2014 World Cup thread

Really liking the look of Divock Origi. Lightening quick, quick feet, plenty of tricks, seems to have big potential

Germany V Algeria......Thats going to be a game long awaited by the Algerians to get revenge.

Argentina disappointments but won 3 out of 3... Sheeesh. Harsh critic.

Did you watch them play? They had very soft group and were still quite poor. Took 95 minutes and miracle goal by Messi to beat world supepower that is Iran.

Another disappointing WC for Cappello.

Yeah looks like his style of grinding 1:0 wins isn't suitable for tournaments. Here if you don't play for the wins, you're out.

Still a briliant league manager though. Kind of shame that he wasted last 6 years out of his comfort zone. Fat pay checks will wipe away the tears though.

What planet do these people live on.

Uruguayan Sports Minister Liliam Kechichian said the punishment was a "disproportionate sanction" that "hurts us", while Uruguay Football Association president Wilmar Valdez claimed the ban was "excessive".

He added: "It feels like Uruguay has been thrown out of the World Cup."

Suarez's lawyer, Alejandro Balbi, said the player was "totally distraught", while his grandmother, Lila Piriz Da Rosa, said her grandson had been treated like "a dog".

She added: "Everyone knows what they've done to Luis. They wanted him out of the World Cup. Perfect, they did it."

Did they actually expect he would get away with it?

He certainly behaves like one. And we all know what happens to dogs that bite.

Lukaku has been pretty **** this WC

Shearer and Henry did a little bit of analysis comparing Origi and Lukaku and the difference was clear as day. Lukaku's not moving like an intelligent goalscorer at the moment for whatever reason.

Still think Origi is getting over-hyped a little... I mean he looks lively but what would you expect from a youngster?

I haven't seen anything from him which really made me thought.. wow this kid is something.

I'll actually agree with that. Origi's been made to look better by Lukaku being terrible, but even if you disregard that he's looked merely like a good striker.

That's not taking away from him at all - any 19 year old who looks that competent on this stage is going to be huge - but he's not been crazy good, like Owen was on his debut for instance. We'll see him in the future though: he's got good instincts, all the physical tools and evidently doesn't shy away from the big occasion. He'll be snapped up for boatloads after the World Cup.

Interesting also that Akinfeev had lasers shone upon him just before Algeria equalised.

BBC Sport - World Cup 2014: Russia goalkeeper targeted by laser

Yeah, I saw them. I know I said it was a horrible mistake, but I did think that maybe he was just trying to get away from the lasers. However, it didn't look like it bothered him. He wasn't squinting, and seemed to have a perfect view of the ball, because he could see it's path but just mistimed his jump. That's why I think it was more human error than a forced one. Although, the laser shouldn't have happened.

How am I going to spend my evening with no ****** World Cup games tonight? Had a solid 15 days of football though so cant complain really.

Yeah not sure what's up with him. Has looked very lethargic in his games so far. The heart is still there though judging by his reaction when he was subbed off

Fair play to Chiellini for his comment re Suarez. It's quite surprising both he, and Maradina have come out saying the ban is excessive

I don't get why they don't allow him to enter stadiums or train. That part seems a tad extreme. Hard to feel sympathy for Suarez in any case though

Making an example of him. Excessive, maybe, but he dug his own grave.

Nigeria's turn today to protest over money. Players have refused to train.

BBC Sport understands the players believe they are each $15,000 short of the bonus they were expecting for reaching the last 16 in Brazil.

They refused to train in Campinas on Thursday and officials later confirmed the session had been cancelled.
