England to Face Old Rivals in Quarter Final Clash

Following England’s 4-0 victory over Mexico in the Second Round, they will now face old rivals France in the Quarter Finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. France reached this round after beating Italy 1-0 due to Thierry Henry’s seventy-fourth minute winner. The other big tie in the quarter finals is Spain v Holland and with both teams boasting very skilful squads, this tie could swing either way. Full quarter final fixtures:

Fantastic Foster Sends England Through!

What A Beauty! : James Milner runs off to celebrate his free-kick.

Ben Foster was today named an Man of the Match in a windy Johannesburg after a fabulous display ensured that England made it through to the semi-final. With Alan Shearer naming a 3-4-3 formation, pundits were questioning his tactics but they came off in a fantastic 3-2 victory over France. The England fans in Soccer City were silenced on seventeen minutes after a dashing run from his own half on the right hand side saw Nicolas Anelka cross for Karim Benzema to blast home from the edge of the penalty area. However, the English fans were cheering again on thirty-six minutes after a long goal kick by Ben Foster flew over the defence for Wayne Rooney to chase onto and slot past the oncoming Hugo Lloris for his 30th England goal. England went into the break the happier of the two teams as in first half injury time James Milner blasted in a free kick from thirty yards out to give England a 2-1 lead. Things got even worse for the French outfit shortly after half time as Frank Lampard was allowed time and space to advance and strike a thunderbolt from twenty yards out to give England a two goal cushion. France had numerous attempts in the latter stages of the game but Foster kept them out before they finally scored in second half injury time after some good play by Benzema on the left hand side saw him put a teasing cross to the back post for Mathieu Flamini to tap in from a few yards out. The final whistle saw ecstatic celebrations by players and fans alike and gave them a excellent win over their arch rivals. The only bad news to come from this match was that Gabby Agbonlahor will miss the rest of the World Cup finals with a broken jaw following a collision with Philippe Mexes.

Mouth Watering Ties In World Cup Semi Finals!

Following the Quarter Final results, the draw has been made for the World Cup Semi Finals. The remaining four teams are supposed to be the best four footballing nations in the world and hopefully they will live up to that reputation in these two games. The first name out of the hat 1966 winners England who found out they will take on five time champions Brazil, who boast superstars like Kaka, Pato, Robinho and Julio Cesar. The other tie in the semi-finals sees European neighbours Portugal and Spain take each other on to secure a place in Johannesburg on July 11th.

England v Brazil
Portugal v Spain

England End Penalty Shootout Hoodoo!

New Hero : Ben Foster during the penalty shootout vs Brazil.

