ill say its much more satisfying to make your own, and the key is often patience.
When i am developing a new tactic, ill start a save i dont intend to see through, and develop the tactic there. Try a team like mancity where you can pick the right players, and see how it does, then try a save with a team like hull, and see how the same tactic does. If you are giving up on your own created tactic before the jan. transfer window, you are doing it wrong, tactics take a lot of time to gel and figure out.
Go to the SI GAMES Tactics forum and read the top three/four guides there, that will change how you play the game and develop tactics.
For some inspiration you can check out my arsenal 4231 tactic, its won me the league with more than half of the teams in the PL in the first year. Check out post #12 on the second page, and ignore the "medium" tactic, which is the third tactic picture.
