2014 World Cup thread

That sentence reply is pretty useless Mike, he's ****** credited Messi with every tiny thing he can, a corner? an own goal? give me a break. A over-hyped dribble? Take them away and he's done nothing in the matches. You can literally make more of a point for other players to get golden ball than him.

This is actually nonense though. Your argument is horrific, its already been shredded I'd rather watch paint dry than respond to this, as it'd be less of a waste of time.

That games vs Bosnia it's ridiculous to say the defender can only put it into the back of his net, you mean he made a mistake and put into his own net.... don't see why Messi deserves any real credit for this, it was a good ball.
Regardless, his goal was excellent, and they'd have drawn without him.

Vs Iran - Can hardly argue it was a great strike but he was poor up to that very last point.

Messi was the only one looking likely to do anything. He wasn't great, but the entire team was truly awful that game. Still won them in.

Vs Swiss - Already mentioned his goal was good and the dribble was nothing special to be honest, he did it and Di Maria still had a hard finish to score the goal.

The dribble came in extra time after running all game. It was pretty ******* good. What was amusing about Di Maria scoring was he'd been ******* **** that game. If I remember correctly he had something like 12 shots with only 3 on target and his pass accuracy was the lowest of any outfield player on EITHER side.

Vs Belguim - No... just no... he was rubbish this game, honestly I swear you would make a case for him if he passed the ball sideways before the goal.

Cool, find me someone who agrees with you. Go read the Guardian's report. Or the BBC's. Or the Independent. Go read literally any outlet by anyone of any repute. They entirely disagree with you. So do the stats, so does the eye test. You are, as far as someone can be in an opinions game, utterly wrong.

Vs Netherlands - Done nothing again.

More than his team did offensively.

Vs Germany - Done very little again.

Again, far more than his team did.

The rest of your post is just bollocks that I'm not willing to entertain. I made the point that Messi carried his team out of the group stages. I'm sorry, but that is pretty undeniable. You seem particularly intent on proving that Messi somehow had a bad tournament or wasn't necessary or didn't play well or is overhyped or somesuch bollocks. I urge you to... well, stop, I guess. Or watch more football.

EDIT: I will entertain one thing; yes, Argentina had a good defence. Shame defences aren't known for scoring the goals that allow them to cover for their mistakes, eh?

Some of Man Utd's season highlights should be on Youtube. Enjoy :D

Not really. Let's face it, this Argentina would have been eliminated very very early if they do not have Messi. The team could only defend as a unit and then send balls forward blindly hoping that Messi could get to the end of it. That was how bad they were. When they were given possession they have no idea what to do with the ball. Aguero was horrendous, Di Maria was hot and cold, Lavezzi the same, it basically feels like everyone is playing for themselves. Only when Messi gets the ball things could happen.

The team was built round Messi, take him out of it and another great player would of been on the pitch, Aguero and Higuain or something like that... would of been tasty. Hard to predict what could happen when he's not in the team.

But honestly, Greece won the Euro's with a solid defence, it doesn't matter. Fact is, they got where they are due to other players as well. Look at Spain.. great midfield/attack... **** performing defence... out group stages.

Lol... you ignore the other parts of my post to support your argument on Messi, how convenient. Honestly we can all look at him but no one else within the team and it suddenly means he carried it. Like I said, it was built upon a solid defence for most games so he hardly carried it.

NO WE WASN'T TALKING ABOUT MESSI CARRYING THEM OUT THE GROUP STAGES, IT WAS ABOUT THE WHOLE TOURNAMENT AND THE GOLDEN BALL.

At the end of the day Messi won it. Whether you agree with it or not it happened. Move on from it.

Mmm, Aguero instead of Messi! A player with no form or fitness who can barely last 60 minutes! Gonzalo Higuain, a striker who specialised in being phenomenally useless all tournament apart from one goal! Those two instead of LIONEL ******* MESSI! TASTY!

How is my argument horrific? The very one you agreed with earlier on that he didn't deserve golden ball and suddenly it's horrific?

I'm going to be interested to see what happens to Brazilian football after the complete and utter destruction they endured.

No what I'm trying to say is, the whole set-up was built round Messi, you don't know what would of happened without him, it's hard to predict.

One just has to look at Holland with Strootman they would of had a totally different approach and formation. That's what I mean.

In case you hadn't noticed, you have to score to win games. Messi did that, and when he didn't he assisted someone else to score. The defence didn't carry the team: it was solid enough for him to not have to score 5 a game to save them. Argentina kept progressing because of Messi, not because of their defence.

If they hadn't got out of the group stages, they wouldn't have got to the knockouts. Messi was the absolute direct number one reason they did. Your argument is witless.

Eh, its true that superbly organized defense led by Mascherano (but Garay, Rojo, Zabaleta also deserve credit) carried them through later parts of the tourmanent. But it was Messi who got them there.

Either way, after poor start Argentina really managed to impress once it came to tight games with solid opponents. I remember we were all ******** about them during group stages. But these last two games? They've allowed one goal vs. two best attacks in the tourmanent. Seriously impressive. Definitely deserved to be in that final. Shame the attacking players didn't show up today.

Yes thank you Tyton, finally some non-messi tinted specs.

But also we must not forget Di Maria, I think he helps so much with the team because he relieves a lot of pressure when he gets the ball and starts vacating with it.

My guess - and it's a solid one given their prior form - is that they'd have kept the same formation because Sabella is tactically inflexible. They'd have chucked in Lavezzi to play Messi's role and relied on Higuain and Aguero to score, and they'd have failed.

No matter what tactics or formation you're playing, sometimes you can't overcome terrible form. The Dutch players were all individually playing quite well, whereas the Argentines weren't. With no Messi, Argentina simply wouldn't have enough goals to progress.

for the love of mother ******* god plz just drop it and move on with your life plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
