A Good Old Fashioned Journeyman Save

It's time to kick off a new save of my favourite kind....The Journeyman!

There's only really one rule to a journeyman save and that's start unemployed, with no coaching badges and no previous playing experience. Bag yourself a job anywhere in the world with any club that will take you and work your way up the ranks from there. It's basically the closest you can get to a real life football management career!

So here I am, Chris Ball, with no football management or playing experience, other than a kick-about over the park as a kid! I go searching for my first job in the lower leagues of Asia, figuring the level of football over there is probably matched closer to my skill-set than the heights of Europe right now, and my chances of securing a job would be considerably higher!

View attachment 19760

The nations I loaded up for the beginning of my save were Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and India. My game begins in December 2017 at the early pre season stage of the Malaysian season, and there are three jobs available, of which the chairman at each receives a hopeful copy of my CV!

I'm going to be updating the below table throughout my journeyman career, so this will be the quick reference point to see how far I've got and where my managerial career takes me.

All three clubs I applied to offered me interviews, but only one came back with a job offer! That was Persiba Balikpapan, a club playing in 2nd tier in Indonesia...a country I've never managed in throughout my history of playing FM! My £450 per week contract comes as a surprise to many...now it's time for me to repay the faith shown in me by this little club!

View attachment 19757

Now I say 'little club' but my considering this is my first venture into management, this club isn't actually THAT small. They are valued at over a quarter of a million pounds, have a professional status and 1,000 season ticket holders. However, the club have no trophies in their cabinet, despite being established for more than 65 years!

View attachment 19756

The stadium ain't too bad either with a 12,500 capacity. We'll wait to see how many fans we draw in for a home game though and I'll be shocked if the stadium is normally anywhere near full!

View attachment 19755

The clubs finances are also pretty decent with over £100k in the bank and an £88,000 transfer budget available to me! We're also spending only half of the wage budget at the moment, so there should be plenty of opportunity for me to improve my squad.

View attachment 19754

Talking of the squad, it's not massive although we do seem to have most areas covered and my assistant manager definitely rates a number of these guys!

View attachment 19753

Left winger, Siswanto, is one of the best players in the side and we'll definitely be looking to utilize his pace and crossing ability down the left side.

View attachment 19752

On the right wing, we have another pacey player in Fengky Turnando, who is again highly rated with my assistant manager.

View attachment 19751

Dwi Cahyono is a striker with plenty of ability and again offers us some good pace. Looking at our 3 best players, we should definitely be dangerous in attack this year!

View attachment 19750

I will only play in two competitions in my first season as a football manager and the board send me their expectations. A mid table finish in the league will be considered appropriate, whilst the only cup competition we will play in is apparently not important.

View attachment 19749

With our competitive fixtures not kicking off for another 3 1/2 months, I've got plenty of time to get to know my players, introduce my own transfers and hopefully work out a winning tactic!

View attachment 19748

With no competitive football to play for a few months, it gives me the ideal opportunity to study for my first coaching badge, which the club agree to fund!

Transfer Window Roundup

Five new players joined the squad during the transfer window, all on free transfers!

View attachment 19718

Rivai Arsyad has come in to bolster the defence and is immediately one of our best options in this position! With no individual attribute standing out on paper, he is just a good all round defender!

View attachment 19717

We needed a backup player for the left wing and Alan Martha is the man I've brought in to do that job! He has good pace and dribbling ability to run at the opposition defence, with the ability to play both as a winger and inside forward.

View attachment 19716

Again, I only had one good striker in the squad, so was keen to add another, which I've done with Afrizal. Good pace, composure, off the ball movement all combined with a decent finish should make him a decent option up front for us!

View attachment 19715

With only one recognised right back in the entire squad, it was a position where I had to add another player. Options were limited in this department, but I managed to snap up Fernanda who will act as a backup in the right back position for us. At the age of 33, he will bring an experience head on his shoulders to the team as well.

View attachment 19714

Another player that came in who is likely to act predominantly as a backup is Dian Irawan. He'll be able to do a job for us when called upon with some all round stats that make him a decent addition to the squad.

View attachment 19713

Pre Season

The pre season campaign saw us play 7 friendlies over a 6 week period and we managed to win 5 of those, albeit against weaker opposition. Due to the sheer lack of teams available to play, we had to play a couple of teams twice just to keep match fitness up.