Every man, woman, child or animal in England was focused on this match as England had the chance to make it to the final and make it their best finish at a World Cup Finals since Italia 90. Looking at the England side to start the match, manager Alan Shearer was definitely going for a win in ninety minutes here as he recalled Joe Cole, Tom Huddlestone and Carlton Cole after they missed the quarter final with France. Both teams shared most of the play in the first half but both goalkeepers stayed strong and kept clean sheets. The deadlock was broken in the fiftieth minute as Carlton Cole scored his first international goal and what a time to score it in a World Cup Semi Final, Tom Huddlestone played a pinpoint pass to him, he jinked past Lucio and calmly slotted it away and showed why he is one of the best strikers in England. However, Brazil hit straight back as Robinho nutmegged John Terry and carefully chipped the ball over a stranded Ben Foster. Both teams had even possession throughout the whole of the match and in extra-time both teams rattled the woodwork from shots by Frank Lampard and Kaka. As penalties loomed, Theo Walcott had a chance to settle it for England in the 120th minute but his effort was saved by the superb Julio Cesar. The referee’s whistle brought an end to extra time and England were going to have to get over their penalty shootout hoodoo to get to the final in Johannesburg. Wayne Rooney stepped up to take the first penalty and slotted it in the bottom left hand corner. Kaka was up next for Brazil and his strike down the middle left Ben Foster with no chance. Next up for England was Carlton Cole, who had earlier scored his first international goal, but his effort to Julio Cesar’s right was perfectly saved. Robinho then converted his effort to make it 2-1 to Brazil after two penalties. Successful penalties from Theo Walcott, Adriano, Ashley Young, Maxwell and David Beckham followed to make it 4-4 with Felipe Melo to take Brazil’s last penalty and send them through. Could Carlton Cole go from hero to zero? Or could Ben Foster become a legend? As Melo stepped up, the tension around the ground was unbearable, whistles and boos from the England fans whilst Brazil’s fans were trying to cheer him on. Melo placed a left footed shot in the bottom right corner, England fans hearts were in the mouth as Ben Foster dived for it....and he pulled off a magnificent save low down to his left! Now it was sudden death, one miss and the game could be over. England’s next taker was Tom Huddlestone but he showed no nerves and calmly chipped it down the middle. Lucio converted the next penalty for Brazil. Rio Ferdinand, Juan, John Terry, Maicon, Ashley Cole, Lucas and Glen Johnson were all successful with their penalties in sudden death and then up stepped Hernanes. He had to score to keep Brazil in the World Cup, the long walk from the halfway line seemed to take a lifetime for the fans in the stand. Again, like Felipe Melo’s penalty, the whistles and boos from the England fans were louder than all the vuvuzelas in the stadium. Hernanes looked nervous as he was about to take his penalty, his run-up direct, his body language wrong. As the ball left his foot, the whole world seemed to move in slow motion. Everyone watching the game was holding their breath, England fans couldn’t watch. However, the ball was screwed terribly wide and England fans went wild. England players and staff ran towards Ben Foster, except Alan Shearer who simply went down on his knees and looked towards the sky before joining in with the celebrations. England had reason to celebrate, they had knocked out the five-time world champions and would now be appearing in their first World Cup tournament since 1966. They would also be facing Portugal in the final in Soccer City and Steven Gerrard and Co. will be looking to get revenge on them after knocking them out in the 2006 Quarter Final and Ricardo Carvalho and Cristiano Ronaldo getting Wayne Rooney sent off.

World Cup Final Preview
England v Portugal
World Cup Final
Soccer City, Johannesburg
Sunday July 11th 2010
England take on Portugal tonight with every chance of repeating their last success and winning it for the first time, forty-four years after winning it on home soil. Portugal will achieve their best finish yet in a World Cup whether they win or lose as their previous best was Third Place back in 1966. Most of Africa will be backing England tonight after adopting them as their second country after the African teams were knocked out.

England will be without their pacy striker Gabby Agbonlahor tonight as he has been ruled out with a broken jaw. Earlier in the week, England suffered a major setback as with three days to go to the final, Wayne Rooney picked up a flu virus and many media outlets reported him to miss the final. However, manager Alan Shearer will risk an unfit Rooney tonight as he and Nani battle it out to win the Golden Boot award. Another striker that will be missing tonight’s game is Peter Crouch as he suffered a facial injury during the build up to the final, leaving England with only two fully fit strikers left.

Portugal will be feeling the effects of Cristiano Ronaldo’s temper tonight after he has been ruled out of the game due to suspension after he picked up a silly yellow card after arguing with the referee in the semi-final with Spain. Another player that is suspended is right-back Paulo Ferreira, Miguel will deputise. Miguel Veloso has definitely been ruled out of the final after he suffered a pulled a hamstring.

Rio Ferdinand and Ricardo Carvalho will captain the sides tonight knowing that one of them will be picking up the famous World Cup trophy at the end of the night. Both sides had an equally tough route to the final with England taking on Mexico, France and Brazil to get to Soccer City whilst Portugal took on Russia, Ukraine and Spain to get to Johannesburg.

Alan Shearer has had his fortunes turned round in the past year after seeing his favourite club Newcastle get relegated under his management, he has then gone and made his country proud by leading them to their first World Cup Final since 1966.

The 2010 World Cup Final report will be available shortly.

Fantastic story, was reluctant to read for a while due to the large amount of England stories around at the moment but this is by far the best. Great detail with the info on all the other groups and knockout fixtures. All the best for the final!

Wow, really one the best stories i have read.
