Reading name Adkins as McDermott's replacement

View attachment 321716

Former Southampton manager Nigel Adkins has taken charge at Reading FC this morning after Brian McDermott's recent sacking following the teams' poor league performance.

The Berkshire club currently sit bottom of the Premier League after 27 games - having picked up 21 points. The Royals have 4 wins, 9 draws and 14 losses to their name this year - leaving new manager Adkins with a tough task as he attempts to avoid relegation with the Russian-backed club. Adkins was sacked from his role as manager at Southampton FC last month following successive promotions from League One. The Englishman left the club after Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese became disappointed with the clubs' performance and decided to replace Adkins.

The former Scunthorpe manager had this to say following his appointment: "Obviously the job I'm taking on here at Reading is going to be very hard. The club are bottom of the league and the boys are low on confidence. However, I'm not here to offer the team sympathy. The players have the potential to get the club out of this situation and offer the fans something to cheer about. Hopefully I can get the team playing attractive football again which will pull us out of this relegation battle".

The Reading board haven't been available to comment on the current situation, however we understand that Adkins was the clubs primary and only target and the board believe survival is a realistic aim for the new man in charge.

Nigel Adkins' first game in charge of Reading couldn't have went better as he started off his reign with a win at Stamford Bridge. An early Pavel Pogrebnyak goal gave Reading the lead before former Newcastle United player Demba Ba equalised. Jobi McAnuff regave Reading a lead which they held on too until the final whistle.

Following the win at Stamford Bridge, Reading then travelled to the Emirates Stadium to face first placed Arsenal. A low key affair was decided in the first half when lone striker Pavel Pogrebnyak latched onto a poor back pass by Laurent Koscielny and slotted into the Arsenal net.

Nigel Adkins' first home game in charge of Reading ended well as his team overcame fellow struggler's Aston Villa. Winger Jobi McAnuff gave Reading an early lead which was soon doubled by Pavel Pogrebnyak. Aston Villa then halved Reading's lead as youngster Yacouba Sylla headed home a corner for the away side. Midfielder Jem Karacan was then dismissed for a horrible foul in the 27th minute before defender Daniel Carriço re-established Reading's two goal lead just before half-time.

Nigel Adkins ended his first month in charge of Reading with a strong performance over fellow struggler's Sunderland. Defender Adrian Mariappa headed Reading level in the 13th minute after Sunderland winger Adam Johnson had given his side the lead just 4 minutes earlier. Russian striker Pavel Pogrebnyak then gave Reading the lead in the 22nd minute as he out-muscled 3 players before slotting home. Left back Chris Gunter found space in the box following a long-throw and coolly finished to give Reading a commanding 3-1 lead. Pavel Pogrebnyak rounded off the scoring in injury time as Reading won the game 4-1.

Great run of results to hopefully secure safety ! Sompton sitting bottom - that's what happens by being owned by a douche.

Reading earned a credible point at Anfield as Nigel Adkins' side remain unbeaten under their new manager. A strong performance allowed the away team to threaten on several occasions - although none of the chances created resulted in anything substantial.

Upton Park hosted a physical match as bottom half teams West Ham United and Reading scrapped for three points. In the end, Adam Le Fondre's goal was enough to secure the win for Reading as Nigel Adkins showed his team were equally adapt at playing physical football as well as possession football.

Premier League leaders Manchester United visited the Madejski Stadium as they looked to extend their lead at the top of the table. Before the game, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson told the press he thought Adkins was doing an "admirable" job at Reading. Soon after half-time, stand-in striker Hal Robson-Kanu slotted home as a defensive error allowed winger Jobi McAnuff to stroll past three challenges. In the 65th minute, Jonny Evans pulled back Robson-Kanu and was sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity as he was the last defender. Experienced defender Nicky Shorey stepped up and knocked the resulting free-kick into the top corner. As the game wound down, substitute striker Noel Hunt cleverly beat 4 defenders before slotting through De Gea's legs.

