End of Season Post
What an incredible season. At the start of the season the plan was to try and fight against relegation and we end the season by securing a place in Europe for next year. We played incredibly well for most of the season with only a poor April costing us a place in the Champions League. So many players had their best season for us and it will be hard to replace players as we try to improve the squad.
We finally put together a decent cup run as we reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup. With a bit of luck we could have got a result in the semi-final as well but it wasn’t too be. The fact that we could put together a cup run shows that we are improving the depth of the squad although more will need to be done as we now face a season in Europe as well as the league and the domestic cups.
End of Season Awards
The team of the year doesn’t really have any surprises with the only position that was up for any debate being the LB position but Seddon won the battle with Pedersen for that position. Everyone else were the regular starters in those positions.
Lukas Jutkiewicz dominated the vote for player of the season last season and he has done the exact same this season as well. The tactic and style of play is perfectly suited for him to the point that when it comes to replace him, I will need to look for an extremely similar player. Podence won signing of the season which seems right as once he got into the team he became undroppable. Danso was young player of the season. He had a great season for us but I wouldn’t count a 23 year old as a young player personally.
Squad Overview
Goalkeepers – Butland again is the clear number one although the winter signing of Dean Henderson means we have a quality backup option. I cant see the need to change this position at all over the summer.
Defenders – The defence did well overall but there were times when they had poor games. We sold Harding in January and Dalot is only on loan so the RB position is going to need a lot of work. Neither Pedersen or Seddon had great seasons so we need to work on the LB position as well. The defence will probably need the most improvement.
Midfielders – The starting midfield had a great season as Podence, Bellingham, Sunjic and Jones all did exactly what I wanted from them. All we need for midfield is some more depth if we can so that we can compete in every competition.
Forwards – Jutkiewicz and Nketiah did very well while Deeney and Mertens did okay but were not called on too much. Heredia has had a great introduction to the club and should make more appearances next season.
Plans for next season
I have one big deal already lined up which will take a big chunk out of the transfer budget but it is a player I have been looking at for a while. After that deal I want to bring in a few more faces but it will need to be for the right fee.