View attachment 19712

After quite a bit of tinkering, this is the tactic we will be kicking off the new season with. I feel that it plays to our strengths of using our best players out wide in their best positions. Our defence is certainly the weakest part of our team on paper, hence why they'll all play with a defensive mentality as I don't want any of the back 4 straying forward and out of position. I feel like our best chance of stopping the opposition scoring is to play with a solid defensive line who keep things simple whilst allowing the attacking players to stay forward and hopefully catch our opposition on the counter attack.

View attachment 19711

League Preview

The Indonesian second tier is split into two groups of 12 for the league campaign. In the 'first phase' each team plays each other twice with a total of 22 games! The bottom 3 teams from each group are relegated, whilst the top 4 from each group qualify for the second phase and a chance for promotion to the top tier.

View attachment 19710

Now the season preview has us finishing all the way down in 21st place (which I'm assuming is just done across the two groups for the purpose of promotion odds). Either way, its clear to see that we're expected to fight relegation rather than challenge for promotion this year! We have no players in the media dream 11 and it looks like I have a tough task on my hands!

A solid defensive performance was the foundation of our victory here. Kalteng struggled to break us down throughout the game and couldn't get anywhere near our goal. A single strike from Fengky Turnando was enough to get our first win on the board nice and early!

Manager's Diary

It's been a good start to life in Indonesia for me. Despite being tipped for relegation this season, we have kicked off the league campaign with a draw and a win and put a statement out there that we're not going to be pushovers this season for anyone! The team seems to be taking to my tactical style and formation pretty well and hopefully we can continue to push on from here next month!

We were unlucky not to win here after hitting the woodwork a couple of times. We were definitely the better side and it's gutting not to come away with all 3 points. On a positive note, it's another good defensive performance and another clean sheet!

Indonesian League Two First Phase Group A
Matchday 4 - Semeru FC (Home)

View attachment 19587

Semeru definitely started this game the better side and within the first 20 minutes they'd already had 7 shots at our goal compared to our 1 chance. I dropped the team back to a balanced approach rather than attacking and it worked wonders and from that point we were the better side and cruised to a 3-1 win! Siswanto with the pick of the goals, a beautiful free kick curled into the top corner from 25 yards!

Indonesian League Two First Phase Group A
Matchday 5 - Persiraja (Home)

View attachment 19586

Persiraja came into this game having won 3 of their opening 4 games, so I thought this could genuinely have been our first defeat of the season! Instead, my lads turned on the attacking style and had an amazing 27 shots on goal on our way to another win! Our opponents were very clinical with their chances, but the sheer volume of our attacks paid off in the end!

My left winger hadn't played that well in the opening two games last month and was dropped for the Perserang game. It seemed to have given him the wake up call required as he has come back with two outstanding performances since, with 2 goals and an assist to his name!

First choice striker, Dwi Cahyono, picked up an injury in training that will see him miss about a month of action.

Well what a start to the league campaign we have made as we now sit 5 games in and still unbeaten! It's so much more than I could ever have hoped for and although it will be a test of the lads character when we do lose, we need to enjoy these runs as and when they come round! The most encouraging thing so far as well is the fact that we've only actually played 1 side in the bottom 4!

We kicked off June with another win over Persis Solo. Persis had only won 1 of their opening 5 games, so I'd have been disappointed had we not got the win here, with us in much better form! Our third goal was scored by centre back Rivai Arsyad, who has now scored in each of our last 3 games!

Absolutelty brilliant going forward and when you score 4 goals, you're all but guaranteed to win! Well I say we scored 4, Persita actually scored two of them for us, but we'll take it! Khairunnas Afrizal bagged himself the other two!

We've dropped out of the top 4 for the first time this season with only 6 games remaining in the first phase. I guess we have already achieved our target in the fact that we're pretty much guaranteed to avoid relegation and finish mid table, but I will be disappointed if we don't make the top 4 now! Our final 6 games are against all of the bottom 6, so it's there for the taking if we can just turn our form back around and get some wins on the board!

Will be following this as ever, and decent start to the season although a little wobble as of late. Sure you can turn it around. Plenty of high scoring games mind! Odds on a 0-0??

Siswanto was our best player, scoring 10 goals and setting up another 6 in 23 games. Our strikers were bitterly disappointing and is something that will need to improve next year as they only bagged 14 goals between the 3 of them - we need a striker that can score 14 by himself! The assists came from across the whole of midfield and we seem to have enough creativity in the middle of the park, if we can find the strikers to finish off the chances created!