Reading rounded off a fantastic month with another three points as they hosted south-coast club Southampton. Just after the break, striker Adam Le Fondre latched onto a long ball forward and smashed into the top corner. As the game drew to a close, Hal Robson-Kanu beat his marker to head home and give Reading a 2-0 win.

They aren't the real life fixtures and table mate - I just started a save in February 2013 and luckily Reading were bottom so I could take over! :)

Superb run of results again, easily avoided relegation.. Any chance of european football ?

A late mistake from Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici allowed Wigan Athletic to pick up an undeserved point following Hope Apkan's opener. A boring game was rounded off as Aussie Federici passed straight to on-loan Manchester United striker Angelo Henriquez who tapped home.

A strong Queens Park Rangers side held Reading at the Madejski Stadium to a boring 0-0 draw. Both sides were safe before the game and had no chance of European qualification.

Hal Robson-Kanu continued his scoring run since Nigel Adkins took over the side as he gave Reading the lead after the 7 minutes. Just minutes later, winger Jobi McAnuff doubled the lead as he beat 3 defenders before shooting across the goalkeeper. Hugo Rodallega pulled one back in first-half injury time. In the second half, neither team looked determined to make any significant advances and the game ended 2-1.

Consolidate, I guess. Usually I'd look to push on into Europe but with the current edition of FM being so unpredictable, I don't want to be too optimistic mate

Pre-season

Adkins sends out strong message to support

View attachment 323172
Nigel Adkins has this morning urged supporters of Reading Football Club to keep their ambitions for the season realistic. Following Adkins' success at the Berkshire club last season, fans have upped their expectations and were hoping Adkins had done the same - until now. The former Southampton manager took the reigns at the Madejski Stadium after Brian McDermott was sacked; leaving the club bottom of the Premier League.

Adkins, who had previously successful spells at Scunthorpe and Southampton, guided the team to safety and secured a promising 12th position - above giants Liverpool. Fans of The Royals had hoped the club could now push towards Europe, however, manager Adkins has now warned against people expecting too much of himself and his coaching staff following a successful pre-season:

"Of course last season was a great success and I'm hoping to improve even further this year - however, I have to warn the fans against complacency in this division. To take the club from bottom to 12th was a fantastic achievement but the league gets harder every year. The teams around us will improve and we have to keep up with that. To avoid relegation in the club's first season back in the Premier League is an achievement which many struggle to do - and now we've done it we need to build from that experience. I'm not saying we'll be in another relegation dog-fight because I hope we aren't but I don't want the fans to believe we're a solid Premier League team because for me, it's a season of consolidation"

It is believed Adkins received a healthy transfer budget of between £10 million and £15 million to spend during pre-season.

Nigel Adkins' Reading side started the season in promising fashion with a 1-0 win over Newcastle United. Newcastle, who finished 4th last season and thus entered this years UEFA Champions League, arrived at the Madejski Stadium full of hope for the new campaign following their success of last year. However, captain Steven Taylor was sent off for The Magpies on the stroke of half time and 7 minutes before the game ended, defender Davide Santon helplessly knocked the ball into his own to give the Berkshire side all 3 points.

Following the open day victory over Newcastle, manager Nigel Adkins urged his side to pick up another 3 points against expected rivals Norwich City. In a fairly low-key game, chances were few and far between meaning Alex Pearce's 21st minute header was enough to secure the victory for Nigel Adkins' team.

27th of August, 2013: Capital One Cup Second Round

In Nigel Adkins' first venture into cup football while managing Reading, his team managed to progress without much pressure from the opposition as he named a second-string side. 11 changes were made from the 1-0 win at Norwich and despite criticism from parts of the crowd, Adkins successfully leads his side into the Third Round where they will face Everton. Striker Hal Robson-Kanu scored in the 23rd, 40th and 62nd minute to earn himself a hat-trick while defensive midfielder Mikele Leigertwood scored two stunning goals in the 37th and 81st minute.
