What are the methods in studying the opposition? What to look at and how can you turn it to your advantage?

Sorry I am a bit new at this game

I just posted this a little while ago on the FMNow forum. Might be of use:

I watch games, that's all. In the beginning (when creating the tactic) especially, to see if my players having passing options, not getting in each other's way and the positions they take up. Then it's just a matter of keeping an eye on things. It's not even like huge changes are necessary.

As an example - I play out of defence, but I remove the instruction if I'm facing a 3-4-3. Why? Three forwards to pressure my defenders on the ball isn't a good idea. The (slightly more) directness helps bypass them and I have the number advantage elsewhere and before the 3 attackers can drop back to help defend.

With a Flat 4-3-3 Narrow, I change my DLF/S to a TM/S, so that the team is more direct and seek him out (bypassing defence and midfield) to where I can launch an overload on their defence.

I have 2 Striker slots and 4 options. Towering, powerful striker, creative striker, poacher type and a dribbling, dancing feet striker. I usually face a back 4, so I try and maximise my chances by looking for weak spots in the defenders. I'll pair the tall, powerful striker with a short defender or the poacher against a slow defender. You get the point.

There are lots of little things you can do and I do a lot of them, but honestly, my team is good. They'll still win the majority even if I don't do it. I make sure they win almost all.

Just to add, I just faced a 4-4-2 and they were defending fairly deep. I changed my DLF/S to a Trequartista to partner my AF/A. The Trequartista kept one DC busy while the Advanced Forward pulled the other one all over the place. That left my AMC (AP/A) to create chaos with his dribbling as he was more advanced than their midfielders but deeper than their centrebacks who already had someone to mark. Awesome to watch.
