2014 World Cup thread

Iran were really unlucky. Should have had a penalty and they had a decent few chances to score. Credit to Quieroz. He has put together a well-drilled and organized side

I'd love to know why the pen wasn't given I really would

I honestly give up if you still think Huddlestone is Englands saviour in Midfield. We might as well turn the lights out on or National team if thats the case. Thank god you will never be the manager.
I am not for 1min suggesting that Huddlestone is the saviour of our CM but thinking about it we are very short of options for when the Euro come round!

Most teams that go on to win the World cup never are amazing normally in the group stages. Just do enough to get through with the big names.

Tbh mate it's really a question of alternatives. No one is saying Thudd is a world-beater but he is the best option England have right now in terms of a proper holding midfielder who will be at his peak (hopefully) come Euro's 2016

The penalty was clear as daylight mate ... Always a shame when the underdog gets robbed. Iran were excellent

Have to admit was very impressed. 3 great chances. That dressing room will be like a funeral parlour right now-they knew they should've won and they should have had that penalty aswell.

He has never been good enough in his career to hold that spot. What makes you think when he hits his peak he is going to improve? He isn't. If he is tried at international level I guarantee he will be just a player the game passes by in midfield. He will stick out like a sore thumb as teams pass around him at the highest level which is why Spurs got rid of him. AVB saw what he lacked and yet again thats why Capello never gave him the position.

Honestly Euro's 2016 could go well for us if we do things properly. Get rid of the old guard (Gerrard, Lampard etc.) fully. Create a new core of senior players consisting of the likes of Rooney, Cahill and Hart. Surround the core by putting faith in the youngsters such as Shaw, Barkley, Sterling, Henderson, Sturridge and Wilshere and making them regulars

Rooney would make an excellent choice for captain imo. Sometimes putting added responsibility on your star player brings out the best in them in the international arena. Look at how much Messi has improved after being captaincy. Not to mention Wazza has always been a fiery type who has the personality to lead a group

If not him then who? That's the question mate ... We are facing a real lack of alternatives in the holding midfield area. These are the times you wish Hargreaves was still available

Agree with all that mate, but you missed out IanC best buddy Tom Huddlestone :)

Anyway the Huddlestone debate would be better suited for the England Thread

Can't believe how open this World Cup is.... there has been no outstanding team IMO. It's really exciting unlike previous World Cup in South Africa.

Other great teams stick with the older players if they are still playing at the top of thier game and no-one else is good enough. Why get rid of someone if the next person in line is not fit to be even mentioned in the same breath. Carrick might of had a under par season but he has had far better ones than the single Huddlestone has had. I was at the matches when Spurs were in the Champions league and every Spurs fan around me could not believe how Huddlestone had been picked for some matches. The game passes him by and what I have seen all his career and this season is HE JUST IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO BE CONSIDERED AT INTERNATIONAL LEVEL. If Carrick has a massive season if Van Gaal keeps him then he will be in contention. I would rather Carrick, Henderson, Barkley in the midfield than an inept player like Huddlestone. I am leaving it there now as people keep asking the same question and I give the same answers.

Germany?

Edit: Only played one match but this might be their time

But on the flip side of that teams have made players who don't seem that great atclub level play well at international level. Look holland with vlaar and de guzman or chile with the lad released by forest. They've just beaten the world champs easily one might argue its horses for courses going up a level might bring out the best in huddlestone especially with more quality around like Rooney, lallana etc

So far have have been impressed with Germany,France,Chile and Holland in this WC which is strange because I thought most European teams would struggle in these conditions. Have noticed a few Prem players look really off the pace and leggy.

Lack of a winter break possibly? Although for selfish reasons, I hope the Prem never has one. Few weeks without footie during December would be torture!

CONCACAF teams were all quite impressive too, except for Honduras.
