It's June 10th, before the start of the 2010/2011 Premier League season and I've just switched on Sky News. Along the bottom of the screen, scrolling across in front of a yellow background are words I can't quite believe and don't really want to, " Harry Redknapp has today called time on his football management career after 27 years".
I switch immediately to Sky Sports News! Apparently Redknapp has been dealing with health complications for the last year of his career and no longer feels it would be responsible of him to continue on as manager of Tottenham Hotspur F.C.
Just as we seemed to be shedding our roller coaster image, we are now without a manager with a long tough season ahead of us. We will surely have to add to the squad, to allow for the new Champions League venture and will we really find a better wheeler dealer than Redknapp to do that?
To answer fans concerns, the board had this to say," We understand having lost a legend of English management, that the fans will have concerns but we can assure them everything will have been thoroughly considered before appointing a replacement for Harry".
After switching the channel to sky sports many times during the day, I head off to bed with no more news on the situation at Spurs.
June 15th arrives and I receive a call from a friend," Turn on Sky Sports News now, you won't believe your eyes!". Sure enough Martin was right. There was a press conference set up at white hart lane. I asked Martin ,"What's going on? Surely they can't have found a manager already?".
"Was just thinking the same thing mate but anything can happen in...". Before Martin can finish his sentence he is immediately silenced by Daniel Levy, Spurs chairman cutting across him.
" I guess you are all wondering why you have been gathered here today on such short notice? Well, let me explain. The reality of the situation is that Harry gave us a lot of notice before leaving the club. Before the last game of last season he let us know of his decision to retire. So essentially we have had a while to come to a conclusion over the managerial position at Tottenham. Ladies and gentlemen the new Spurs manager is here today!".
"Whoaa I can't believe this Martin!" Levy continues," To take over from Harry, we wanted someone who knows what the club is about, who is determined to drive Tottenham on for the sake of the club and it's fans. We also wanted someone who is young enough to lead a new generation of spurs talent to greater things and who is assured of themselves enough to achieve that aim.
This man has played for the club and won the P.F.A Player of the Year whilst playing for us. He is the only player to ever have done so, while playing for a team finishing outside the top 4. Now he is taking over a group of players who have achieved that 4th place position and hopefully will do that again with them, as well as better things. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Mr. David Ginola!"
This statement creates feelings of shock, joy and fear in me, all in that order. Shock, because his name had not been mentioned in anything related to the job and he had never managed before. Joy, because this man is one of the clubs biggest heroes and was a magnificent technical player. And fear, because as stated already, he has never managed a football team before, never mind one at such a high level, embarking on its first experience of Champions League football.
The Reporters are obviously falling over themselves to ask the man of the hour their questions.
Reporter 1: Mr Ginola, the majority of spurs fans will be absolutely shocked with your appointment for many obvious reasons. What is it that has brought you back to White Hart Lane and made you decide that now is the time to begin your non-playing career in football?
Ginola: Well, let me tell you first of all, the fans of this club are extraordinary and are the main reason why I am back at this amazing club. I have played for them and now I will manage the team to do my best for them. The reason I have decided on now for managing is that the offer of managing this club is too good to turn down. So many great players are here, I believe that as squads go, we have the best in the league. I also have the feeling within me to manage now, and it is something I have been wanting to do for a little while actually.
Reporter 2: Mr Levey has shown great confidence in you, to offer you the job without prior management experience. Are you confident you can reward him and hit the ground running?
Ginola: I am confident yes, because I must be to succeed in this job. I believe that anything I want to do, there is no problem, I can do it. I have many great connections in the football world and I am confident I will have a great backroom team behind me at the start of the season, to support me in bringing the club further on in the football world.
Reporter 3: You have already said that you believe there is a great squad here already. Does that mean we should not expect much in the transfer market from Spurs this season?
Ginola: Well, I will know more on this for sure once I have had some time with the players. I don't expect there will be too much movement as what is here has already worked well together. However I will make whatever changes I deem necessary to take this club to the next level and beyond, as I believe there is great potential for Tottenham to be a european giant.
Reporter 4: You say you will make whatever changes you think necessary, how much money have you been given to do that by the chairman?
Ginola: Well I'm not going to go into detail about those finances, other than to say that I am extremely happy with what the chairman has afforded me to improve the team.
Reporter 5: You were renowned around the world as a great flair player, will this characteristic reflect in your team also?
Ginola: I believe this team has the potential to be a great footballing team, that plays the game the way i believe it should. So yes, you should expect to see the ball being kept on the ground and players being aloud to be creative. I believe this approach will be best for us and will see us rise in stature in the football world.
Press Officer: That will be all now ladies and gentlemen.
Well as they say, things are never dull at Tottenham and that certainly doesn't appear to be changing any time soon. After a discussion with Martin about what had just unfolded, I decided that Ginola may have what it takes to be a brilliant manager. After all he was a rare player, in that he combined his flair with great teamwork.
The only thing is, I can't see him finding his feet for at least a couple of seasons. This is after all what the board had in mind after hiring him, the future. Maybe, just maybe, he might deliver the goods from the off and make sure Harry Redknapps good work does not go to waste.

Over the next few days, Spurs were linked with just about every player within their reach, from Defour of Standard Liege to Vucinic of AS.Roma.
July 1st
Today could go down as the most important moment of Ginolas Spurs career.
Today an amazing signal of intent came from the new spurs coach which I have to say caputured my imagination as well as most spurs fans I imagine.
On the back page of every paper in the country this intent was there for all to see.
David Ginola ladies and gentlemen, has in the past 15 days managed to conclude 3 deals to bring in new players!
Seamus Coleman, a very promising young full back has arrived from Everton for the small fee of 850k.
Ginola was quoted as saying of the deal," Coleman is a good dribbler of the ball and very dependable in his defensive duties. I have faith he can become a big player over the next few years.
The other two deals however are sure to have stunned many myself included.
As had been rumored but certainly not expected.................................
Mirko Vucinic from AS.Roma had been signed up for the costly sum of 18.5 million pounds.
"Well, what can I say of Mirko, everyone already knows he has fantastic footballing ability. He also works for the team though which I like very much in an attacking player". that was Ginolas opinion on the deal.
AMAZING! and yet the next deal was just as exciting.
Luis Suarez Ajax's exciting young striker has agreed to join after a bid of 21 million was accepted by the club.
Ginola said of Suarez " Luis is a fantistic signing for us. Many clubs were in for him this summer and I am delighted he chose to come to White Hart Lane instead of the likes of Barcelona, Man United and Chelsea.
Having been plunged into confusion over how we would do this season after Redknapps retirement, I now feel a lot more confident that we can achieve great things again. Today is definitely a great day to be a spurs fan
