Hi, I started my 2nd season and at the end of it I see we are not playing so good, probably my tactics are not so effective anymore but i dont want to make drastic changes. So i need some advice in anything small change i could make. I finish 3rd my last season and 2nd in this one, which im very happy, but i lost an important match in europa league and all went down from there. I based the tactic on high pressing, i tried to make a counter and defensive tactic but i failed miserably so i decided to attack. Keeping possesion and giving the ball to Candreva, he is very dangerous and creates a lot of spaces for the other players so hes free to do anything he wants, when Candreva doesnt play I use Felipe Anderson. I Use the right wingback as a support to help him. Hes the only one who has is own instructions, the other guys are default. Except the goalkeeper, short passes and distribute to defense.

The main thing i see is that team like inter, milan, napoli started to play more defensive against me, and most goals are counter attacks. I dont wanna to put my defensive line back cause it has never worked for my team really.
This is my squad and the matches from this last season:

If you could give me some advice it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

So the plan is to pump it to Candreva, who doesn't have strength or jumping ability, and from there he tries to find your advanced forward with risky passes or crosses? Seems extremely one-dimensional to me.

Yeah honestly I put candreva on that role cause he wasn't receiving the ball so much. If I use that role even with keeping possesion they are going to play long balls to him? I know it seems a bit rustic but it has worked for me so far, I have tried to create more complex tactics involving all players but cant make them work. So I just did the opposite I was doing. I dont want to stop playing attacking football cause defensive tactics never worked for me. I was thinking about playing a more direct game and fast, but I dont know if its gonna be enough. I was thinking to change for a 4231 and change candreva's role as a winger and try to make to have more options with the other players as well. Thanks for the answer

They will mostly play short to him, but your GK will still hoof the odd ball up to him.

The problem is that your tactic is solely reliant on Candreva doing well. If he's getting marked out of the game, you'll struggle. More importantly, he either has to make something out of nothing himself or pick out the only other option he has - your advanced forward. The AF will be competing with 3/4/5 defenders in the box so he'll struggle.

Yes sometimes my AF seems isolated but even that he scored a decent amount of goals in the season (21 I think) would be of some help if I bring the AP in a more attacking role or advanced position to help the attack? I dont want to make my IF in an attacking role cause he loses a lot of balls. I was thinking to bring my AF to help a little bit more as a support role too, or even put another striker but I dont want to change too much the midfield. I was thinking about playing faster cause if I am playing to cross to my AF it would be better to cross earlier so the defence cannot accommodate properly. But as I said some big teams play more defensive now so maybe I can keep the possession until they find some space to put the ball trough. Thanks again :)

You'd need to watch the games to see if playing more direct will work. It could against teams who will commit many players forward. Against the more defensive teams, you've got 2 players (only!) attacking the box. The B2B will eventually get into the box, but it'll be late runs. You need to commit more men forward, but by the same token, don't overdo it. Something as simple as getting another player for Candreva to aim at, might help.

I'd suggest making your B2B more attacking by changing him to a CM/A. Candreva is being told to stay wide and to run wide with the ball, so he could link up with a surging midfielder.

Your LB is also wasted. Keita will sit fairly deep and come inside, opening a gap for a potential overlap. An Attack duty role will help quite a bit in this regard, if you have someone who could do this.

thanks for the answer. I thought that the AP would be more offensive so when candreva is surrounded or something he can make a pass to relieve the pressure. It would be ok if I put a cm attacking and keep the box to box or it would be too offensive? Should I keep the AP with a CM on attack duty? Yes I have someone to do that job on the the left side but I only applied it in home games with vargas on the left instead of radu. Thanks again!

The AP will sit in the hole (so fairly deep) and he's on the other side of the pitch. How is Candreva going to get the ball to him when he's out wide (as instructed) and has to pass direct (as instructed), but the AP is behind him? The AP where he is, LCM, is fine. Changing your B2B to an CM/A is all that's needed, imo.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah but i didnt want to overload the right side, I though it would be very evident, Ill try to make some changes and see what happens. Thanks again :)

You still have the DM and DR covering on the right. If it is an issue, which it shouldn't be, you could always swap the CM/A and AP/S to balance it more. You then just need to see how the CM/A and IF/S interact because they may get in each other's way.

if i put the CM attacking where the AP would still candreva be able to connect with him even if he is on the other side? Cause both will be on attack so i think they will be, lets say, "in the same line". I will try with keita as a IF with these changes. Just another question about the IF, he should be narrower to be near the opposition area or wider to hace time to dribble? thanks

The CM/A and Candreva won't directly link up if he's in the LCM slot, imo, no. Two things. 1 - The AP/S would be able to link them and 2 - the CM/A will be a body in the box, along with the AF/A to aim for.

With Keita, it depends, IMO again. Watch the game. If he's too wide in your opinion, ask him to sit narrower. The only reason he'd be too wide, is if he's blocking the run of an overlapping defender, which you don't currently have. By not sitting narrow, you're opening a bit more space for the AP/S at the moment, so it's a matter of watching your tactic in action when you've made the changes.

Thanks for the answers, its being a lot of help! I will leave keita in standard with no PI and see how he plays, and try to get some offensive guy for the left side apart from radu to have some variation. Ill apply the changes right now, hopefully we will make some progress. Thanks again, much appreciated mate :)

That's the key. Only add TIs and PIs if you see you need them. I see so many tactics with 20 TIs and it's a mess. Any more questions and I'd be happy to answer, if I can.

Well i have tried the changes but i have to return to the box to box in the midfield cause the attacking transition was ok, but the defensive fase was awful. I have seen that my left backs defenders always go pressing and lose the position in the back so the rival looks for overlap even when i told them to defend, i was thinking to make them press less. Another thing is long balls, i had problems with that too, they just send a long ball and my defenders miss the header (?) probably because the defense line is higher, but i suposse if i want to press i should have it high. Should i leave the defensive line in standard and stop pushing higer up?

If you want the fullback to press less, ask him to press less. The duties relate mostly to how they'll behave in possession.

Not 100% sure about the long ball issue, but I find only some of my DCs (the younger ones) are prone to it (lack of anticipation maybe?) and mostly when I'm playing a high line. On Control mentality, you'll already have a fairly high line, so it may be worth removing Push Higher Up and seeing how that goes.

Yes i took off the high line, just leaved it in starndard but keep pressing a little bit. If i play run at defence it means all the players aer going to try and dribble more or just the offensive ones? And when they defend the defend with the formation i have chosen or the roles affect in some way their deefnding? thanks!

Run at defence will only affect your attacking players. They'll be the ones running at the defence. ;)

The formation is the defensive shape. Some of the roles will affect defending, like a BWM will just chase down everything in his area and will get dragged out of position often. But yes, broadly speaking, the formation is the defensive shape while roles and duties largely affects what happens in possession.

Sorry i will upload the save in a while and post it here. Someone is asking for it and my private messages seem not to reach destination :P