Manager's Diary

So we fell at the final hurdle and I'm absolutely gutted that we couldn't get over the line and finish in the top 4! But overall, I have to admit it's been a decent first season for me as I exceeded all expectations pushing the top 4 right to the wire, when we were expected to be battling relegation...a battle we didn't get drawn into all season! We have something to build on for next season and with the right additions, there's no reason why we can't come back stronger and do even better next year!

December 2018

I might not be going up with Persiba, but I could still be managing in the Indonesian top tier next season depending on the outcome of my interview with Sriwijaya FC. I applied for the job after it came up and the board seemed pretty keen, inviting me to interview almost immediately!

And it didn't take them long to come back with an offer, with a pay rise to £850 per week. They really showed commitment too as I went back and asked for £900 and they quickly agreed to pay it. Either they really want me, or they're really desperate...either way, I'm on the move to bigger and better things!

All that's left in my December update is to say thank you to Persiba...the club that will forever be remembered as the one's who gave me my first shot. No matter what happens in my career, this is where it all began! They paid for my first coaching badge and in return I gave a record that boasts a 50% win ratio.

January 2019; New Club

It's official, I am the new manager of Sriwijaya FC! They paid Persiba £22k in compensation for me as I sign a 1 year deal worth £900 per week.

Unlike my previous club, Sriwijaya have a bit of history about them and boast a few trophy wins including 3 Indonesian Cups as well as winning the Indonesian top tier once in 2012. However, they've been on the decline since, finishing 4th, 5th and 11th!

This season was an improvement though, finishing 7th in the Indonesian League One. Only 2nd placed Arema lost less games than us, but we drew far too many!

The club itself is of a similar size to Persiba, with the same amount of season ticket holders, although they do have better facilities!

View attachment 19307

As for the stadium, it's much bigger and better with a huge 40,000 capacity!

Just after I join, the club announce more good news with some new sponsorship deals which will bring in some significant cash to the club!

And the board announce my budgets for the new season. With Persiba, I was working with a wage budget of £14k, so this is a massive step up with nearly three times that available to me.

I've not got any issues with the squad dynamics and the players seem pretty willing to give me a chance to show what I can do!

Talking of the squad, it's quite a big one, but with a lot of players who won't make the cut for me! We have a shortage of wide players in the team, so I'm likely to favour a narrow diamond style of formation to start off with and we have way too many strikers and goalkeepers so I may look to loan out a couple of the younger ones!

Now last season, my Persiba team struggled up front with no high quality strikers. However, at my new club I don't have that excuse as two of my best players will be my front 2 partnership!

February/March 2019 - Pre Season

Transfer Window

My first piece of transfer business at my new club is the loan signing of 18 year old Argentinian centre back, Leonel Aguerreche, from San Martin. He will immediately slot into my back 4 and have a chance to prove himself at this level!

I've also added one permanent player to the squad with the signing of centre back, Agung Prasetyo, from fellow League One side, Arema, for a fee of £11,000. We were lacking in numbers and quality in the centre back position and Prasetyo is better than most of our current options and is likely to get plenty of games in his first season here! He signs a 1 year deal worth £600 per week.

The best two prospects we've brought to the club this year are goalkeeper, Wahyuddin Prasetyo, and attacking midfielder, Hasan Kurniawan.

Pre Season

Yes we played lower league teams during pre season, but it couldn't have gone better, winning every game!

Season Preview

New loanee Leonel Aguerreche is among the bookies favourites to win the top young player of the year award!

View attachment 19202

We are 90-1 to win the title and predicted a mid table finish by the bookies! Ironic that my only player that makes the media dream 11 won't play for me as he is a wide man that doesn't fit the 4-4-2 narrow diamond formation I have decided to play!

The board are looking for a top half finish in the league and it seems that nobody takes the Indonesian Cup seriously in this country!

Indonesian League One
Matchday 1 - PS Tira (Home)

View attachment 19190

I'm pleased to kick off my first game with a win! We were dominant as well with the team looking good under the new formation/tactical style so early on! We only managed the one goal, but I'm confident we'll score more if we continue playing this way!

Indonesian League One
Matchday 2 - Cilegon United (Away)

My first away game in charge ends in a bore draw and most importantly a 2nd clean sheet!

Rizky Abdiansyah

With two clean sheets under out belt, the award was always going to a defender and there's been none better than our centre back, Rizky, during the first 2 games!

Other News

We've lost our main striker for the next 3 weeks through injury!

Manager's Diary

It's still early days, but I've enjoyed my time here already. I can attract better quality players to the club and have the budget to do it as well! We've made an unbeaten start to the season and are yet to concede a goal. Hopefully we can push on from here!
