2014 World Cup thread

What was the football like? Went and watched the tour de france for all of about 20 seconds then ended up on the lash in harrogate just managed to see the pens but was the other 2games any good
Nope. You are better off watching highlights and you won't be missing anything. Argentina vs Belgium were dull and boring, although the last 15 minutes can be a bit funny to watch, as Belgium turns to route one football, plays Van Buyten as forward and he did this most ridiculous diving attempt. Netherlands vs Costa Rica is only about Netherlands trying to score but desperately unlucky and Costa Rica doing everything in the **** book to get to extra time (fake injuries, taking their sweet time to get the physios to come to them and then after awhile starts running happily again, stop Netherlands counter attacks by lying on the floor until they kicked the ball out of play and then immediately stood up etc). The extra time is a lot more livelier than the normal time but that's about it.

In short, watch highlights and don't bother with the full game.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. This isn't 1965, preparation for pens is a common thing. Shooters get briefed on goalkeepers and goalkeepers get briefed on shooters.

If this was just about stat tracking of Costarican pen takers, the other GK would have save some pens as well. I'd say the swap was about mindgames more then anything else. It ****** with Costaricans heads properly. Versus Greece all of their pens were executed brilliantly. Krul would also constantly provoke them since he doesn't really need to worry about bookings.

I think the 'guessing' was all Krul reading body language personally. That and the words he had with them just before they took the pen.

I know everyone does that but how many times have you seen manager subbing off their #1 GK? Also that was kept secret and the GK had no clue that he will be off.

I would say the prep was just great and even brilliant is Krul dived in the right way every single time which means bringing him on deserves all the plaudits it got. It was ballsy move.

Cech dived the right way for all of Bayern's penalties in the CL finals two years ago ... Afterwards he said that while preparation did play a part, things like luck and instinct favoured pretty heavily. No one doubts prep might have been good which is normal for any manager worth their salt this late into major tournament, I just don't think you can credit it solely for the penalty performance

Being a semi-pro footy player myself, I think it's practically impossible to fully prepare for a penalty shoot-out. Yes you can do the requisite video watching and what not but at the end, I would say it's 20% prep and 80% (skill + luck)

More to the point, LVG is bringing his goalkeeper coach for Netherlands, Frans Hoek, with him to United.

Credit where credit is due, it was a ballsy move by LVG to sub his keeper and it paid off. As for the penalty win, think credit should go to Krul before anyone else. Read their body language and guessed the right way each time. Prepped well with his goalkeeping coach. Had luck on his side

I agree. Being an ex pro myself it is impossible to recreate every detail in training. You can't reacreate the pressure or the tension. All you can do is make sure you are mentally prepared and where you are going to place your shot.

All I keep seeing today is how Germany are confident they will beat Brazil. I hope their arrogance catches up with them and Brazil knock them out.

All signs show that Germany is going to win, therefore Brazil will be the one advancing to the finals.

Commentators called Ozil Muller about three times in the last German attack. Ozil was the one in the box.

What were the Brazilians doing? They just seemed to be having a circle jerk in the middle of the twelve yard box.

Great start so far. Terrible defending from Brazil

1-0 Germany Muller in acres, shocking defending! Khedira has started off like a beast considering how long he been injured.
