4-4-2 Not so good this year? [Requesting Help]

Can someone help me make a solid 4-4-2 that attacks the wings, maybe with a big strong striker and a poacher? Tried numerous times but i keep failing. Haven't managed to complete a season on FM yet. Conceding corners is also a big problem.
 
I got back to back promotions with Portsmouth playing a 4-4-2

I set it up like this:

4-4-2 Standard Flexible

- I changed my wide midfielders to wingers attack
- I changed my left cm to ball winning midfielder defensive
- I changed my right cm to box to box midfielder support
- I left every other position unchanged

My Team Instructions were as follows:

Retain Possession
Shorter Passing
Exploit the flanks
whip in crosses
higher defensive line
play the offside trap
press more
be more disciplined

I have scored an average of 2.3 goals per game and conceded an average of 0.8 goals most of my goals coming from crosses from the wings.

Thanks a lot, i will try this now. I've started a save with Wigan so we'll see how it goes. Did you set any player instructions?
 
No I didn't change any individual player instructions and I didn't move any players about. Good luck

Just played Norwich the first game of the season with a 442 i created and beat them 4-0! Not bad considering they're the clear favorites to win the league

Went to ****, not surprised to be honest, we scraped wins and only a couple of loses till about november. But we played like absolute **** every game compared to the Norwich game. Makes no sense
