​

Down 3–1 and staring at defeat, the squad showed real character. King's brace capped off a stunning comeback. A point earned the hard way — and a turning point in belief.​

Sunday 17th August – vs Hibernian (League Cup Second Round)​

Our cup run ended at Easter Road, but we didn’t go quietly. Henderson’s goal gave us hope, and we had spells of pressure that tested Hibs. Ultimately, their quality told, but we left with heads held high.​

Saturday 23rd August – vs Queen’s Park (Championship)​

Mochrie struck early with a clever finish, and we looked in control for much of the match. Queen’s Park equalised with a well-worked move, and despite late chances, we couldn’t find a winner.​

Saturday 30th August – vs Arbroath (Championship)​

We closed the month in style at Gayfield Park. McIntire opened the scoring inside two minutes, Henderson added a composed finish before he sealed it late on from the spot. A complete performance and our first league win.​

Transfer Update: September Loan Arrivals​

With the squad needing fresh energy and attacking options, we secured three promising loan signings but it did mean we had to cancel the current loans of Tate Xavier-Jones and Calvin Beattie to allow us to bolster the squad.

Seb Ferdinand

A dynamic winger with pace and flair, Ferdinand arrives to add width and directness. He’s comfortable on either flank and offers a new dimension in transition.

Brandon Forbes

A versatile midfielder known for his work rate and ball retention. Forbes can play as a deep-lying playmaker or box-to-box engine, giving us flexibility in midfield rotations

Callum Osmand

A powerful striker, Osmand brings raw talent and goal threat. He’s already impressed at youth level and is expected to challenge for starts alongside Henderson.



These additions bolster our depth and give us tactical options as we head into a crucial stretch of fixtures.​

After a turbulent August, September brought a more structured and resilient Airdrie side. The squad kept two clean sheets and earned five points from four Championship fixtures. While the loss to Partick Thistle stung, the overall performances showed tactical improvement and growing chemistry among the squad.

After a mixed September, October brought a welcome dose of consistency. The Diamonds went four games without defeat, picking up six points and keeping pace with the mid-table pack. New signings continued to settle, and the team showed greater balance across all areas of the pitch.​

A solid start to the month. Brophy struck towards the end of the first half with a sharp finish. We equalised early in the second half but neither team could find a winner, but the performance was encouraging — especially in midfield, where Forbes and Gallagher dictated play.​

November 2025 Update: Explosive Start, Faltering Finish​

After an unbeaten October, Airdrie burst into November with two emphatic victories, scoring seven goals in two games. The attacking quartet of Mochrie, Henderson, McKinnon, and Osmand clicked beautifully. However, defensive lapses and missed chances saw the team lose three straight to close the month. The Scottish Cup win keeps spirits alive heading into December.

However, inconsistency in the league and a Challenge Cup exit tempered the momentum. Off the pitch, the sale of veteran centre-back Sean McGinty to Raith Rovers for £0 and the free signing of Liam Cooper signalled a defensive refresh.
